In Japan, if you want to buy Touhou games, you have to go to Comiket or Reitaisai to get them, and you have to pay money. On the English-speaking internets, any retarded 13 year old can download this "kewl geam" that he saw his older cousin playing from doujinstyle.

I'm sure the games are available on Share, so it's not like the Japanese fans are incapable of downloading it. They just choose to support the creator because they want to. Rather than stand in line at Comiket for 2 or 3 hours to buy the game directly from the creator (and incur the opportunity cost of those precious hours not being spent checking out other circles) they could just wait until the day after and pick it up from any of several doujin shops in Akiba. But people don't just go to Comiket to be "buyers" and "sellers" - they go to participate in communal spirit, love of the art form, and free-flowing exchange of creative energy. That spirit is what makes the Japanese doujin so amazing. And that spirit is totally absent from the American fan base. The mindset here is "how much stuff can I get for free?" People here feel like they're entitled to anything and everything that they want, for free.

This user is really living proof that technology has become too available. In the golden days of the internet, hosting videos online at least required that you own some webspace and a domain, so there was at least a small bit of financial responsibility on the part of the creator. And this deterred some people from posting their mindless drivel on the net (although there was still no shortage of mindless drivel) because their mommy didn't want to shell out 5 bucks a month so little Madison could have a video of herself dancing to the latest N'Sync song online. But then Youtube came along and took away that last little barrier against stupidity. And now that web cams come standard on any computer that isn't powered by a hand crank, the problem is compounded. It's now only a matter of time before we start seeing Touhou AMV's with footage shamelessly ripped from IOSYS videos put to Linkin Park and Evanescence songs. And then you'll see "1200 Year Old Virgin" caliber fan art gracing the booths of Artist Alleys.

But I do take a certain degree of solace in the knowledge that because there is no TV series to put on Cartoon Network, it will never achieve the complete level of saturation in the west that Naruto and Bleach have. Likewise, since there is no officially licensed merchandise, you won't see action figures being sold at Borders. Unless the powers that be at Borders suddenly take an interest in $500 hand-painted garage kits, that is.
