Today I found out my cousin is learning Japanese and wants to talk to me about it. I just realized I haven't read anything normal. I've read a few eroge and a few volumes of Zero no Tsukaima, neither of which I am willing to talk about. And admitting I've been studying for 15 years and haven't read anything is also too embarassing.

Why would a teenage girl even want to learn Japanese?

also just from looking at the site, most everything they sell is on youtube for free if you spend a moment looking.
i don't know, its your money, but if you are expecting some magical shortcut/revelation/revolutionary insight in exchange for it, there is no such thing, if there were, no force on earth could keep it secret
look up kodansha kanji learners course (kklc) in library genesis, it has a lot of etymology stuff and is free (出航!)

listening is impossible
reading is fun

Is this a sentiment you guys (more experienced than me) shared at one point in your journey? I can get into a flow with reading, searching some unknown words and continuing for a while. I cannot get *as* into watching anime (no jp subs), since the flow is disrupted and I don't get what's going on without pausing/repeating lines. Will my listening catch up to my reading ability if I git gud at reading and then watch with jp subs (so I actually have the reading speed to parse phrases)?

I imagine they are just separate skills that need to be trained on their own, but my "problem" is that reading is way more enjoyable.

Right, thanks a lot. I'll aim to get there and see how I feel when I do
>how can it be reckless?
No idea, maybe reckless was the wrong word. The general advice online is to have a building block approach by reading easy manga and I thought that maybe a full-on eroge would be too many new words to even be worth the time. Though now I think I'll just keep at it since I skimmed it earlier and a lot of the sentences between the MC and his imouto were fine to read.
Just gotta brute force this shit, no pussy building blocks to make myself feel good.
>if it's too hard in the beginning, then do just 10 minutes every day and spend the rest of the time on easier stuff.
Yeah I'll probably do something along these lines and not just stick to one thing. Thanks for the advice.

As someone who is also a beginner, it sort of works but can't be your main source, it has to be supportive of actual studying, like anki for example.
It is great though for you to get familiar to listening to natives talk nihongo. Because it does feel overwhelming at first with seemingly spouting a bunch of consonants at really high speed, so you need to get used to that, and while studying you will start to pick words here and there and get a better feel for the sentence structures.
For example, the opposite is really bad, like studying too much but not hearing japanese at all, will lead you to internalize wrong sounds which makes it much harder to recover from.

Also, another resource to use Tadoku books, with fitting audio tracks, it isn't just background chatter, you have to focus more but it really works. Also keep in mind that as a beginner, you sort of have to start with kid's books, because you're learning kid's vocabulary.

if they are familiar with the alphabet/phonetic script used, then they can read and understand everything they could understand had they heard it instead. and if they don't understand something on paper they wouldn't understand it if they heard it either.

the reason why it seems like those people can hear but not read is because written content is typically much more dense than the conversations they have at home. their actual proficiency with the language is overall low and if you presented them with the same content then the method of delivery would make no difference

Seriously though, Kanji is reading and is essential to learning and understanding 日本語.
At some point you're just gonna have to rely on a dictionary and trying to look up what you don't know, but until you get to that point you're gonna need at least a full set of basic vocab to be able to read stuff without killing yo-self. This is what core decks are for, along with transition and whatever.
Whatever kanji you're gonna need after that will be whatever ambience you're immerse yourself in, be it manga, eroge, real life, dating, etc...

the point is dunning kruger beginners who complain about not being to hear words they """know""" in text don't actually know the words they struggle with

they would have a hard time reading something like that and when you show them the kanji version it would turn out they already """know""" a lot of the words they struggled with because when they """"learned"""" those words they just looked at the kanji, sounded it out and didn't internalize anything. the kanji crutch gave them the meaning and without it they are lost, that's why they can't hear them

they actually work out the meaning every time they see those problem words from their kanji without realizing, but they think this means they know the word's meaning

this only happens with japanese because kanji becomes a crutch once you clear the pre-beginner stage and gives dunning krugers a false sense of knowledge

To add to this, that book is not bad but it feels more like a reference point to check out later.
I've found this lesson guide "visualizing japanese grammar" (I think also on tatsumoto)
https://www2.gwu.edu/~eall/vjgnew/vjghomepage/vjghome.htm

Even though audio is shit, is very easy to understand and get started on grammar. But like mentioned again and again, its something you should get stuck studying on, but more to complement on how sentences are built while you get familiar with japanese from context somewhere else. And check the reference on the first book mentioned when you have doubts and clear out misunderstandings.

Late to answers graph thing, but:
This shows how I really screwed up, I was going about barely understanding cards but answering 'good' to most things. I've said this yesterday. But even after anons told me to not get overkill about, I went ahead and forgot the deck to start again (actually ended up getting another similar deck in different format).
So my statistics are all screwed up, because the overwhelming 'good' presses, but most of the 'again' presses are probably from these two days.
Yesterday I punched through 60 new cards, because indeed about of them I got right easily enough. The other half not so much, but only about 10 of them I really struggled with for some reason.
But indeed, I think this is something important to do, because if you just bash through cards even if you're not close to getting them right, then you're not really trying to exercise your memory. Then no matter how many times you see it again, it really wouldn't stick.
Retention may not be as important later on, I'm no get stuck up if I don't remember them straight away, but if I'm not at least trying to pull my memory and keep repeating the card until I can least it get it right once, then I'm sort of missing the whole point of spaced repetition that is Anki.

pretty sure that's normal. It's probably different for different people, but I used to retain the meanings of words/kanji much sooner than their readings. I think it's particularly understandable since kanji have multiple different readings based on context etc. but the problem goes away wtih time, in my experience

seeing the words and phrases in full context rather than in the anki vacuum will also help with developing this.

I actually just did a 60 new card custom study because I knew I probably get a lot of them right from the get go. But it was gruesome.
Before I even had 30 newcards/day, and messed with timing because I didn't know how Anki werks (still kinda don't).
But indeed, someone said practically you should only be hitting again/good most of the time.

This time around I'll just leave on the default and not risk messing with it (more than I already, afterall the stats are already fucked). I will also tone down to just 20 cards per day, but be stricter to try and remember them.

the 咲けない is throwing me off because I keep interpreting it as "cannot bloom" but all the subs I found for this quote on the anime (ak, Hiryuu and commie, also DeepL) say that the sentence means something along the lines of "There are flowers that can only bloom in here"
it also makes sense to read it as such within the context of both these pages and the scene on the anime

What do you mean? How I deal with ease cards?
Well from the documentation the ease button just advances the card to a next level, increase the period of repetition, while hard decreases the period of repetition.
Tatsumoto says the Anki algorithm for those buttons don't work like we think it does, and that's what I think he means. Even if you just hit 'good', the period will still increase while the card goes from new/learning/mature... So in turn I don't think its necessary unless you're tired of seeing some card too much.

Russia is still yay to stay if you have a woman passport. But I do not. There is a law that I if I am over 18 and have a male passport I need to apply for registration in the military service otherwise you will go to jail. Not mentioning the disgusting anti-humanity process of the military health service commission when you need to walk naked and show your genitals to soome random militaristic "doctors" : the fairi are sent to psychyatric camps there when you are not only damaged by "meds" but also loose your last rights so you can own nothing and" be happy"; that is what you get for being cute magical and dreamy fairi while the beasts craving for cruelty and serve demon lords are succeed and get anything they want and live fairi dreams
yay thanks so much for replies everyfairi Btw I never mean suicide by yaying myself in fact it is opposite like illness to yayness and demons to angels so it is more like just sleeping and not doing anything and just cry. Well asylum seems to be my last chance but Do you have any protips like what should i Do because I have an ultra high social anxiety and aren`t there are like a tests if I am not a spy. Also I am woried that there is some kind of prison like system of living if you are a refugee and there is only one chance and I should choose embassy yayly Also I do not know if I should better embassy in Japan or go to the country I want myself as a tourist and apply for asylum there

Yeah they get money but it's just so predatory. Do you have any download managers to recommend?

I've never used a download manager but what does it do (besides "manage")? Couldn't I just use my browser?

>> No.41154806

>>41154769
you copy the url of the bullshit site
then it goes through the 30s wait hoops and prompts you with the captcha and then it gets started
the best thing for me is that it 'saves' your progress. so these shitty sites will have you downloading at <100kb/s, and far too often the download fails because their shitty throttled servers give up and forget who you are and cancel the download. so in a browser you need to download 100% of the file uninterrupted, but this download manager lets you pick up where you left off.
also it lets you list things to download. so i can go manga 'shopping', copy all the urls for the various volumes of a manga, click play and it'll go through them and prompt me for the captcha whenever they're ready, checking if the arbitary hour wait between downloads is done.

>This add-on increases the ease of Anki cards when you consecutively rate them "Good", or "Easy".
>Rating a card "Good", or "Easy" is considered a "success".
>Once you exceed a specific amount of successes, it is considered a "success straight".
>In such a case, Straight Reward will raise the ease of these cards.
>The default settings will mean that you need three consecutive successes to recover the ease loss after pressing "Hard", and four to recover from "Again".
But isn't that basically what Anki already does?
Tbh I don't get how anki rates things, the stats show something like 250% ease cards, and that makes no sense. So I rather not mess with it.

actually there are several, but it's more profitable NOT to release it. Why do you think there articles every month/year about someone curing/potentially curing and then NOTHING comes from it. unless they themselves were a fraud and the outlet that released that article just wanted clicks/ads.

no, anki decreases ease when you hit hard or again and increases it when you hit easy

not be born japanese but at least born in japan, i don't care about being a gajin, just the country is safe and effective. essentially if I was born the same year/day but in nagano or osaka or hakodate and a kid in the 90s. sneaking to watch gaki no tsukai late on sundays and learning about various pc communications well before AOL was a household name and WAAAY before social media shitted up the internet. being around for comiket at 3-5hrs by train instead of 10hrs by plane. and the joy of knowing that I can get a can of corn soup on almost any corner from a vending machine. also knowing my parents are at least somewhat smart enough to not get tricked by a doctor that was taught in hebrew tricks to cut my foreskin. in others, swapped where i grew up, not that I am a random takeshi or saito

But it does increase spacing time just by hitting 'good' too, If that's the same as rating it 'easy', I don't know.

yes, it increases the interval when you hit good, but it doesn't increase the card's ease, which is a multiplier for the interval that can be used to make it so that easier cards have longer spacing, which can theoretically reduce the number of unnecessary reviews
