What's the best way to improve kana speed reading?

ill write down the definitive guide to learning a language for you. someone save and repost this, nevermind all the other bullshit guides, this is literally all you need to know.

step 1: grind hiragana and katakana over the weekend
step 2: download anki and a beginner deck like core 2k/6k/etc.
step 3: create your own deck, add stuff later on you see often or find interesting. some will overlap with your core deck but that's fine just delete it from one deck.

step 2 and 3 are just preparation steps, don't finish core 2k before you progress. step 4 should happen on day 5 or so.
the next steps should happen simultaneously.

step 4: do a MANAGEABLE amount of anki every day. remember that if you do a bunch of cards today youll have to deal with a higher number of reps for the coming 2-3 weeks or so, so dont go crazy just because you feel motivated one day. do one of the other activities instead. everyones tolerance is different but max 20 minutes a day is fine. your ONLY goal with anki should be to NOT BURN OUT. if you miss a couple of days its fucking over.
step 5: start working on grammar, read basic explanations of how the language works. read through textbooks, grammar guides, explanations on youtube, whatever.
step 6: read shit. start with manga because pictures make it easier to understand whats going on. start simple obviously. reading slow is fine. dont whitenoise, look up EVERYTHING at first. if you cant understand a sentence after googling, ask someone.
step 7: listen to shit. vtubers are an infinite source of listening practice material. anime and drama work as well but use japanese subs or no subs. yes JAV counts too.
step 8: write shit, but GET CORRECTIONS. insist on getting corrections from native speakers. NATIVE SPEAKERS. do not try to immerse with learner communities. its okay to ask questions, sometimes they can link you to the right grammar article. but for getting corrections, only trust native speakers.
step 9: say shit. talk to japanese people over voice chat.

the proportion of steps 5-9 depends on your level.
when you start out it should be 80% step 5, 20% step 6.
lower intermediate level should be 30% step 5, 60% step 6, 10% step 7.
upper intermediate level should be 15% step 5, 50% step 6, 25% step 7, 10% step 8.
advanced level should be 5% step 5, 30% step 6, 25% step 7, 25% step 8, 15% step 8.
these are examples and rough estimates, of course you can vary the ratios depending on what you enjoy doing.

if you want to dedicate your autism to the craft you can learn to write kanji or study pitch accent on the side, along with anki.

You've got it completely wrong. For me, it's mainly a word card. I only look at the word until I can determine whether I can read it or not. You memorize the kanji and their components. When you have memorized many words and many kanjis, you start to make connections automatically. 警 is the same kanji as in the word 警告 keikoku. Kanjis with 祭 are always pronounced either sai or satsu. Kanjis with 㠯 are almost always pronounced as kan 官, 館, 管, etc.

Mnemonics are the key. Anytime I feel like I know a word but can't remember how to say it I force myself to come up with a mnemonic. No matter how random or stupid the mnemonic might be, just come up with something that will help you associate with the word. Eventually with enough repetition the mnemonic crutch won't be needed anymore and you'll just know the word.

Ignore tatsumoto spam. Take a day to learn hiragana (you don't need to have it 100% memorized) and skim katakana. Download a core deck (2k, 6k, doesn't really matter you likely will start your mining deck before you finish it anyway) and do as many new cards per day as you have time for in the beginning. Reviews will pile up FAST especially at the beginning when your retention is shit. 20/day will probably take 45 minutes per day within a couple weeks for example. It's better to do a bunch of words per day early on if you have the time for it though. Start reading as soon as you can and preferably set up a mining deck earlier rather than later.

While I am technically not in school it doesn't mean I am being lazy or "doing nothing". I just simply want to spend my time doing what I want to do and learning what I want to learn.

For the past 2.5 years now I have been studying Japanese. I cut out all pretty much English content
and from my life. The from the moment I wake up till the moment I sleep I am doing something in Japanese. Watching Drama,Youtube,Anime; Reading books/visual novels and making and reviewing flashcards from all of them (currently up to 15k words, aiming for 20k)

I have been told by multiple people "Why don't you go study Japanese at uni, studying by yourself doesn't mean anything?" somehow self study is deemed seen as less valuable then "official classes"(?) even though there is nothing left that traditional classes could teach me and I have learned more than I ever could at uni.

Native Japanese tutor here. I do this game with my students. I call it "How Many Strings Did You Catch?" It's highly effective but extremely hard. Rules:

1. Repeat a sentence I say right after they feel it.
2. Don't utter any English words. Replace "um" w/ ええと. Say, もういっかいぶっかけてください "One more time, please," when you need to feel it again. If you mess up and need to try again, say, もう いっかい うけとります "I'll try again."
3. Do not ask me to repeat without repeating at least one word or whatever the sound you've felt. (You'll be surprised how many sounds you can actually repeat.)
4. Do not think about the meaning in English! It's very important not to. If you don't repeat right after you feel it, you're most likely trying to translate. So, watch out for silence. Do it even if you have feelings you don't understand. Just mimic the sound/noise best you can even if it's excruciatingly frustrating.
5. When you have repeated the whole sentence perfectly, finally translate it to English. You'll be amazed how easy it is.
6. Speak the sentence to Google Translate w/ speech-to-text. You'll get the translation if you can say it right.

I do that exercise with my students in this order.

1) I have them translate English sentences to Japanese. I give them all the vocabulary and grammatical structures they need. I have them say the sentences aloud. I, then, say each sentence and have them repeat after me so they can improve their pronunciation. The classes are recorded so they can practice on their own later as many times they need, too.

2) Then, after a week or so I have them translate the same Japanese sentences to English.

3) Then, we play "How Many Strings Did You Catch?"

4) We play the game again after a month or so, but this time we start with me speaking the sentences. They've forgotten some things by then.

Try that. It might help you too.
