I went for coffee and cake with a Japanese girl yesterday and had a lot of fun, conversation was great, we talked for about 2 hours. After getting home, I texted her in Japanese thank you and it was fun (I didn't use keigo, just casual)... and she replied within a minute "こちらこそありがとうございました"

does her using keigo replying after I didn't use keigo mean I have no further chance?

Fuck I wish I started using Genki books earlier. Grinding the exercises is such a painless way to learn grammar compared to tae kim or whatever boring ass youtube videos you all keep suggesting.

I also finally teached myself how to write kana by hand. Took like an hour or so and studying just became so much comfier.

When did you guys decided to start learning Japanese?
Personally after watching a ton of ENG subbed anime and consuming JP media on the regular I felt frustrated spending so much time on this hobby and not knowing the language

I have been thinking this, but she actually wasn't all that shy in conversation, respectful for sure, the "covering her mouth" thing when eating, she looked embarrassed when I naively asked a question about a phrase with "cuso" in it, etc... but overall she was conversational and attentive

It's hard to relate to the keigo concepts as a foreigner in this kind of thing, to me it felt like having a girl that you are wanting to date calling you "sir" in the west (I hate when that happens)

There was a LN I wanted to read, and no one was translating it.
This was years ago; since then, that novel has been translated, and back then my motivation faded.
Then one day I picked up the official translation of Kumo desu ga LN, and as someone who grew up reading fan translations on bakatsuki, the official western translations was just abominable to read, so I decided to *actually* learn japanese to never have to bother with official translations ever again.

I was an EOP too once, but after passively consuming enough otaku media you start to understand extremely basic stuff like "thanks", "good morning" or "goodbye".
Once I was playing a jrpg, there was a line I understood well without the subtitles, but the translation didn't match with the voice.
So I was like "hold up, that's not what it says", and the first time I blamed it on a translation error, it happens.
Then it kept happening and I ended up deciding "fuck this, what the fuck is going on?" and decided to dig deeper.
Eventually found out the translation scene is a fucking shitshow even at the so called "professional" level and went full turbo autism to learn.
After a while I went back to reading to see how much I actually learned, and ended surprised at how much depth "pandering low effort shit for weebs" turned out to have.
You would think translations so bad that it's pretty much a completely different (and worse) story that happens to share character names and basic plot points are rare, not at all, that's the average translation.
