I could try it on my phone which has a different IP, but I don't think there's a decent way to install this chink spyware shit on one without it sending all my data home.

So after a bunch of years I decided to rewatch this one again and man, it's even better than I remembered, definitively a timeless classic that only gets better the more experience and knowledge we have to appreciate it, if for some godforsaken reason you haven't watched it yet go ahead and do it, it's amazing from start to finish and it's complete on youtube (albeit with potato subs, but there isn't much dialogue so it's not an issue, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ciBTxQWT_o))

That said, now I kinda want more, but besides The Body Hammer I'm kinda lost on where to go next...maybe I should watch the rest of Tsukamoto's films?, any advice?

Tsukamoto is a mad person and no other film reflects that like Tetsuo. An industrio-fetishist body and sex horror tokusatsu filled with wild makeup and effects. I have never seen or will ever see a film that’s as funny, upsetting, egregious, and strangely charismatic like this one. Wish he'd go back to make one of those, hopefully the work he's creating now is akin to it.
>maybe I should watch the rest of Tsukamoto's films?, any advice?
Why haven't you watched his works by now? I recommend going by release order. Make sure to watch The Phantom of Regular Size, it's the prototype short to Tetsuo where he used many of the techniques and themes used in Tetsuo.

I like his movies but I don't think he is that similar with Bong Joo-ho. Basically since Nobody Knows his movies follow different sort of family dynamics and what it means to be a family. Not really what Bong delivers. Even something like Third Murder felt more like Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie. I think Mamoru Oshii has the same vibe but that pretty much goes only for his animated movies from 80s-90s. Kiyoshi Kurosawa also has some movies like Bong Joon-ho but the quality varies a lot.

Watched The Red Spectacles. Kind of a movie that ultimately proves the utter meaninglessness of rating systems, because I honestly have no idea how to possibly square it together, baffling and exhilarating in equal measure. With all due respect, it is quite disappointing and very reductive that Ghost in the Shell has shaped and defined the popular conception of Oshii's work, dry and prestigious (as in "art house" for people who don't want to reckon with anything actually avant garde), at least in the West, when the man, time and time again, demonstrates to be as wildly idiosyncratic as the best of them.

>> No.41686076

>>41685666
The Kerberos Saga isn't for everyone, Oshii in an interview admits. When "While Waiting for the Red Spectacles" radio drama was first broadcasted, the show received many complaints siting how "obtuse" it was. It’s sad because film buffs go on and on about Ghost in the Shell but there is practically no love for the Kerberos Saga in general. Understandable but disappointing. I still believe GitS is a masterpiece, an influential and defining media piece, however, the Kerberos Saga, specifically The Red Spectacles, is in a whole different level of genius. It's so genius that it's understandable when people don't get it and as a result dislike it. It's strange, jarring and unusual. As a mixed media series, I was only able to understand some of its delicate details by branching out outside the films and the anime releases but unfortunately I couldn't find all the radio drama scripts, the manga and the novels so there's still much to delve into. I can only hope that someday there'd be a comprehensive collection of the entire Saga but knowing Oshii, he wouldn't give a shit about it. Hell, his latest live-action movie "Blood Friends" was only screened in a smalltime event 3 years ago and there's no plans to release it anywhere. As a longtime fan, this hurts me a lot.

Even so, I'm quite surprised TRS isn't bigger among the cinephile crowd, one would expect the Godardian and Suzukian similarities would give it an easy in. At very least it should be a notorious curio, like House is among people who don't know about Obayashi otherwise, but nope, not even that.

And I've watched Stray Dog today and that movie is like a catnip for the "vibe and aesthetic" crowd (for that matter, I happily count myself among them). I loved it too, it's nowhere near as robust and multifaceted as The Red Spectacles, but it's like a whole movie made of just the scenes of the detectives tracking down Hoba in the first Patlabor movie and it complements the central themes of the first film beautifully. It was such a pleasant surprise to find out what these movies actually are and it's a shame I'd miss them if I wasn't into Japanese cinema and didn't already have an appreciation for Oshii's other work. They deserve and could be so much bigger, regardless of the transmedia connections. Just put them on the Criterion Channel and let people have their minds blown.

Sono Sion is making a "stealth" comeback. The film is funded by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs, he wrote the film's screenplay and was supposed to direct it but he stepped down and his assistant director Yasukawa Tokuhiro (who assisted him with Red Post on Escher Street) was appointed as the director. The credit for the screenplay will be under Sono's pseudonym Yamamoto Takayuki (most likely because of the scandal). The film will be screened at a mini theatre in Shimokitazawa in December 20.

First off all, I don’t think anyone should force themselves to watch a film they clearly don’t like. While I don’t see how you got filtered by Antiporno, many of Sono’s works aren’t meant for everyone so it’s understandable. With that being said, I suppose you got filtered by the slow and confusing development, which absorbed me personally. You can choose wether you wanna see how surreal and batshit it gets or just drop it because, again, Sono’s works aren’t meant for everyone.

It doesn't seem like your typical mystery drama. As far as I can tell its based on a short story collection and they're doing one self contained story per episode with the last episode being original content and continuing on from episode one. If that's the case I can see people being left unsatisfied with the 25 minute run time since it will be more of a teaser than a full blown mystery. It's nicely shot and I like Anna Yamada so I will continue watching if they get uploaded.

Macchan as a filmmaker has a unique, weird kind of humor and this film is fully packed with the silly little things that he finds funny and might not be able to show on his regular variety shows like Gaki no Tsukai. Very surreal and hilarious, I try to rewatch it once every year (did it a few months ago). I highly recommend watching his other works, the full-length films and the conte films, which were as surreal (if not more at times) as Big Man Japan (webm related).

I imagine they found more, but finding one who was in her twenties and attractive enough for TV?

It'd be even funnier if the one who says she loves him is actually just faking it too, but didn't want to go along with the show and actually admit she just wants to be on TV because she was worried they'd drop her.

Honestly, I don't like this project that much. I assume there are some unspoken rules for Kuro-chan so he can't abuse his authority beyond kissing, but all the girls being completely fake is a big contrast to the last two, where it was more innocent white lies with only a couple being willing to try and pretend to be interested in Kuro-chan romantically. This time it's trash people vs a trash person.

The "in-drama" justification is that the mom found out grandma forgive grandpa, so she should move on too.

But overall I agree, the first 2-3 episodes were nice but the 2nd half felt too stuffed. For such a short drama (six 20min episodes) they should have focused on an arc for Mokomi. There was too much drama going on with everyone in the family.

Yeah I did. Sono has always been an eccentric person, dating back to his very early films where you can see how he goes the extra mile for his creations. Like nearly molesting the girl in his documentary film "I Am Sion Sono" (1985), public defecating in "A Man's Flower Road" (1986) and French kissing Ishikawa Yuuya in "BAD FILM" (1995). He's a mad genius. It's too bad that his eccentricity came back to bite him and now his name is linked to some scandals, but then again, the two people who he looked up to, Araki Nobuyoshi and Ishii Teruo, were of the same kind so facing what they faced is quite natural.

TV studios are run by zainichi scum, who are the Japanese equivalent of kikes. They manufactured a "korean boom" in return for heavy kickbacks from the Korean government, and cheap licenses for programs so they could essentially avoid paying for expensive productions and instead just pay for subtitles or dubbing.

As most people are NPCs, if the TV tells them something is popular, they make it popular. The quality of the product means nothing, just how much money can be spent on advertisement.

Hello. I apologize in advance for making any anon lose their time on my behalf, but:
I'd like to watch picrel, Okinawan folklore comedy. Very difficult movie to find. Of course it isn't translated, but I could do with jp subtitles (N2 in a few weeks).
I've checked all websites in the pastebin (some of them defunct, btw), of course, but it was in none of them. According to
>>https://runsystem.co.jp/movies/hotel-hibiscus/, it is available only in U-Next, with a 30-day free trial.
So, is the movie mayhaps available in any other place where I don't have to get an account?
If negative, do I need to either live in the country or own a VPN to access the service?
AND, are there at least jp subtitles to go through thick Okinawan accent? I'll be waiting.
