What is this?

/jp/ has started on a project to translate the visual novel Hatsukoi, one of the highest rated according to the Japanese.

Are you in need of translators?

Of course! Anyone with knowledge of Japanese (and English) is welcome to join in and start translating with the simple and easy-to-use REtrans™ Web Interface.

Are you in need of editors?

Definitely. You don't even need to know Japanese to help improve the English text, so your participation is encouraged.

What is the length/progress/ETA?

The total length of the content is approximately 32k lines. We are slightly below 40% as of this post. At our current rate of ~3800 lines a week, we'll finish sometime in February. But the more translators we have, the faster everyone can enjoy the results!

One thing I was worried about was keeping the 。 and full space punctuation in, and I just looked at Anzu's translation and it made me remember why.

When there are the three horizontal dots, after that, if it's the end of a sentence, they normally put a 。, right? Even if we change that to a period afterwards, it's going to look really funny.

Also, I'm worried that if people are consciously trying to keep the full-width Japanese punctuation in, they're going to try to fit their sentence around the previous sentence's punctuation.

For example, from Anzu:
「……what do you mean。Because you didn't want to come home?」

Normally where the 。 is there should be a question mark instead, right? But if people are consciously trying to leave in the original, I have a feeling that they'll be trying to leave in the original punctuation, even if it doesn't look natural in English. This has me worried, and this is why I had brought it up recently. :/

Also, I noticed that there are some lines that have been translated randomly, like, just one line in the middle of several hundred untranslated lines. Who's doing that?

Sorry if I'm being obnoxious in any way.

Don't wait for the translation to finish, edit all you can NOW, so then there won't be a headache as the project reaches the end phase. Editing may sound simple but it still requires reading through the entire script. In terms of game length, this game is around the same length as Cross Channel. Reading through that game itself in English takes at least several hours. We should all get a general consensus on the punctuation issue though... Here's my vote

Eliminate all the Japanese punctuations altogether, but just keep the horizontal ellipses. However, let's not be excessive like the author who sometimes uses 6 on both ends of a single phrase.
And yes I know I've used the Japanese punctuation for all this time, but I think I'll just quit it and use English punctuation now. Actually makes my life easier not having to alt+~ every 10 seconds. Though I'm still not really sure how many ellipses to keep so I'll just leave them there for now.

To editors, one more important thing to note is that the text should flow. As in the lines before and after a line must "sound right" together (unless there's a scene change, and even then there's usually transition text)
A quick google of translation theory, here are the aspects of an ideal translation
* Accurate: reproducing as exactly as possible the meaning of the source text.
* Natural: using natural forms of the receptor language in a way that is appropriate to the kind of text being translated.
* Communicative: expressing all aspects of the meaning in a way that is readily understandable to the intended audience.
It's up to the translators with the first point, but editors can seriously contribute to the second and third points. If the second two points aren't assessed、might as well just read this with AGTH.

>> No.4144743

>>4144705
Wait, so no 「」? I've been keeping them since shift + 2 gets irritating.

>> No.4144811

I agree that editing should start immediately and these punctuation issues etc should be handled quickly.
It would be awful for this to be fully translated then read like a babelfish translated book...

The main point of a visual novel is text, it's, as the title may suggest, a novel!!
If the text doesn't flow well, there's no point in playing it since that is how the player goes through the game.

I also think other bugs such as fixing the game so it displays half-width characters should be a priority instead of waiting until the last minute.

we should be putting all resources in where we can in order to get a translation out efficiently while maintaining some standard of quality.

there's never a reason not to multi-task when you're able to.

also, lolita, if you're not translating or hacking it, why aren't you helping with editing? just a thought.

before that i think we should set standards though, for how we want the text to be (especially in regards to jp/en punctuation)

I would say keep them as they look better. But then I'm pretty sure I put in 『』 a few times in there. That should definitely change to quotation marks.

>> No.4144923

About the punctuation issue.

At first, translators were urged to keep Japanese quotes since RWI had bugs that would make files unusable if certain patterns of quotes were used. However, these have been fixed so there is no technical reason why we shouldn't use English punctuation.

Here's my official viewpoint as a project manager:

>I also think other bugs such as fixing the game so it displays half-width characters should be a priority instead of waiting until the last minute.
We have 2.5 months. Cudder has said she'll work on that, but has the script assembler for Editorashi and IRL work to deal with first. Editorashi release is February so we're focusing on that first. If anyone else is able to fix the fullwidth text before then, go ahead and work on it.

>also, lolita, if you're not translating or hacking it, why aren't you helping with editing? just a thought.
I'm managing the Editorashi project as well. That needs more attention at the moment, given the release schedule I explained above (and the nature of the ones working on it.) I have done some edits on this project though.

A lot of stuff you have right, but I think you have a habit of leaving out a few words when you translate (maybe you didn't know what they meant?) which changes the meaning of the sentence.

for example 三木ぽんのことなんだからそうとは限らないと思うよ
was translated as
I don't think it's just Miki
the part you're missing is the そうとは, which makes it "Just because it's Miki doesn't exactly mean that's the case" or something to that effect.

Some other lines are also missing several words when translated (which changes the meaning if they're gone). Just try not to leave out words, even if you don't know what it means with them in, 'cause that changes the whole sentence a lot of the time (´ω`;)

I'm not a native speaker, but I find "That's not necessarily so" to sound odd. I'd have gone for something along "That's not necessarily the case" or "It's not necessarily that way". "So" just sounds wrong somehow.

>> No.4157361

A native could just say "Not necessarily, since it's Miki we're talking about." or "It's Miki after all, so not necessarily." or any number of other permutations of that. This is a very context senstive phrase due to the referential nature.

Which brings up another point: "Just because it's Miki doesn't exactly mean that's the case." and "That's not necessarily so, since we're talking ab out Miki-pon here." can have different shades of meaning. The first is somewhat accusatory in that it implies that Miki would do something like that based on past experience, whereas the second is a more neutral or defensive tone wherein the speaker is attempting to ward off accusations directed at the subject in question.

I'm sorry but this honestly made me laugh. Less than 1 week ago. The point is to fix bugs BEFORE they actually cause problems, so you shouldn't be noticing anything. I personally think the text looks fine; you also have to remember that fixing it entails knowing how (I don't). So once again you're only focusing on your own opinion. I've been around for past threads too and this has been commented on multiple times.
Are you planning on only valuing your own opinion when releasing this, or do you have any plans on listening to what the people at /jp/ have to say at all?

Is the REtrans site acting up for anyone else? I keep getting errors/slow loading today.

Also, I don't know if I can keep doing a consistent 100 lines per day like I have since I'm starting classes tommorow. Depends on how well I can balance leisure, class/homework, and translation.

We are aware of this. Server daemon is experiencing a high load. All I can say for now is to try again at a later time.

So far, everything looks good except for some text wrapping issues. I'll get Cudder to work on that along with the text width.

Latest version of all files (put in scenario.xp directory to use)
