Depends. It doesn't really help you in 10-12, and 9 gives you a good end so long as you clear it at all. I think playing with above-default lives or bombs is considered worse.

Continue all you want, just don't post youtube videos of your runs. If you feel the obligation to do without continues like most people, then strive for it by not using them.
