It does indeed have rose gardens, although I visited around winter Comiket, so not even Beatrice could bring any of their blooms back!

Telecom Center, on Daiba island some ways away from Tokyo Big Sight where Comiket is held. I love skybridges between buildings, and this is that on steroids.

It also has a great "fountain" right in front of it; huge round shallow pool gently pushing out water, that spills over the edge (which you can walk under) in a nice little waterfall.

Heed my advice all misguided creatures who wish to visit the Promised Land:
Do not go. Whatever you do, you must not visit that land.

If you do, you will forfeit your soul and condemn the rest of miserable existence on this world to be one of extreme longing and suffering. You will always feel like you are missing something that is irreplaceable. Visiting Japan is like flying too close to the sun. You will cry on the shinkansen to the airport, you will cry on the flight back. You will live the rest of your days knowing that you will never be Japanese. You will pass the event horizon and there will be no saving you then.
You may already feel like this, but once you get there you will understand.

If I could go back to the day I bought those miserable tickets.... I would do it all over again. And again, and again, and again, and again.

Don't do it. You have been warned.

If I decide to depart the path towards the promised land, what will become of me...?

All that Japan gives, it keeps in return. Your heart will remain there, among the bamboo forests, among the gentle waves of the sea, among the cicadas and quiet shrines, forever.
But maybe that's not such a bad thing.

I lived in Japan for a few months, working an internship at NEC. By the time my internship ended, my culture shock was in full force and I fucking hated Japan.

Then I returned home and was hit even harder. I don't know how many times I just openly shouted "why are there so many goddamn fat white people here?" It's been almost a decade and I still find myself shocked at how fucking dirty every gas station and grocery store is here. How distracted all service workers in the US are. The disorder and smell of conventions like PAX and ECC.

I used to dream, often, of walking through alleyways in denden town, discovering surprisingly lively hole-in-the-wall bars, shady electronics shops, and randomly stumbling into huge collections of porn on the upper floors of otherwise completely normal stores. Now, I even miss these dreams.

This anon is exaggerating... but they're not wrong. I'm sitting here in my office, surrounded by manga and light novels. Browsing /jp/ and thinking of playing some Steins;Gate tonight. I retired off a successful career and I have a great wife and family. But, fucking hell, this thread has got me considering just flying to Japan and living in hotels in either Osaka or Tokyo until I run out of money. Just like last time, I'd probably come to hate being a foreigner after a while (I'm very tall with red hair - there's no blending in for me) but...

I don't think that Japan causes this feeling, but it binds it to a specific location. We all have things we'll never have or never be able to do. Somehow, Japan embodies this for people who can never fit in there. I won't live forever, I'll never travel to space, and I'll never be able to just live in Japan.

Thank you for reading my blog.

Shell is relatively uncommon in Japan, but it's around. You can tell it's Japan because it's an overgrown mess.

No. Hierarchical society is fine, the problem with confucianism is that it is designed to keep those in power in power forever, no matter what they do, rather than to crystalize society in an ideal form. There is a difference between deference to those in power and blind subservience to anyone above you. Also that face is inherently dishonest.

Get a single creative hobby; body building, wood working, painting, writing, etc. The reason you feel hollow is because all of your hobbies are consumptive which rely upon new and different experiences which are effectively finite. Consumptive and experiential based hobbies are the most enjoyable, but their dosage must be controlled. Spending time in the forest is nice, but if you spend every weekend in the forest your enjoyment and appreciation of it will be dulled. Seeking new and interesting things is inherent to humanity, but until the sub-humans are purged from this planet and replaced with humans, there will never be enough new things to experience for an entire lifetime; that is where creative hobbies come in.

Three quarters of the land is inhabited by sub-humans with absolutely worthless cultures and who actively drag humanity down. The cultural output of humanity would be quadrupled if those sub-humans were replaced with people. They've had thousands of years to develop cultures worth anything and have failed to do so, so it is time for actual humans to occupy those lands to try to create unique cultures actually worth something. Instead of humanity being limited to America, Japan, Northern Europe, and Korea, you would have the entire globe be occupied by humans producing scientific and cultural works; you would have a golden age.

I'm not gonna lie, something like this happened to me. I went to Japan in 2020 for about ten days. I felt sad to see it go by once I was all done, as if there was so much still left for me to explore. Even now, I have dreams where I'm back in a somewhat exaggerated version of Japan, searching for something. For some reason, the battleship Mikasa comes up a decent amount in these dreams. No not really.
There are a number of shrines the further you go up Fushimi Inari mountain (inariyama) but it’s not necessarily holier. They have slightly different gods. The shrine at the top is probably the most impressive.
Basically a lot of the Tori make money for the shrine by being sponsored by companies. But it is a really spiritual place.

Fucking delusional weebs. This is cringe.
You say all this shit, yet japanese people are not happier than people in america, or denmark, or australia, or mexico. Most likely they are less happy.
If living in japan doesn't make you happy, what is it that you dream of? Walking around and seeing cool looking architecture and cherry blossom trees and polite, identical-looking masses of little asian people?
I dated a japanese girl in college, she thought nothing of japan, knew nothing about its history, thought the coolest thing ever would be to live in LA and be like an American TV show. Her circle of other japanese international student friends was the same. They all wanted to get jobs in the US or Europe if they could. Most didn't because their english wasn't good enough, so back to nihon they went.
I went to japan, it was cool, I want to visit again. I don't want to be japanese lmao. Stop weebing
Living in japan as a westerner could be cool. Only for a western company/US govt/etc. though, entry level salarymen make literal US fast food wages

Whether or not they wisen up or not, isn't our business. Go crawl back to Gaijinpot if you need your "West is best" expat fix.

the shitiness of the US doesn't compare to the bad things in Japan, and I would gladly trade up wagie life here in the states if it means I get to live in a vastly safer country. I'd rather work insane hours (something I've done before) than worry that one day some crazy fucker will shoot my ass randomly. I hate this country so fucking much.
it's a matter of different values. Japanese grow up accustomed to life in Japan--they take it for granted and think it's the norm, and so they look towards other countries to spice their lives, and they'll love it--till some crazy shit happens that makes them think twice about living in a western shithole. the values and culture that is present in Japan is something I don't take for granted because it has things that are not present and are sorely needed here in the west.
