japanese, no language in general is a song, written characters are but an ancient prison keeping it captive... the more familiar you are with the lyrics the easier and faster it is to recognize it at all times
watch anime with subtitles, without pausing, try to train to read stuff before it dissapears
videos with lyrics work too (歌詞) after song name

Im very slow in Japanese
its a problem
because I take longer to get most nuanced/complex jokes and far longer to give a good reply

Also instead of just thinking something and then giving a reply I think something and then find what best matches it using the vocabulary I know

Its frustrating to be bad at something. Compared to my peers I notice I am below average, or average at best, in Japanese.
Ive never really been below average at anything school/academics related. I was 5 grades ahead of my classmates in English reading and writing and every other subject I ever had to study required minimal effort.
Is it fun to be challenged? Kind of, but the extremely slow improvement in my Japanese skills isnt fun.
Any tips or ideas?
I tried to gain an edge by reading a lot of news articles. But outside of picking up some new vocabulary it doesnt seem to help me at all. Maybe I should read more conversationally usefumaterial like high school manga?

I think her series on Tae Kim is very based. I'm pretty sure anyone that watches that playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JuHi-yKGFc&list=PLg9uYxuZf8x9hoAsh5-fjGDBw-17O5oTy)) will agree that her points are valid. Shit like 'だ and です are both a copula' isn't controversial for example, but Tae Kim still proposes something completely differnt in his model. I don't feel like Tae Kim is super bad, but he definitely describes some stuff in a weird way or omits important explanations.

I watched almost all of Cure Dolly's main playlist and I definitely came away with a lot satisfying explanations whereas reading Tae Kim left me with a lot of open questions.

they do different things, wanikani is a way to trade your time and money for nothing, if you have fun then thats cool, and i don't mean it in an insulting way, most games are the same, it gamifies kanji, but it doesn't really have much to do with japanese, or anything else and finishing wanikani wont do much for you
anki is a way to hold onto memories using the magic of spaced repetition, wanikani too uses a srs but in a much more limited way, you can do wanikani in anki if you like, think theres a deck, theres also kklc

she's anti core decks and for a good reason.
the true core words are so common you would just learn them if you just immersed. i'd even go as far as to say you would learn them much faster as you're seeing them in context over and over again.
as for commmon-but-not-really-core words, they depend on what the sort of content you regularly consume so you might as well just mine them.

I don't see how the wanikani approach is that much worse than anki though. It's not really any more gamified other than having a colourful UI. It's still just SRS but you type the answer in instead of just you yourself acknowledging whether you knew the card in your deck or not.
Not trying to shill it or anything but I thought the radicals approach it follows felt a lot more structured than when I tried the core 2k deck. Obviously wanikani doesn't give you the same breadth of vocabulary though which is why I wanted to try doing both at once and was hoping someone in the same boat could share

a vocab list won't make it easier, the reality is the main issue you are experiencing is that your brain is not used to think in the right way, even if you know every word, itll feel wrong for a while till you get used to it

Is anki/flashcards worthwhile or just wastes of time? I tried using anki and some core deck a couple years ago, but I quit after 2 months or something because I hadn't been able to memorize much of anything. I remember the sounds for car and room, but I don't remember anything else. It just felt tedious as fuck to do it, not remember it and then have to go through over a 200 cards everyday and not remember any of them. Would it be better to just start reading something and looking up every word and going from there or am I just tarded?

doubt it matters much. the biggest difference is passive vs active reading.
by that i mean, just reading without being too bothered by the things you don't understand vs making sure you understand everything you read.
both have their advantages. active reading can be tiresome, but passive reading isn't useless either. it can help you with making japanese feel more natural to you

i did that for a long while.
Like 2 years of reading nothing but webnovels and manga.
But I kinda hit a plateau.
I'm sure part of that was because I lacked sufficient listening practice. But having started using Anki also helped me improve.
Just keep your usage under 30 minutes.
