So I've found something that's helping me a bit with retention, this jisho app apparently also has a study feature. So when I see a new word I look it up and try to pay more attention to the kanji and details, but I don't give it too much attention.
Its helping me distinguish from what was essentially a mumble of squiggly lines. Specially useful to distinguish when words have kanji in common, or when a kanji is very similar one to another.

I also got that wanikani deck, because it supposedly goes the kanji radical way and builds up from there.
The downside of this method I guess is that I can build a meaning association with the kanji, but not the spelling, which varies greatly depending on where its used.
Though the study feature built in the app isn't as good either, its something that I can do with spare time. Is the method good or is it a trap? Or should I try the wanikani deck?

The reading for 芝 is the one you learned with the kanji. The reading for 生 is one you haven't seen before (exception). It's ふ, and you can remember it by thinking how you were such a fool (ふ) for putting all that poison on it. Now it's dying, and now it's becoming less of a lawn.

Well there is your problem, do you just keep hitting again, adding up review till you give up?
The problem is that you're the card again and not even attempt at it, you're not really exercising your brain and memory. I had a similar problem where I was just bashing through cards and they weren't sticking.

I suggest trying something like I'm doing in my previous post, taking more time in each card, looking up the individual kanji or radicals, googling it up or whatever. Also not hitting (2) or (4) is dumb imo, those buttons are there to be used, if you can recall somewhat the meaning or pronunciation of a word, hit hard so you can see it more often, if its something that you can recall straight away, just hit easy so it doesn't clutter future reviews.

How exactly does the max reviews per day setting work in Anki? I just came back from a long hiatus. Well not too long. It was only like 40 days or so and I had about 1800 cards due. So I set my max limit to 300 cards and did 300 cards yesterday.

But when I looked today I only have like 130ish cards due to complete. I knew that was wrong because I didn't review 1700 cards the other day only reviewed 300. So I went and set my max up to max again and sure enough it brought it up to like 1500 or so. Then when I set my max back down to 300 well bam I owe 300 cards today. So I guess why did an originally show me 130ish?

I decided that until I catch up on my reviews, I'm going to make it a daily thing to set my max reviews to 9,999 to populate everything into the day and then sending it back to 300 reviews so that I'm not hiding more reviews than I already am. hmm dunno, it could be faster, but i just set aside time to do this:
mine words from ln into a placeholder deck (anime goes straight to mining deck - add more sentences if not sticking). the mined backlog sits there.
frequency sort the backlog.
browse through the placeholder deck to see what i feel like repping in my next session and delete whatever i question why i added it in the first place. i just do 10 new cards per day atm, so i pick 10.
use an anki plugin that adds a right-click context menu and i send it to immersion kit search or just copy paste.
immersionkit has a "Mining" pulldown menu with buttons to add Sentence, Sentence with Furigana, Image, Sound, Translation (don't) to clipboard.
move 10 cards to the mining deck for next session
for me, this process of making the card is my first rep. i handpick which sentences i want to add to the card. when i rep it for the first time, i often pass just because i saw it in immersion then saw it again while setting up the card.

a youtuber named akodearest shared in one of her videos that all her teachers told her that she can simply skip n5 and go straight to n4. i was stunned because i'd been stuck learning n5. of course, i have no problem with n5 kanji (as long as I keep refreshing it in my memory). n4 seems like s decent level to actually hold a small talk and n3 for a decent conversation. i just want to know if anyone actually skipped n5. just so you know, i just learned whatever vocab and grammar points i needed. i don't have intentions on taking a jlpt exam when I get to japan or something. i just saw it as a "rough guide" for my proficiency. ...but just in case i do take the jlpt exam, i want to increase my chances of passing n3 somehow... with god's help...

iam at a point where i test just for reading so i can mass a truckload of cards and im quickly back to consooming. i do this because i think words stick alot better in related context clusters instead of alone or single sentences. the reading on the other hand is the single thing you have to bruteforce memorize.

Nah, its mostly kanji, but just like coreXwhatever, its full loan kata words, and words that you would barely ever use.
The core ones specially are full of crap that you would generally have no interest in, with the exception maybe of improved 2.3k, that besides having a bit more common everyday stuff, also has pictures that could help hammer down memory. Though I've been reluctant to drop the transition deck, since I just want a bare base to be able to start immersion, and transition is supposed to be just that.
