Kanji are just the way words are written in japanese
You don't need to learn kanji do know words
You probably knew sushi or tsunami way before learning how they're written, then you know these words and can understand them in spoken conversation
Then when you see 津浪 you just have to attach the word tsunami to it, repeat it in your head everytime you see it until you don't even have to think about it and here you go you know how to read it without knowing it's kanji

Someone on discord suggested I incorporate the VN freq data into my difficulty analysis of media. Thought of a clever way to do it without running my own analysis on raw sources, and results were interesting so I uploaded them into a table you can sort by clicking the headers.

Do we just accept monochrome illustrations just because it's japanese? Or does it matter to anyone else? I just started a western ero-comic and noticed after some time they moved on to coloring their comic. Coloring can add visually, obviously, but at what cost? I'm just wondering if adding color makes the story lose its flavor in some way and if the coloring is literally a shining ball in the face of a cat or child compared to keeping it monochrome. I understand that if an artist gets more money to splurge or an extra hand to help, does it make it more commercial than niche. Kinda like a 'jumping the shark' in TV. I know for at least americans colored comics has been the norm since at least the days of original Superman and Batman. Seems one could get more done by bypassing the coloring and focus more on the illustrations and story.

Not him but those are done by third-parties, though. Only decent ones I've seen are jojo and akira. I remember seeing a fan-made edit of the dragon ball colouring one that mixes in B&W with the colouring and it looks great, but the official release loses much of the impact of the original.

I modified the cards on the core 2k-6k Anki deck thing so that it would show the hiragana on the front alongside the kanji. I figured, hey, testing whether or not I know the vocabulary would be better if I could fuckin' read what the vocabulary is. But after the switch, I immediately realized my mistake: Leaving the hiragana hidden means I need to memorize not only the vocabulary, but the hiragana on top. I benefit myself by making things harder.

It's annoying, but I want to do this right.

Anime is from kitsunekko but the data is quite dirty, had to filter out some of the entries that had impossible stats.

Novels are simple enough to pirate. Itazuraneko has a huge library of them.

i learn them, theres no point in backlogging things, you get a feeling of how much time each card you add will take, so one of the things how much i mine depends to is what my load is at the moment. i used to mine every word i saw, but i really don't anymore, you can and do learn things regardless of if you mine them or not, too
these days i decide what to mine just based on what i find interesting, yesterday i mined the 十二支 (chinese zodiac) for instance, it really has no use whatsoever other than the dog star constellation is 戌 and 申 is monkey and other things like that but i love that stuff so...
but all of this is meaningless, the only thing i will say that might be of value to you is to try and figure out how much time you want to spend doing cards and be strict about not exceeding it, it can and will balloon out of control if you do not.
also don't stress too much about what you mine or not or when, just exposure to things does a lot of the work, probably most of it.
