One of the most interesting things that we see as we run across the country, teaching this fantastic method, is people continually say "I can't draw straight lines, I don't have the talent, Bob, to do what you're doing". That's baloney. Talent is a pursued interest. In other words, anything that you're willing to practice, you can do. And this is no exception. But it's like driving a car, at first it's a little difficult, you have to learn how to make your hands and foots work together. Same thing. And that's what we're trying to teach you here, is the technique. And once you have the technique down, all you need is the dream in your heart and the desire to put it on canvas.

Here's the deal: We are not born with any ability to draw. It's not a natural or instinctual thing, like eating and having sex, so no one knows how to draw from the moment they come out of their mother's womb. How can some people then have a talent for drawing, when it's definitely a learned skill? They learn the skill faster. That's all talent is in most context, having a brain that absorbs certain things faster than the average brain. So yes, anyone (without some brain damage or other handicap) can learn how to draw, assuming they have the time to make up for any lack of learning speed.

>> No.4162183

Also, continuing this. I actually know a lot of people who consider themselves artists and I've heard a few of them say this "natural talent" or "a gift they given." It's always the fairly average ones, the type who do deviantart commissions. The really good artists don't have some bizarrely self-depreciating hubris around why they can draw, and are always the ones who draw outside of work, enjoy it, study anatomy, go to classes, life-drawing events, etc. It seems like the former are kind of worried that their fairly low power levels of artistic ability are easy to match so discourage everyone else by suggesting it’s some kind of inherent, latent ability you can’t tap into, or at least not as well, because you're not special.

I think it's also that if you get complimented too much and start believing you have a talent for it (which might very well be true), you stop wanting to work hard. Sometimes people get a really long way with hard work simply because they're made painfully aware that they really suck, and thus feel the need to do something about it

Overall, it's important to not get delusional, to simply forget about pride and humility, and instead be realistic about your abilities and how to improve them. Realize what you need to improve instead of just saying you suck, and praise yourself instead of pretending it wasn't so hard if you do well, so you in both situation want to work harder. Regardless of the reason, when you lose your will to improve, you lose. And that's all there is to it.

It's really rare for a person to have insane ball-busting natural talent. It's one of the prizes from winning the genetic lottery. Most people get to their high level of skill through their own hard work. But the reason you're not getting better at whatever you're studying is because:

a) You're practicing wrong.
b) You're not practicing enough.

I mean hell, most of you are in school. You should know what proper study techniques are. Read your books, do the problems in the books, study more than once per week, etc.

>some people can just draw a straight line better

I don't think you understand how drawing works. At all. Very rarely is the the finer skill of an artist that makes them stand out, but rather the style and creativity, i.e. the type of ideas they produce and how they choose to express those ideas that make them stand above the rest.

Anyone can draw, and many people can draw well. Of them, how many can use those skills in a meaningful manner?

No, no it's not. In every artistic field, creativity plays an overwhelmingly large role. To ignore it would be foolish, and indeed the greatest artists of our time are great not only because of their adeptness in drawing, but also their ability to think freely and explore ideas that have yet to be explored. However, we're getting a bit besides the point here, if you just want to be able to draw, and nothing else, then it is a feat easily accomplished by years of hard work and dedication. If you want to be more than a good artist, then you will have to learn to use your mind, and not just your hands.

Of course, you have to be smart about how you practice. Do the things you find difficult to do, and practice them religiously. Be highly critical of your own work and always let other people critique it for you. Never be satisfied with your drawing aiblity, least you get to comfortable.

I have never, in my life, heard of or seen an artist who didn't need ungodly amounts of practice to achieve their drawing skills. Please don't waste your time trying to prove otherwise.

How much you have to practice and how fast that happens, different from person to person.
Same for pretty much all arts. Some people would need a lifetime to achieve what people do in a couple years. Feel free to believe otherwise.

Really, the thing I took from the Right Side of the Brain book is that kids give up their doodling and drawing because they can't get things to look realistic and just give up and develop this mystical idea that drawing is some innate talent that some people can do and other people (themselves) cannot. All you really have to have to draw well is determination and a willingness to push through that stage where your drawings just suck ass and not give up.

Just practice until your fingers bleed.

Talent plays at most a minor role. I'd say the other way around is more likely - if you're severely brain damaged or lost your dominant hand in an accident you have a lot to compensate for.

For healthy people just getting the right influences and practice are the most important factors.

This must be the worst draw thread on /jp/ I've ever seen.

As for my opinion, it's way better to be a person with no talent who works hard, than someone with a bit of talent but incurably lazy. I'm the latter, of course, so it took me 8 years to reach a point in drawing other people can do in 2-3 years.

Without talent you'll never be a genius, but you can be very good with just hard work, and probably better than someone who's just floundering along with talent like previous poster said. I'm slightly talented myself, and I can say that always made my lazy as fuck about practising drawing. As I see it, artistic talent plays the same role in drawing as intellectual giftedness plays in becoming "smart"

It determines how fast you will pick up concepts and can make things a lot easier, but it doesn't really determine how far you can go.

Sort of the same way you can be intellectually "gifted" but if you never read a book and never attend school, you'll still be a retard.

Creativity and inspiration are also important, but are mostly external.
