Japanese make distinctions between some similar consonants (k and g, p and b, ch and j, etc) but not between some others (r and l, b and v).

In those cases it might be anything, like Rance would probably have been Lance if not for "L" defaulting as "R" in romanizations.

That's a pretty bad idea, a Japanese person is the worst possible source for information on proper romanizations.

It's true that they're horrible at romanization. It's one of the reasons they always mess up R and L: they blindly follow the standard romanization rules.
