Okay listen the fuck up, actual advice from someone who learned Japanese through input, is now fluent in Japanese, and live in Japan.

Step 1: Learn hiragana and katakana https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/learning-kana-in-two-days.html
Step 2: Learn extremely basic grammar/sentence structure. https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/learning-grammar.html is a good place to start. Don't trust the shitters here recommending you garbage sites.
Step 3: JUST FUCKING watch WHATEVER anime YOU WANT TO watch AND KEEP DOING IT. Use Japanese subs and mpv scripts.

Yes yes I know kanji is hard, words are hard, whatever. Ignore rtk, ignore retarded kanji mnemonic methods, ignore any bullshit. Use Anki to make Targeted Sentence Cards, not vocab or word cards. Literally just spend time with the language, look up words you don't know in a dictionary, look up grammar points in a grammar dictionary (like this index https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/resources.html#grammar).). Don't fall for fucking bunpro or other shit. Keep immersing.
It takes time but that's LITERALLY all you need to do. At first it's slower because there's a barrier to entry (so-called "first few pages effect") but if you don't give up even just after a week or two of grinding out the same manga/anime/light novel/movie/whatever you want to immerse with, you WILL improve. Just listen and read whatever the fuck you WANT to listen and read.

I just finished Doraemon vol.1. Should I continue with vol.2? I will have to buy if so.

I also have Dragon Ball, Yotsuba&!, and Naruto vol.1's a/v to read if those are good stepping stones. I found I was starting to do integral work on learning of 'new' old vocab words towards the end of it. It was a learning experience for grammar most of the way through, the way I studied Japanese. And it really did help with writing basic sentences, 'originally' (or according to plan?).

I found it really fun, but anxious to get to the next thing by the time I was arriving towards the end of it.

Maybe I should take some time off and get vol. 2? I tried reading Dragon Ball last night, and was really struggling.but lol.after waking up this morning but I think the initial point was to pull my leg (strange introduction? or too advanced.). I kept recalling words back and forth in transit though I suppose though (to learn)!

I noticed there was an argument later with a few deep from my posts about 'reading' v.s. 'watching.'

I'm pretty sure children learn a language by reading. That's how I learned my native language well, by reading and going through grammar exercises in school.

I also understand that some people really learn through watching and I think that's ok too. But it's not for me currently. I find it way too stressful!!! Reading is really relaxing and gentle, and no I don't go back and forth like a drug addled zombie pacified masticatingly endlessly on words I don't know. I'm not retarded, I am cognizant and have working memory and everything doesn't have to be at once. Imo, reading increases fluid and solidity of intelligence for vocab and grammar- and it really does in my case, in a fun, easy way, that I don't have to stress (out) about.

These are really subjective differences, and everyone is not a teacher of language. There is something right for everyone. I don't know why there is narrow minded elitism with incorrect bickering, in a culture trying to expand mental horizons by learning at their own pace, about a foreign way of life and meaning, and individual state-form that intends peace and effort like Zen for example requiring so much dedication and politeness to be factually issued in order to speak without completely crossing boundaries which blur the line between Dumas and petty. It seems we are talking really about pressure, critical feedback to something that doesn't exist (a contrary egotistical stance), or is looking for help.
In the case of weeabooism, we do see an elitist ego out of control. I trust you are aware. The superego is distorting it's descendants expression, the poor souls. That is why they are projecting (mommy & daddy). These are definitely something that can be fixed with reading manga, I think, the learning and training the mind at a matured, non-infantile stage, birthing and depending on another language, for instance. You're correct. Without mnemonics or a similar method of Kanji analysis eventually you hit a roadblock. The alternative is learning to write but that's even more time intensive and you can't properly use it unless you are a schoolkid in japan or a salary man. Despite the shit that RTK gets, it's able to condense into 3ish months what it takes Japanese kids years to do. If you're serious about the language, mnemonics save you a shitton of time when it comes down to kanji recognition.

Back when I was around 11 or so, I decided I needed to learn Japanese after months of being interested in Japanese culture and history. I started off small, with my only prior knowledge of Japanese coming from anime and manga, simple phrases like “かわいい”, “おはようございます”, and “わかりません”. I got a Japanese tutor, had a binder full of Japanese kids’ worksheets, and learned a got handful of things. I don’t think it was ever enough to stick though. Regardless, my tutor moved to Japan and couldn’t continue lessons, so I gave up. Fast forward to 18 ish, i decide to pick it back up one day with duolingo. I make myself learn all the hiragana using Flashcards, some new phrases and such, and then I lose my spark before I master katakana. School is about to pick up again, and i see it as the perfect time to start self learning again, since I already know basic phrases, all hiragana, and about half my katakana.

My real question is, is 18 too old to start learning? Could I realistically be fluent or semi-fluent before I graduate?

(As well as that, any tips on how to most efficiently study besides duolingo?)
