The prison radical is by far the dumbest one so far. It gets all sorts of fucked up when used in kanji, but the thing you're reading always pretends everything is perfectly normal and you should be able to find it in kanji easily.

Yeah, I'm getting a few of those moments so far even with just reading a bit more fluently and pronouncing stuff with the small tsu and long sounds when there's a vowel after one of the syllable characters. Does require a lot of very careful reading, but I imagine patterns become familiar eventually, same with the kanji and common structures.

I look for them on novel updates or sites like that, then take the JP title, drop it in google JP, and it'll give you the syosetsu link (assuming it was originally a web novel from syosetsu, most are tho).
Then just either read it there, with yomichan, or download it all as an epub with web-to-epub browser extension.
I do that and read it on phone/tablet with jidoujisho.

Once you have about 6k words + 2k kanji under your belt, how much spoken Japanese can you generally understand from an anime or a vtuber playing a game? I'd assume most of it but I may be horribly wrong since I am just starting and only have a few kanji in my brain right now.

if you have memorized all 2000 jouyou kanji you can "feel out" the meaning of most written words. Vocab is very dependant from context but with 6000 words you'd probably understand most of whetever simple things you're hearing (given you have studied grammar, of course). I wouldn't reccomend doing all 6k words in a deck, not even 2k, since the vocab you would want to use may differ a lot, and you'd end up memorizing a ton of useless word. Start your own mining deck asap.

You will often hear that being intelligent isn't a requirement to learn a language. That might be technically true, but in practice, it IS a requirement for second language learners.

Language is acquired patterns. The dumber you are, the more exposure time you need to spot and acquire a pattern. So, dumber people have to get more input hours. They also need more output practice to activate the input they know. If you're dumb enough, you would need 16 hours of AJATT for years to even make it to n2.

Every dumb person who has made it lived in Japan and talked with Japanese people all the time, and the huge amount of exposure they got compensated for their poor pattern recognition. If you don't live in Japan, at some point of dumbness the required exposure becomes so much that it becomes impossible to acquire Japanese.

And as far as retarded natives having made it goes, they had natural AJATT and were forced to talk in Japanese all the time from birth (and they barely made it). Retarded second language learners can't get a similar amount of language exposure outside Japan.

I see this comment constantly whenever a foreigner actually knows how to speak Japanese. They're always shocked when people pronounce loanwords correctly. Every single time, this comment is always there, and it usually has lots of replies like "OMG I know right!" "That's amazing!"

But that's like, one of the least difficult parts of Japanese. I don't get it. I'm used to English having fuckloads of loanwords and pronouncing them Englishly. I don't know any other languages but I'm pretty certain they're pretty much all packed full of borrowings adapted to fit the native pronunciation.

Spanish is a million times easier to learn than Japanese. You already know the writing system and it will take you a day to learn the pronunciations, there are way less exceptions compared to English.

In the time you can be quite conversational in Spanish you would hardly be able to even say or read anything other than simple things in Japanese.

So, after working my way through Genki 1+2, Shin Kazen Master N4, Tae Kim's guide and 5 chapters of Tobira, I was pretty burned out from doing textbooks. My way of practising reading comprehension up until now was reading whatever is included in the reading sections of the books and NHK Easy.

So I got myself some raw manga. I got SoL manga and harem manga as I heard those are easier to read. Naturally, I kept my expectations low as I knew I won't be able to understand all of it. I thought my biggest hurdle would have been constantly looking vocab and I was correct to some extent in that regard.

Yes, I do have to look up words every sentence but I don't mind that. However, my comprehension utterly sucks. Which is weird because 80% of the grammar I come across isn't foreign to me and I'm able to recognize the patterns and yet I can only understand about 50% of what I read.

So far I only finished one volume and I'm getting into the second one. The first one I understood about 70% of it but that's because I watched the anime so I had some idea of what was going on. I'm into my second one and not even done with the first chapter and I'm completely lost. And it's just your typical harem stuff.

At this point, I don't know what to do. Do I just give up and hit the books and then try again? Or do I continue to bang my head against the wall?
