This is exactly what I'm setting up right now, seeing if mpvacious, japreader, yomichan, and stuff like that are mining properly
for videos its a bit harder because you have to ensure proper subs and timing and etc, and I guess you really should only attempt to start these after getting a more solid basic vocab.
Another thing I'm kinda confused about is Yomichan mining, giving that it usually looks up just the word and not sentence in context. Plus it also seems that the more common words are already all included in the core decks (which makes sense).

I had the same surprise to this, honestly I recommend Switching to the 1k transition deck, it provides a lot of the same words, but in a order that makes more sense and with sentences that support each other (eg context helps comprehension). And in general just the actual more used words you will see wherever there is japanese to see.

I really hate how it has finally come to this but after years of studying I think I'm starting to reach the point of exhaustion. I'm ready to throw in the towel.
The kanji are just so fucking numerous... it's insane. Couple it with multiple readings and it just becomes an immense task. I've used anki so fucking much and yet I still have to stop and look up kanji I encounter in manga. It seems endless...

It's probably wholly on me, since my "study" sessions are very sporadic. I just don't have what it takes to keep myself to a consistent study schedule. Sometimes I'm really motivated for like a few weeks but then I abstain from doing anything for months. In those very months I start forgetting half of what I learned.
A self-sustaining cycle essentially.
Maybe I'm NGMI after all. I don't have a sliver of discipline. I slack off all the time and this is the result.

I'm not even sure there's a better methodology at this point. It doesn't help that i'm too awkward and shy to actually take the initiative to talk to real Japanese people aside from your occasional YouTube comment. I just hate the thought of humiliating myself with broken Japanese.

What should I do? I don't want to throw what knowledge I have away and yet I know beforehand that I'm prone to slacking off. I just wish I had motivation!

What do you guys do when no matter how many times you see an Anki card you just can't remember the romaji/hirgana/spelling however you put it. Like I look at a card I recognise the kanji I know what the card means but I can't remember how to say it.
Should I just go old school and write out the kanji its spelling and its meaning over and over again on paper? Usually I can think of a story or trick in my mind to remember something I am struggling with but there are a few that I just go blank every time.

Starting from the fact that I've always thought I was pretty decent at japanese, started learning 3 years ago, may of 2019, passed the N2 last year summer of 2021 with a very good 164/180 score, thought I could probably ace the N1 pretty easily the last months. Until today.

I tried to read a Visual Novel (fate stay night) which I was really intereated in and it opened my eyes, where to start. I literally couldn't understand half of what I was "reading", or trying to read, holy shit, I google translated 2/3 sentences because of weird grammar and stupie sentence structure, and oh my god, so many new kanji and words as well, I thought I had mastered them and that I was almost done with it, but no, in about an hour, before I gave up, I mined more than 100 words and like a third of them had kanji I had never seen, like, yeah, I still find new kanji sometimes but not dozens of them like that, what the fuck. I know about 2000 kanji I'd say at this point but after checking the internet apparently around ~3000 is the amount the average educated japanese person knows. Holy shit. No no no no no. And they are complicated as fuck.

This experience opened a new world to me. There's so many layers of japanese. I spent time with anime, manga, some easier light novels, could read some news and social media posts and was just overall enjoying myself until I realized how far actual native level fluency still was. I never understood everything 100% of course, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I wasn't struggling too much. I don't know what to think. People told me that I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was. Do I really know anything even. In reality I can't even watch or read most shonen and seinen like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. yet without looking up sentences or a couple of words per episode/chapter. I mostly enjoy fighting series but they're so damn hard with philosophy and attacks and tactics and yoji and proverbs and super casual terms and shit. I thought I was still decent because I could get the gist of them but welp, I was just lying to myself.

Are ~10-15 hours a week, 1~3 hours daily of immersing and anki really not enough. I've done that for literally years already, how many more to go to be able to enjoy everything I want in japanese without it feeling like a pain. They told me that anything below 4~5h hours was barely anything if I wanted to reach native fluency, a kid learns a language through constant input throughout the day for like 7-8 years before reaching actual fluency but like, I'm not 3 year old, it should be easier for an adult, right? 5h+ a day is fucking crazy, is that what it really takes to learn a completely different foriegn language? Because we're basically starting from 0, like a newborn, so I guess what they told me was true. The only completely fluent foreigners I know are Matt vs Japan and Dogen, who've spent literally half of their lives learning it without breaks, is THAT what it takes? I guess many would be happy with my level but I want to understand and enjoy everything I want like I do in english, THAT is my goal. I don't know, I just don't know what to say. I just want this LEARNING PART of my journey to end already.

It's 2022 and this language still isn't taught well.

Every source recommend starts at a different point and teaches different things, they all assume you already know the "secrets" to Japanese like "zero ga" and even the sources that mention these "secrets" gloss over them. (Dolly, who is very difficult to understand sometimes, glosses)
There is no single resource anyone can point to and say "if you follow this, moon runes and it's rules will be clearly explained and nothing is left out." (I've got everything you fags recommend, from targeted sentence cards to cure dolly) That's kind of a huge issue at this point in human history. There no reason this language needs to be taught more poorly than say, Spanish.
At the very least I should be able to Google a Japanese word and get the list of meanings; not find out later that there are secret, hidden (important) meanings that weren't explained properly, or at all, by Japanese language sources that are meant to teach the language.
Literal translations first or included at all would make learning this language easier than learning what it comes closest to meaning in English.
If this language was taught properly it would be easier to learn than English, aside from the kanji. You know I'm right. Stop trying to make it a sekrit club.

I read about 20 times faster than most of the rest of you - with the exception of a few bibliophiles. What is a true chore, taking up tens of hours for you, might very well only be a short eight to ten hours for me. Reading that fast - whether in English or Japanese - gives me a greatly different perspective than a lot of the others here.

1.Stamina- My stamina for reading in general and reading VNs in particular is far higher than the rest of you. Fundamentally, the idea of breaking a VN up over the course of weeks or months is alien to me, since even the longest ones will only take me about thirty hours (even in a busy week, I can usually manage to squeeze that in during breaks and meals).

2.Stress- Because VNs aren't drawn out for me, I don't suffer through the slice of life and daily scenes like some of you do. I can sit back and enjoy what I'm reading without feeling any stress whatsoever from the reading itself, as long as the VN isn't too bad. In addition, even scenes too difficult to read for the average VN-player are relatively simple for me to read, so i don't get significantly stressed out by that factor either.

3.Stimulation- One of the reasons people tend to get tired of VNs is a lack of stimulation due to low reading speed. I read fast enough that a good VN's stimulation will be close to constant, whereas a slow reader will sometimes come to feel 'in-between' scenes that are meant to be short and informative as painful and long.

4.Pleasure in reading- The act of reading in itself can bring me something close to sexual pleasure if what I'm reading is interesting. The reason I like chuunige is because to me, the stimulation from a good chuunige is actually better than sex. There is always something going on and that something is usually meant to shake up the emotions or engage the intellect. Since, for me, reading something like this really does give me so much pleasure, I can honestly say that concerns about length don't bother me at all, lol.
