>When will the government literally say that masks aren't needed.
Actually they literally said this about a week ago.
Or at least, they said masks aren’t required outdoors. Mostly because they just opened for foreign tourists and they know foreigners wouldn’t have worn them outside anyway.
However I doubt it will make a difference, even though the government “officially” said it.
Japanese don’t necessarily blindly follow the national government. Rather they blindly follow other Japanese.

I hate to break it to you, anon, but the vast majority of Japan has weather comparable to (parts) of the American south unless you’re talking way northern Japan.
And far less air conditioning.
Osaka and Tokyo basically feel like Tennessee; hot/humid as fuck in the summer, and winters that fall somewhere between cold and fuck-you-cold depending on year.

Lived there for a number of years. Made peace with the heat/humidity but can’t say I ever liked say I ever enjoyed it. (Loved the south, just not the weather).
It did train me to live in Osaka though.
The seasons feel about the same as they did in TN but slower transitions. You don’t have the t-shirt weather one day with frost on the ground the next day.

Osaka anon here, but I’ll answer anyway.
As for me, I liked the people and the food. I was born in a coastal shithole and when I moved to the south with work, I really liked how the people were somehow both more laid back and more hard working. “Work hard, play hard”, I guess. Plus genuinely nicer.
And the whole “white trash” stereotype is a meme; you can find tons of trailer parks full of poor alcoholic/druggie retards in any state. The only difference is accent.
In fact it’s why Osaka appeals to me so much. The people are uniquely laid back and friendly/outgoing compared to the rest of Japan, and the food is more “fried” compared to the rest of Japan.

most Americans tend to pretty much stay drunk when they visit, including myself the first time I came here.
It’s a combination of the insane variety of delicious alcoholic drinks you can get at any convenience store (and many vending machines) and the fact that you can basically drink almost anywhere in public, which is a surreal novelty to most Americans.
>holy shit, I’m standing outside a convenience store and drinking a whiskey highball

Mind if I ask why?

Also, you gotta remember that religion/tradition don't have much separation in Japan.
She isn’t a practicing Shintoist. But she wanted a traditional Japanese wedding. Getting married at a shrine is no more overtly “Shinto” than giving a Christmas gift is “Christian”.

Same thing with most Japanese who visit shrines; they’ll visit shrines for cultural/traditional reasons, not as a matter of genuine religious faith. They’ll get the good luck charms and whatnot, but wouldn’t be able to tell you which Kami supposedly blessed the charm if asked.

I enjoyed the experience though, and the history nerd in me digs that I got married at a shrine that was established ~600ad

I don’t think I’d reduce respecting one’s ancient culture to “following trend”.
It’s difficult for us westerners to wrap our head around religion being inseparable from cultural tradition, but ya gotta try.
In any case, if you want to convert a Japanese woman, it’s not terribly difficult. Because they’re predominantly “no religion” (not atheist in the western sense, just no strong beliefs), otherwise they’re Shinto, Buddhist, or a combo of those.
And neither Shinto nor Buddhism have an edict of “this belief is the only belief and you’ll go to hell for believing anything else”.

True. That’s part of why I was happy to see my wife want to respect her cultural tradition.

Anyway, CoCo Ichi is delicious. MosBurger is okay. Frankly, Japanese Wendy’s is better than MosBurger.
One is a curry joint and one is a burger joint so you can’t really compare directly.
Pic is a MosBurger menu though.
What makes MosBurger interesting as opposed to western chains in Japan is that the western chains insist on using 100% beef, as they do in the west. Whereas MosBurger makes their burgers with 50/50 beef/pork, which is much more common to find in Japanese grocery stores as opposed to pure ground beef.

Dude Japan loves burgers.
They have MosBurger, Lotteria (a Korean chain), McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, and tons of local burger joints.
>I'm obsessed with an actual A5 wagyu beef patty
It isn’t overly difficult to find. An A5 cow is still a cow, so not all of it is going to be steak cuts. There will always be bits and trimmings best for grinding.
But you won’t often see it labeled/sold as “A5 ground beef”, because grinding sort of defeats the purpose of the marbling anyway. You’ll much more commonly just see it called “wagyu” or “Kobe” (if it applies) to burgers.
Pic related, “Onigiri Burger” in Osaka, which sadly did not survive coof.

Well it seems the current trend for complex cabinets is for making insane “simulator” experiences right now with linked/online play with other cabs and locations. Arcade games in general are trending to linked play; pic related - you’ll often see a ton of linked cabinets of something popular all in one place.

But I’m just happy to see awesome arcades packed with new games.

I highly doubt the manufacturer would say “no, we won’t let you buy our insanely expensive product”.

But half the fun of playing arcade games is playing them at an arcade. Plus he’d probably have to go to an arcade anyway if he wanted to play in any official ranked tournaments.

All sorts. Here’s a pic from that same Taito arcade; it’s a Densha De Go cab that’s basically a small room with full train control setup.
Driving games are also popular; Initial D arcade cabs get regular updates with new content and contests regularly. The updates are called “seasons”.

>What do you think is the best restaurant in Tokyo for wagyu? What about the best in Japan?
Couldn’t tell ya, sorry. I don’t have wagyu often, plus I live in Osaka and have only been to Tokyo a handful of times. It’s like ¥15k each way for me, and about 4hrs, so it makes for a short/expensive day-trip unless I also want to get a hotel.
But the people I know who eat it a lot (usually on a corporate expense acct) are a lot more particular about the origin of the beef itself than they are about the restaurant. Kobe is basically the “gold standard”. I had Yonezawa once as sukiyaki and it was incredible, but I’m not sure it was “more incredible” than Kobe enough for the increased price. But I’m sure a rich person would disagree.
I’d love to try the olive wagyu sometime, but it’s just so damn expensive.

That’s just one arcade chain, and they rotate games pretty regularly. Tons of smaller ones, plus vintage arcades and whatnot.
Plus you have to remember that Japan was in maximum coof-mode for like 3yrs and is just now coming out of it. Arcade game development would not have been a priority for software companies.

Sure, like train driving sims and some insane horse-racing games. And by insane, I mean fucking insane.
Here’s a still from a video I took at an arcade in akiba. The “cabinet” is a huge physical track with animatronic horses that race around it in real time matching what’s happening on the screens.

But of course, anime sells. An Initial D arcade game is going to do better than some generic racing game.
What’s also super popular now are “trading card” arcade games, where you collect cards that are rfid or barcode or whatever and use them with the game. Though by “popular” I should specify “popular with women”. Like you’ll see middle-aged women sitting at these games with literal binders full of cards, and you’ll always find card shops near arcades.

Plus I’d imagine an arcade can buy several of the “new” cabs for what a pod would cost, and with the current emphasis on broad multiplayer, it would make sense from a business standpoint.

But hey, here’s 4 pods for $13kUSD (plus shipping from Japan, plus online software subscription) if you have an extra 13 grand laying around.

So clearly it is done by an elite team of shinobi, and they can probably change all the prices in seconds.

Though I’m fairly sure the ones with “digital” prices like pic and >>41613168 (which most are going to) can be adjusted remotely, as they have cellular data connections. Most likely the machine thought that it had an error, and was trying to summon staff to check it out.
*Especially* if you didn’t get any balls and put them in the machine, and you didn’t mention balls, only mashing buttons.
The machine would think either you added balls and it isn’t detecting them, so an error, or you just need balls, so it’s calling someone.

Well Halloween is definitely a bit bigger.
Here’s a typical day in Dotonbori pre-coof. A decent bit busier at night.
But you have to keep in mind, this area is basically Osaka nightlife central. Everything is alcohol and delicious food, karaoke, comedy clubs, more alcohol, more food, etc.
>What do you even do in a crowd like that?
Have fun with the friends you went there with or met up with there, eat, and drink.
>events like that it's just people shuffling around aimlessly.
Well yeah, it’s Halloween. So the “event” is seeing people in costumes, which means everyone will be milling about outside and drinking.

I also took >>41479793 the same day, and looks like I took it from roughly the same spot as >>41635436

So Halloween was probably a big deal for the locals. Dotonbori is a big part of the “soul” of Osaka, and it was fucked over big time by coof. Historical restaurants went out of business, important things disappeared. So the Halloween event would have been the first time Dotonbori felt “normal” in like 3 years.

Nope, they’re still good to go.
But Zuboraya (pic), a literal Osaka landmark, had to close.
Even more sad, it was their 100th year in business.
The owner was bro as fuck. When he realized his restaurant couldn’t weather the closure, he cancelled fucking everything; utilities and whatnot. He put every bit of the remaining operating budget into payroll, and gave all of his staff full pay for 5 months after the closure.
Instead of just cutting his losses, he financially kamikaze’d that shit into the ground to take care of the employees who had been so loyal to him while they tried to find new jobs.

Yes, it’s hard to get and maintain. Which is why a fugu restaurant couldn’t just stay closed for all of coof and keep staff. Licensed fugu chefs aren’t cheap.

Fugu. They were a fugu restaurant.
They bought all of their fish live and didn’t kill a fish until immediately before it was prepared. So everything was insanely fresh and perfectly made.

Sure, there’s a good number of fugu places. This one just happened to be a local landmark.
>What's that thing in the black box on bottom? Why does it look like premium wagyu shabu-shabu?
because it basically is that, plus other stuff.
Like most specialty restaurants, they knew their specialty wasn’t for everyone.
And fugu is sort of a “special occasion” tning. So mostly they have families/groups coming together.
And of course there’s always going to be that one person who doesn’t like what the restaurant is all about.
So that section is basically the same as how nice steakhouses will still have chicken dishes.

>genuine religious faith

The adherence to some religious beliefs in Japan looks different than in Christian countries. The question of "genuine religious faith" brought to the islands by Christians is inadequate to the Japanese religious consciousness. This issue is not solved in the same way as in the West.
At the level of self-awareness, a person considers himself an unbeliever (in the Western / Christian sense). At the level of behavior and for an external observer, he certainly shows adherence to Shinto-Buddhist ritual traditions.

It was my post you quoted, and it seems like we’re both saying the same thing.
>genuine religious faith
I was trying to delineate between a “practicing believer” and “follower of tradition” in a way that would make sense to someone who doesn’t understand the concept of religion and cultural tradition being inseparable.
Hence the Christmas gift analogy.
There are people who visit a shrine for new year (practically everyone). And then there are people who attend every ritual their local shrine performs, and keep a Kamidana in their house with daily offerings.
Same as how there are people who will occasionally buy some incense at a temple and burn it for good luck, and then there are those who will pray at home every day with beads while chanting sutras.

So I think we actually agree; Sorry if I was unclear, I was simply trying to explain that a “Shinto” wedding isn’t “Shinto” in the overtly religious sense, it’s simply a “Japanese wedding”.

>religion and cultural tradition being inseparable
Yeah, I agree.
>“Shinto” in the overtly religious sense
But it is worth adding that with the concept of "Shinto" not everything is so smooth. The word "Shinto" gained its widest circulation only after the Meiji Restoration - when the formation and cultivation of Shinto was (partly) a measure of upholding local ideological forms during the initial Westernization of Japan - as opposed to the influence of Christianity.
After this word was compromised by the nationalist ideologists of the 30s and 40s, it began to be gradually forced out of everyday use in post-war Japan.

I'd want a house in Tokyo too,but not really a house, something like this:

Well sure, that’s all very true, but you also need to “speak to your audience”, and my post was in response to someone saying “I could never marry a Shintoist”.

If you asked my wife if she’s Shintoist, she’d say “No, my family is Buddhist”.
She does “Shinto things” as a matter of tradition, such as our wedding and visiting shrines on new years.
But she does “Buddhist things” with a much deeper level of actual ‘faith’, for lack of a better term. When we visit/clean her family grave (where her father is), and light candles/incense, and she prays holding her beads, it isn’t going through a motion as a matter of tradition. She is speaking to her father from the bottom of her heart.
