Why is every VN a love story? I hate love.

Because love is among the most irrational of all human emotions. Most people enjoy reading about it because they never bother trying to understand why people love, they would rather just hear love stories.

If love were not such a "mysterious" emotion for the general populace, most people wouldn't care about it.

I don't mind there being love subplots in the stories I read though. Love is a powerful emotion and it's generally just as good as any other plot device.

Out of notable, recent games, Nitro's Django gets pretty close to that ideal in fact, mostly because it cribs most of the plot from The Good, the Bad & The Ugly.

The lack of 'journey' themes is mostly technical because more locations means more work.
