Thanks for the new thread.
Posting kushikatsu. Because I fucking love kushikatsu.
Top thing is asparagus. Lower things from left to right are beef, scallop, broccoli, cheese x2, and quail egg.
It’s at a small kushikatsu place in a train station.
If you’re ever at Rinkutown station in Osaka (last JR and Nankai stop before Kansai airport) I can’t recommend this place highly enough.

I fucking love the classic Love Hotel aesthetic.
I also love the kind of overly-superlative names they’re given.
>Be in Namba
>see “Hotel Namba”
Regular hotel
>Be in Namba
>see “Hotel Golden Luxe Dream Splendour”
Love Hotel.

Bro I literally can’t have a favorite. There are too many that I love, and I go out of my way to try ones I’ve never tried before.
But for standards, I’ll almost always do broccoli, asparagus, cheese, and scallop. Left bottom on this one is pickled red ginger, followed by scallop, beef, and cheese.

Sorry, bro. I don’t drag an actual camera around with me daily, and 4chan has always had issues with portrait-oriented iPhone pics.

The problem is that the phones don't save the image in a portrait orientation, just save it in landscape and then use a EXIF flag to set the orientation for the viewer.
And 4chan strips all the EXIF tags. They probably should run an auto-orient on it before doing so, but you can also get mogrify from imagemagick and use a script to run an auto-orient (and resize) on your images after you have taken them, or dumped them. It's what I do.

Nah, I think I’ll just let the viewer tilt their head to the side. Neck stretches are good for circulation, dontcha-know?
I phonepost anyway; I’m glued to my computer all day for work, and don’t feel like spending extracurricular time with it.
I just try to primarily take landscape shots to begin with, as it makes more sense 95% of the time.

Like pic. I also love the signage outside Love Hotels. The 1hr deal is always called “rest” or “nap”
Tried walking into one once (not this one but same area) that listed it as “nap” and asking for 1hr so I could take a nap just to see what would happen.
Of course I was basically told “you can’t rent it by yourself”, which a lot of love hotels do to prevent a dude from renting a room and having another dude come later to meet him, since most of them aren’t about that.

If you’re western, when you go to a place like this people at nearby tables will try to discreetly glance at you, and see what utensils you’re using when and how you’re using them.
Because of course you’re automatically an expert in formal western dining, and I guess they want to be reassured they’re doing it correctly.

Also if visiting Nara you must try “kakinohazushi”.
It is an old form of sushi and was originally a narezushi, but now it’s just vinegared. But it does taste more strongly of vinegar then most styles, as it is still meant as preservation rather than just flavor, same as how it’s wrapped in a persimmon leaf because of supposed antibacterial properties.
They say it’s good for 7 days unrefrigerated, and that refrigerating it will ruin the texture.

As long as ryokan goes i guess anything outside of tokyo should be the same, of course they will look different like this one that is special.

In regions with a lot of volcanic hot springs, sure.
But sometimes people get confused with terms when booking.
“Onsen” just means the baths. And some places are just onsen.
“Ryokan” is an inn. While a lot of ryokan do have onsen, many don’t. So you can’t assume.
And also, many ryokan actually have private onsen. They tend to be more expensive, but are great if you want privacy. Or have tattoos. Or are wanting to bathe with a girl.

Sure, though you shouldn’t have trouble finding English language booking sites, and you’ll usually see it as “Ryokan with indoor/outdoor hot spring bath” or “Ryokan with private hot spring bath”
>and not relieve some of unique hentai scenes
Or if you’re traveling with a significant other. It would be a shame to not enjoy it together.
Onsen are way too damn hot (at least for me) to do anything hentai-related in the water though.
At least with a private one like pic, you can control the temp by adding some cold water.

I haven’t personally run into any places with “onsen” that wasn’t a hot spring, or at least piped their water directly from an underground hot spring, but it is technically possible with how Japan legally defines the term.

Ryokan means a Japanese style hotel.
Onsen is a term that refers to the phenomenon or place where hot water gushes out from the ground, or the hot spring itself.
It contains sulphur, salt, is alkaline or acidic, and is believed to be good for health.
A bath means normal warm water.
For business, a regular hotel bath is fine.
The purpose of a onsen is to bathe in it, which is why the location and ryokan are decided.

Ryokan can be traditional, modern, Japanese style, western style, and any mix/combination of those and anything in between.
That one in particular had a variety of rooms, the one in the pic was “mixed”.
Western furniture, but futon/tatami for sleeping, and the room containing the shower/bath which opened to the balcony was entirely wooden (pic).

The best analog between “Ryokan” and “hotel” would probably be comparable to “Bed & Breakfast” vs “hotel”.
You stay in a hotel because you need a place to sleep in order to facilitate doing other things.
You stay in a Ryokan/B&B to relax in it. It *is* the destination, for the most part.

>Were you a big ass weeb growing up?
I suppose you could say that. I have several siblings around my age, so when we were all younger my parents - both of whom worked full-time jobs - would frequently just plop us all down in front of the television set and put on a show or movie to keep us entertained. This, among other things, exposed me to Japanese media very early in life: for example, I was just the right age to ride the wave generated by series like Sailor Moon and Pokemon coming to the West. I was also introduced to Japanese video games around the same time - our babysitter, who happened to be an elderly woman and her retired husband - was a huge fan of the Mario series. My local grocery store carried the English version of Weekly Shounen Jump and by total happenstance I picked up a copy without really knowing what it was just to entertain myself on a long plane flight; I became an avid reader, purchasing the magazine every month for about three years or so before I started following various scanlation groups online in places like MSN. I still remember the exact copy: September 2003. As I grew older I started watching more anime, especially through Toonami and Adult Swim. Suffice to say I had a lot of exposure to Japanese media during some very formative years.

I guess another better way to describe instead of B&B, would be term inn, which isn't really used for modern hosting anymore. But it makes sense if you compare it to what a traditional Ryokan would be.
I would the reason why they are the main end destination would exactly because they are like a historical setting in itself, that you can literally immerse yourself in. Also I would guess that the best would have traditional/rural places to visit in the vicinity, like temples, shrines, some nature leisure, perhaps a natural hot spring like I mentioned before, and perhaps some of those seasonal kimono wearing festivals.

>what a traditional Ryokan would be
That’s the thing though. I mean if you’re staying at old historical ryokan that’s one thing. They are old Japanese style because they’ve been around since then.
But there are also plenty of “modern” ryokan with rooms furnished with western appointments, because there are a lot of Japanese who associate that with “luxury”, and they want to enjoy what they feel is a “luxurious” stay rather than a living history lesson.
Now of course I completely agree with you; given the choice, I’d much prefer to stay in a tatami room with floor seating/tables, and would enjoy every minute of the historical immersion. But that doesn’t always apply to domestic Japanese travelers.
It’s why you’ll see many “destination” hotels in Japan offer a a distinct grouping of “western” or “Japanese” style rooms.

>you still have to hand it to the guy running the stall
Well yeah, but it removes having to give someone an order, removes any miscommunication, etc.
it also helps keep prices down because the owner doesn’t have to pay someone to stand there and take orders and make change. It enables some of these tiny shops to run with 2 or even just 1 employee.
And the line goes more quickly, as of course it’s quicker to just insert money, push button, take change/ticket than is to be politely greeted by cashier, verbally place order, hand money, be politely thanked by cashier, he handed change, and whatever else.

>> No.41193549

>>41193059
I guess this photo is a shop on the conventional line platform of Shin-Osaka Station.
Buying a ticket is easy.
Just check the price and press the number button on the curtain.
"冷" in the small blue menu means cold.
Only one thing you have to tell the clerk.
It is "udon" or "soba".
The ticket only specifies the toppings, and the noodles are specified verbally.
