I think you are looking too much into it, a mute "ch" is closer to チ than to チュ. The latter kinda implies a more pronounced vowel.

For whatever the reason you're looking this up, many english words don't actually translate directly to kana as you would think, they a more of borrowed words.

What’s fastest way to acquire a ton of vocab? I’m at 20 new cards a day on anki, all taken from my reading (novels mostly). I’ve got my interval modifier set pretty low to help me and time isn’t an issue for me right now.

thats what makes them help memory, you see everything in nature is unique, except for letters, every typeset character is the same as every other typeset character, so if you don't know a word there is nothing salient to help you distinguish it from any other words.

I feel like I've been going through anki a bit wrong. I'm some hundred of cards in, and now I'm encountering a lot of old review cards that didn't stick at all. There are a few that get repeated a lot and I can tell at glance what it is. On another hand there are a lot that I can almost tell the meaning, but not the pronunciation, and then quite a lot that I can't tell either.
So have I have been too lax with my answers? Should I've kept hammering the cards again and again to at least get it right from the get go? I feel like its getting harder to tell them apart specially with the same kanji appearing with more words in different combinations.

delete/suspend the cards that are causing you pain, you will pick up most of your vocab through immersion anyway
focus on the cards you can remember as at your level the lowest hanging fruits are the ones that give you the best results in the long run
stick to doing anki and focus on the easy reviews, then transition to reading shit and eventually those (previously) hard words that you deleted/suspended will become easy (you can re-add them later or you can just ignore them) and eventually you'll stop doing anki altogether

the algorithm is designed in such way that you should fail to remember 15-20% of the cards at the time when it shows you them for review. it's just how it works. showing you things before they drop below 99% chance of you remembering them is just inefficient and would drown you in a flood of unnecessary reviews

japanese is considered by many one of the hardest languages in the world, did you think you could just waltz in, look at the glyphs once, and then be done?
everyone would know japanese of that was possible.
you aren't particularly stupid, everyone has been where you are (maybe not geniuses, i guess), you are normally expected to forget some 15% of what you actually learn but thats higher at the start.
the goal is to hold onto memories you made elsewhere and make it so whatever stuck when you read whatever, sticks for longer, perhaps for good, or rather, finding out when it came unstuck so you can stick it again
the most you can do in just anki is learn the readings, but the memories you have to make elsewhere.

yeah, just try to remember the readings, and try to spend most of your time doing something in japanese that you find interesting (stories, manga, streams, whatever) and trying to understand, be humble and start with easy stuff
many people seem to think they can get good at japanese then do whatever it is they wanted to get good at japanese for, but its more of a you get better at japanese by trying to do whatever it is you wanted to do do japanese for over and over again situation

I think that's a pretty good, I tried reading even with furi but its pointless if you don't know the words themselves and can't put a meaning to them. Vocabulary is the hardest part, but if you have enough to be able to read while just needing to look a few words here and there, it can work out, and I guess that's the strong point of mining unknown words during immersion.
