Disregard SHIT advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・tmw/The moe way. Patreon scam run by a turkish tranny.
・any rentry.org and геddiт """guides""". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, confusing for beginners.
・Anime cards (the guide by someone named QM). It recommends words cards, which are proven to be less effective than targeted sentence cards (TSCs).
・Core 2.3k. It is based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Ankidrone Starter Pack instead.
・Anacreon. Anacreon is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
・Discord servers. Discord is malware that runs a data mining operation. DJT has moved to Matrix.
・Refold, Migaku and other money grab schemes.
・Visual novels. Experienced learners say they're trash because of unnatural speech and useless vocabulary. Most VNs are proprietary ー https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/

Tatsumoto is the best guide. Be sure to read his religion/story.

Because my issue isn't that あs can turn into お-like sounds. I already know that can happen. My issue is I heard a sound (an あ that soundwise shifted towards お, but isn't actually an お sound; it's just similar), and my brain incorrectly associates the sound with お instead of あ. It isn't an あ that actually became the same as お. It is an あ that became お-like and I automatically interpreted that お-like あ as an お - to the point that I had to relisten to the audio multiple times to actually hear that it isn't actually an お, rather it was a sound somewhat between あ and お, which then explains why I was having the issue.
So not only were you describing a different thing, even if you were describing the correct thing, it doesn't help me whatsover, because me knowing the change can happen doesn't help me learn to discern the the pseudo-お sound is actually an お or an あ. Plus as mentioned, the random ad hominem that isn't even relevant since you didn't understand the issue.

But that concept doesn't help me. In English, in your example, the sound that the "a" in pasta turns into is not only o-like, but it considered by English speakers as being an "o" sound (It's like Americans hearing a British person say "water". But right now, I do, because when I don't think about it, the sound that was made sounded just like お. I didn't even consider it could be an あ unlike the anon said what the word was, and even after knowing what the word was, I tried to hear it correctly as the word, but I could not, so I was trying to figure out why (since there have been cases where I have misheard something, someone corrected me, and then after a re-listen, I could hear it - but it wasn't happening this time). After listening to it again more and even slowing down the audio, I figured out what the issue was: The あ was pronounced using an allophone that I was interpreting as お. And since I know what the issue is, now I can be aware that if I ever hear that allophone (assuming I am able to discern it), it is a あ.

On the other hand, you saying essentially "あs can sound like おs sometimes" doesn't have any usage in helping me fix my mistake. If I were to hear that sound again, without having any awareness that the sound existed, my brain would just autocorrect it to お and I would never know that actually I should try to train myself to interpret it as あ instead. If I took your approach, I would run into a word that seems like it has an お in it again. It would just sound like an お every time, without me even noticing I misheard anything, because I would have never even known I needed to train myself to treat the sound as a あ.

This seems like a pretty inefficient system to me. Learning to write words will teach you to write words, but it won't teach you all the different shades of meaning of a kanji (unless you practice writing a bunch of different words containing it), nor will it directly help you distinguish between similar kanji. It's true like that guide says that English keywords won't convey the nuance of a kanji's meaning, but if you learn the basic keyword then you'll understand the "gist" when you see it in a word, then the nuance will come intuitively as you see it in more words.

I did KKLC, skipping all the readings and vocab (which I'm already familiar with from actual vocab study) and just learning to recognize and recall the kanji. I think it works great, provided you've already done a good amount of vocab. I haven't tried RTK but from what I've seen, KKLC is a bit more systematic and technical than RTK and focuses on visualizing distinct images in the kanji rather than learning hokey mnemonic phrases.

A "true Japanese" method might involve a more formal study of component graphemes, but I would say KKLC is closer to that than either of the other aforementioned methods

Are there Japanese that pronounce お like that? Because from my understanding, the sound the person was pronouncing the first vowel of 相方 with is not a sound that お can ever have. It is お-like, but not actually overlapping with a sound that お can be pronounced with, hence why it is possible to train yourself to know that every time that お-like sound is made, it is 100% no question a あ - contrast with hypothetical scenario where the sound change is so drastic, there is actual overlap and the word あいかた actually is indistinguishable from おいかた.

I also looked into what are the "official sources" for kanji etymology and the 2 biggest authorities are 藤堂 and 白川.
白川 has a lot of bias towards making everything related to rituals and bones and esoteric shit that lots of academics dispute, but sometimes his explanations are the only ones available, making it kinda sketchy as a learning material.

I already allude to the notion that vowels can have a range of phonetic realizations (allophones) and that sometimes the realizations of two vowel ranges can overlap. The existence of that possibly doesn't automatically mean お and あ have an overlapping range, or more relevantly, that the specific sound she made is one of those overlapping sounds. Because that is the thing here.

As far as I am currently aware, the sound she made is an allophone of あ, but not of お (although I in my inexperience considered it a お). I might be mistaken on that front, but I would need to hear audio of someone pronouncing a word that has an actual お in it with the same vowel.

Actually, at least in American English, those are pronounced with an /ɑ/, the same vowel as in "father", so those words literally do have a standard "a" (あ) sound in them - It's not an intermediate sound at all; although obviously based on the spelling, they historically had an o sound and that sound changed into an a (not sure about the words with "aw" in the spelling though).

i’m someone who is interested in being a literary translator (have translated short poems and stories here and there) all the translators i know have taken the jlpt and i wasn’t sure whether i should take the jump to take it. Unironically, the RTK story method is the best way to memorize individual kanji (not writing, merely memorizing components and making up pictures). The alternative would be learning to write which of course, is more time intensive and you can't properly put it into practice if you don't live and work in Japan. If you make a memorable picture and know the components, you can recall the meaning in 2-3 times compared to the 10 or so without meaning (some Kanji take even longer up into the tens of repetitons).
