if you have memorized all 2000 jouyou kanji you can "feel out" the meaning of most written words. Vocab is very dependant from context but with 6000 words you'd probably understand most of whetever simple things you're hearing (given you have studied grammar, of course). I wouldn't reccomend doing all 6k words in a deck, not even 2k, since the vocab you would want to use may differ a lot, and you'd end up memorizing a ton of useless word. Do you guys know of a translator (sort of like pocket talk) where it instantly translates but also has romanji?

I know google translate works for this but it’s so annoying to have to go in the app - I’d really like something easy that I can just speak phrases to anytime by pressing a button. I’m learning Japanese but since I don’t know all the kanji yet and I’m a visual learner, having a translator with romanji capability would be a huge help. Thanks!

I despise japanese names.
Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to put furigana on names only the first time ever they are introduced???
I literally forget the reading of the name by the next page, and from then on I either have to go back and forth to the page where the character was introduced, make up the name in my mind with whatever reading I can remember for those kanji, or just blank out the name in my mental-reading and think of the characters as "flower+tree" or "ninja+foot" because I know the individual kanji, but not the specific name readings.
FUCK japanese names.

You will often hear that being intelligent isn't a requirement to learn a language. That might be technically true, but in practice, it IS a requirement for second language learners.

Language is acquired patterns. The dumber you are, the more exposure time you need to spot and acquire a pattern. So, dumber people have to get more input hours. They also need more output practice to activate the input they know. If you're dumb enough, you would need 16 hours of AJATT for years to even make it to n2.

Every dumb person who has made it lived in Japan and talked with Japanese people all the time, and the huge amount of exposure they got compensated for their poor pattern recognition. If you don't live in Japan, at some point of dumbness the required exposure becomes so much that it becomes impossible to acquire Japanese.

And as far as retarded natives having made it goes, they had natural AJATT and were forced to talk in Japanese all the time from birth (and they barely made it). Retarded second language learners can't get a similar amount of language exposure outside Japan.

You'd understand fuck all. It depends on the content but you'd need a vocab of about 20-25k to have adequate comprehension across a range of content.
You also need several thousand hours of listening practice under your belt as well - which is a skill that must be trained seperately.

"knowing 2000 kanji" doesn't mean anything.

I see this comment constantly whenever a foreigner actually knows how to speak Japanese. They're always shocked when people pronounce loanwords correctly. Every single time, this comment is always there, and it usually has lots of replies like "OMG I know right!" "That's amazing!"

But that's like, one of the least difficult parts of Japanese. I don't get it. I'm used to English having fuckloads of loanwords and pronouncing them Englishly. I don't know any other languages but I'm pretty certain they're pretty much all packed full of borrowings adapted to fit the native pronunciation.

So, after working my way through Genki 1+2, Shin Kazen Master N4, Tae Kim's guide and 5 chapters of Tobira, I was pretty burned out from doing textbooks. My way of practising reading comprehension up until now was reading whatever is included in the reading sections of the books and NHK Easy.

So I got myself some raw manga. I got SoL manga and harem manga as I heard those are easier to read. Naturally, I kept my expectations low as I knew I won't be able to understand all of it. I thought my biggest hurdle would have been constantly looking vocab and I was correct to some extent in that regard.

Yes, I do have to look up words every sentence but I don't mind that. However, my comprehension utterly sucks. Which is weird because 80% of the grammar I come across isn't foreign to me and I'm able to recognize the patterns and yet I can only understand about 50% of what I read.

So far I only finished one volume and I'm getting into the second one. The first one I understood about 70% of it but that's because I watched the anime so I had some idea of what was going on. I'm into my second one and not even done with the first chapter and I'm completely lost. And it's just your typical harem stuff.

At this point, I don't know what to do. Do I just give up and hit the books and then try again? Or do I continue to bang my head against the wall?

this word always makes me giggle

>> No.41666020

there are different levels of noob here
the pre pre pre pre beginner who can't read it
the pre pre pre beginner who sounds out the kanji 音読み individually
the pre pre beginner who visually parses it as 異形+成 but still reads it as いけいせい because he doesn't immerse enough to remember hearing 異形, which is usually いぎょう
the pre beginner who thinks 異形 is always いぎょう but parses it as 異+形成 and correctly reads it
the beginner who knows 異形 is also used to write the word いけい, parses it as 異+形成 anyways and reads it correctly

>> No.41666033

>>41666020
what about the people who know 異形 can be both いぎょう and いけい but parse it as 異形+成

>> No.41666044

>>41666033
the advanced beginner knows that ぎょう sounds literary and けい sounds scientific so they go with けい

i live in japan, most of the guys i know with japanese girlfriends barely speak the language.
