Maybe, but we might have to wait for a while. Animal leaders & Keiki are kind of on their own, which was great for their popularity, since I believe that establishing strong relationships among several new characters strengthen their lasting appeal rather than link them to old characters that may have other relations with more legacy and so finding a spot for the new character is difficult
But the one issue is that you can't just shove a WBaWC character out of nowhere. So the prospect of officially solving what's under Keiki's headscarf remain a mystery.

Im just disheartened. Its odd because you would think that veteran fan like me would be more on the side of sticking with long-time favourites, but im just sad looking at fate of most 16, 17 and 18 characters.
There are some artists who work with them, but majority of those two drew 16 then moved to 17 and then 18, and its mostly just couple regulars.
Its shame so much potential is getting wasted. And the void betwen populars and rest increases. And many of them like Sannyo, Mayumi, Narumi and others will soon be as obscure as PC-98 characters.

It is rather unfortunate, as with enough willingness, there's just as much to say if not more about these characters as there is for the likes of EoSD characters. I've also watched over artists I knew and how views fluctuated. His 2hu of heart which he'd draw way more often would get 5 times less views as the few instances he drew popular characters like Koishi. I prefer not to hold any grudges towards it. I've enjoyed most of the games, enjoy most eras Touhou has gone through and believe there are niches for each that the others can't fulfill as well. It is a shame that one essentially monopolises attention to this day, even if we do owe a lot to it, but it is what it is.
Ultimately though, there isn't much we can do about it. I choose to look at it from an half full glass perspective, as it still is Touhou, which is a land of opportunity for characters that happen to be born in it. Even giant IPs held back by corporations face the consequence of very few people entertaining the idea of fan works around the beloved characters, it's all just what ifs.

Its sad that fandom became stagnant and far too focused on "good ol days". When i see some new characters i often wonder what if they were introduced much earlier. How popular would Aunn be if she was introduced before MoF?
And another thing is that we sadly get less and less really impactful fanworks. Things that would become iconic within the fanbase. Its as if new characters never had a chance.

The fact that the vast majority of new fans only play Lost Word whose writers who would prefer to write yet another event starring or heavily featuring the EoSD cast rather than sharing the love with newhus like Mayumi doesn’t help much either. But oh well, Mayumi and Keiki still get good art, and that’s pretty good, I’d say.

It is easy to make parallels about characters that would have had themes explored much more throughly had they been brought up earlier. Aunn could have been the icon of cutesy Touhou content instead of Chen in a different time. Eternity Larva would have filled the slot of a Stage 1 Boss that hides their stronger, true self instead of Rumia (It's a lot more concrete for Larva, in that case).
But again, we can't really rewrite history. It is what it is, and at our scale going forward, I believe the best we can do is build an environment as creative as the rest, push the potential jokes or bits of lore forward, and just appear as mighty as can be to the wider Touhou community, even if the battle is uphill, or at its most pessimistic, already lost.

Which is why i said that we are in feedback loop. More and more fans interacts with Touhou mostly via fanworks. And those tends to heavily lean towards very specific set of characters. And when those fans decide to be "content creators" they also tend to focus on those characters.

I think another big part of problem is how very nature of fanworks changed. Gone are times of those multipart doujin series that really expanded on characters and made people interested in them. The last one i can think of is "Vector Spectacle" which is fantastic example of how amazing Touhou fanworks used to be, and how they menaged to put so much life into characters.
Another problem is that less and less doujins get translated and uploaded in easily accesible places. Take example Ryuchi works, he did so much stuff about Wbawc cast but noone ever touched it.
