It's perhaps more realistic, but does it really make for a good story? Overall the biggest issue with Shirou/Rin as it exists in the VN is that it feels that it doesn't really have a proper conclusion IMO. Don't get me wrong, Archer's farewell and the classroom scene are pure kino, but it doesn't feel like enough, given how by the end the two aren't fully comfortable with another as the people who like them together want to see them (hence why the anime timeskip was so good). What is your attraction to the Fate/sty knight visual novels?
It was my first real VN and was impressed by how much I enjoyed the presentation. With the name "visual novel" I was expecting long lines of text. I thought the story was fun and how finishing one story opened another was a fun thing to discover.

Really her biggest problem is that she isn't even a character in any real sense until the final third of the VN. The reader gets practically zero opportunity to grow fond of her or even know her in any sense, so asking you to care about Sakura like Shirou does, or at least empathize with his devotion towards her is asking way too much of the reader. The other heroines have plenty of emotional baggage too, but they actually exist outside their routes as well.

I don't know, I always found this is a very weak reason. It seems her "problem" is that many fans used to (and still to this day) think of Fate as a servants story, they are the main attraction to it and how it is being marketed, at least by looking at Type Moon works since FSN. The more a character has a connection to servants, the more people will get invested in it. And Sakura doesn't have that, she only has a couple of lines with her servant in HF and doesn't do much HGW-related stuff, her route is even the route with almost no fights at all until the end.
Sakura is really fine in the VN, it's people perception what is muddled. Not many people come to FSN with interest in a victim character like her.
Also because I don't want to poke the wrong ideas, I don't mean that other anon or /tmg/ posters, I mean her reception in general.

I've always read this idea and I have never found myself agreeing with it. Saber doesn't get any prior development before she's thrust into the role of a love interest for Shirou and succeeds at being a compelling one for most. Fate also barely does anything to explore Rin's character. Everything about her trying to suppress her emotions in order to live up to the magus ideal, her hedonistic streak, the insecurities and vulnerabilities she's trying to hide, etc. all come up first in UBW and a lot of her character traits explored there don't even come up in HF. The problem isn't how Sakura is handled in Fate and UBW, but how she is handled in HF herself.

Fundamentally, at the core of how Sakura is handled there is a good idea with good themes. Shirou's attraction toward her revolves in the early stages of HF of his slowly becoming more cognizant of just how much of a fixture in his life she has become. All of Day 6 is about Shirou having to confront the fact that no matter how much he would like to deny it she does indeed matter to him. It all culminates in his commenting on how he would've gone insane had she really decided to ignore him as she had wanted. It reveals that Shirou still sought and desired human connection as any other person but he nonetheless wanted to deny that very humanity. The events of HF are all about Shirou being suddenly forced to confront that humanity and seeing him break (or reconstitute himself) from the pressure. It's an interesting arc because UBW is all about Shirou becoming human thanks to the heroine as well. But in UBW, he and Rin manage to resolve Shirou's issues gradually, whereas HF brings them out at the forefront immediately. It doesn't give Shirou time to rest and really consider things. He is immediately forced with an extremely difficult dilemma. Shirou refusing to be cognizant of Sakura in the first two routes is deliberately.

Plus, the way Shirou suppresses his feelings for Sakura is similar to the way he does for Rin. When we first see her from his point of view, the first thing he says is that she has many admirers and then with some hesitation that he is one of them. This is his seeking to equate how he feels about her to how the average boy in his school does but later events reveal that her feelings for her had in fact always gone deeper than that. Like when he talks about how he wouldn't know what to believe if Rin ever gave up in the Fate route or how it's revealed Archer (who never fell in love with her) was always encouraged by example. Shirou may not be in love with either Rin or Sakura at the start, but his feelings for them aren't just a crush, they go deeper than that. But this aspect of Shirou can only be properly explored through Sakura since Shirou interacts with Rin so much in Fate and UBW that we get to see him gradually reveal his feelings on her, so it becomes difficult to separate Shirou growing fond of her over time from his admitting feelings he has always felt like with Sakura.

The real issue is that HF has too many subplots and the romance doesn't have time to breathe or get properly developed. Plus Rin vs Sakura, Illya and Kirei are all more compelling storylines.

Sakura is meant to be a subversion to the reader as she's portrayed as your generic kouhai that is in the normal side of Fate and isn't involved in the grail war so you can dismiss her after the grail war starts even though there are clear signs of abuse early on. It's the dark shadow that is kept hidden from the reader and only revealed in HF since it's the route where all of the truths and dark shadows are revealed to the reader. That's really gay and I've never understood this mindset. You can dislike the Rin/Shirou romance all you want (even if your taste is shit) but there is always a romantic undercurrent to all of Rin and Shirou's interactions. HF constantly lambshades the unconsumated nature of their feelings for one another. Their dynamic and personal relations are fundamentally romantic, which is why their relationship in Fate and HF lacks much depth if you don't bring in the fact that the two can and do in certain timelines become a pair, like how her being okay with his entering a romantic relationship with either Saber or Sakura despite the depth of her own feelings for him sheds light on just how selfless the supposed selfish magus Rin is, or how Shirou still can't help but gush over Rin even when he doesn't fall for her. It’s mainly due to Rin being an independent kind of character that live her life without Shirou and be fine with it. Her romantic moments with Shirou just aren’t as strong as the others and don’t have the same weight as Saber’s or drama like Sakura’s. It’s a normal and fine romance, but it’s not that engaging for me. That’s not to discredit her character as she’s good and I find it more interesting to see her being fine with and even supporting Shirou as a wingman in Saber’s route. You don’t see that often and with no drama at all about it. It shows how mature Rin is and how much of a good friend she is to Shirou. They can work well as a mentor and student without romance since they’re characters with depth that don’t only have to rely on romance. I also feel that the UBW route is more of the Archer route then anything else so there isn’t much focus on their romance which makes it the weakest to me.

I know people like to hate on Ciel and all that, but if you really think about it, she's not a bad person. Ciel is the perfect combination between a lover and a good friend for Shiki.

In the VN, Ciel is consistently the only character that is shown to be competent, assured, and benign. She is consistently the only character Shiki can trust. She is, consistently, the only character that knows what she's doing, and is willing to help Shiki. When Shiki is babbling around like the retard he so often is in the VN, Ciel is always here to reassure him, help him get back on his feet, and is just a great human bean in general.

Ciel was a secretive mask-upon-mask character and becomes unpredictable because of how often she switches between them even though Ciel acts completely independent from Shiki and the rest of Tsukihime's plot. The umbrella scene where Ciel finds Shiki in the rain and he has nowhere to go, so she takes him to her apartment and help him get back to his regular self. That scene is also triggered by having Shiki face reality instead of denying that it happened and having him believe that it was just a dream.

Ciel was cool as hell, with Ciel running up the wall and attacking from the fucking CEILING and Shiki can’t help but be honest and think of it as “charmingly beautiful”.

Ciel doesn't fit into a shallow archetype, her personalty and actions are strongly motivated, the pacing of her arc was great, the true ending landed the bittersweet vibe.

Ciel definitely had the best chemistry with Shiki out of all the other girls. Shiki and Ciel are literally like a married couple from the very start of the VN.

Now ufo just needs a passionate Ciel fan to be as good as Sudou and make the Tsukihime anime, and we might clear the stigma around her as well.

Yeah. It's funny how Shiki/Ciel used to be my least favorite pairing in the old Tsukihime, but after reading the remake they became one of my favorite Type-Moon pairings alongside Shirou/Rin and Shirou/Saber. Dunno man different strokes for different people and all but UBW is the most consistently romantic route of the three throughout. Whereas Fate has the romance only kick off toward the end and really get going with the date and the bridge scene, and in HF the romance has to compete with space with all sorts of other storylines (which can be a problem if you find the other stuff way more interesting), the romantic development in UBW is spread evenly throughout. It does an excellent job of peeling back the layers of both Shirou and Rin thanks to their mutual interactions. Bloodfort in UBW is excellent because up to that point Rin had been the ultracompetent mage prodigy and Shirou the dunce who is lost without everyone else's help. Bloodfort suddenly has Rin acting out of sorts as Shirou keeps his cool, revealing something about both characters, simultaneously showing Rin's vulnerabilities and Shirou's trauma while deepening their bond. Then there's kino like Shirou's defect. It's fine if you prefer the Archer stuff over the romantic stuff (even though you can't separate the two, they're deeply intertwined) but to say UBW doesn't focus on the romance is just dumb to me. I think Sakura's romance is fucking dogshit but I always try to judge it objectively. When people say they prefer the two as friends, it just makes me think they didn't pay attention or want to get because it doesn't suit their taste. Whether you like the romance or not, the depth is still there.

It (Normal End) was the only conclusion considered at the time. However, after writing about 2/3 of it, I found that the story itself did not allow such a conclusion. After that, I wrote the original conclusion, and then followed the story and write the happy end. Since this was Shirou's tale of happiness after losing so much, even if Saber and Illya were lost, at least he should let Sakura achieve happiness. And this was the conclusion. Even though Sakura indirectly became a mass murderer, there was no reason to deny her of happiness. I came up with this idea that if one were alive, it was not bad to redeem him/herself while looking forward to happiness. Even though this was hypocrisy, I felt that the story itself strongly demanded this possibility. To be honest, it was the first time that I lost to the story I wrote.

Sakura also can't be rescued because of the situation she is in. It took an extraordinary set of circumstances for her to be rescued in HF, including her being able to regenerate her own heart after blowing a hole through it. Those circumstances just can't happen in any other route. Nasu kept the other characters ignorant of her circumstances for that reason. Sakura can only be happy in her own route, and not even then if she's left alone without her senpai.

As for her possibly coming into a happy ending, you have to accept that it's impossible in Fate and UBW. You can ignore it, you can seethe about it and make yourself believe that she deserves it, but there's a point to the story being written like that. There are costs to being a Hero of Justice. Saving one person means not saving another. This is the lesson that Kiritsugu failed to teach Shirou, and a main reason this story is not just another generic battle shounen with a generic "I want to save everyone and I will succeed because I'm the protagonist" protagonist like UBW.

You need to stop using this as an excuse. It’s not the bait that causes people to hate the switch, it’s the fact that the switch happens over a character who is practically a stranger due to her not being involved. I can promise you, if the switch happened over say Illya, then the controversy would be far less prevalent, she people know and probably are attached in some capacity to her.

HF was written in such a way that Nasu wanted players to stick to beliefs, if that means supporting the idea of a hero (after we just played a route where it’s not only possible to become one, but actually be a successful one with the right support) then that works as well. After seeing that interview where Nasu wants you to stick to your belief set, you realize the bait was never bait at all, but rather a real path that could lead to our protagonist not only fulfilling his dreams, but finding happiness too. A hero of justice is not a fabrication in the world of fate, it’s something that can be achieved, albeit at a cost (which Shirou realizes in UBW)

You’re correct about not being able to save everyone, but people choosing others over Sakura isn’t wrong, nor should it be looked down upon. In fact, due to how late in the game she’s presented, people actually just reinforced their opinions on the other two routes, and chose them over Heavens Feel when it came to preference.

There’s is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing Fate or UBW as the desired path. They weren’t ever bait in the first place, especially considering how Shirou ends up in them.

People generally disliked HF due to its manipulative guilt trip nature, where it became obviously apparent that Nasu wanted you to feel great sympathy for a character you haven’t got the chance to get attached too. It tried to force you, the reader, to become attached to someone you don’t know, then choose that person over everything else. It was an extremely poor writing choice.

The main takeaway is that you shouldn’t discredit the other two routes as bait, not when they’re valid and give Shirou solid answers. And if that means Sakura is fucked, then so be it, some people would choose to save others over her, and that’s something you’ll have to accept.

I love the romance in Fate but not much of anything else. I love everything in HF but dislike the romance. UBW is the complete package for me. The romance is great and ties perfectly with Shirou's conflict with Archer, the stuff with Medea provides a perfect plot structure in which Shirou, Rin and Archer's arcs to occur in, etc.

But I will absolutely concede that its plot has weaknesses, Assasin getting offscreened, Gil coming out of nowhere (there was *one* mention to the 4th war's Archer, and that was his only presence outside the prologue), since in the other routes, we at least already know he is there. Archer being kind of unresolved, Kirei not having as much development, Illiya not having a very propper conclusion, and it can go on.

Honestly, I rather like that part of the story.
I don't think the romance would be as good if they simply hit it off perfectly. That beginning tension highlights their personalities, teaches us how they both think, feel and act and how that puts them at odds, and how they overcome it and begin to trust and relate to each other.

Having that period of learning is essencial, and is what makes them so special to me. But I suppose it might be a dealbreaker for people who don't look for that in a romance.

I could understand Arc having some feelings for Ciel for similar reasons to Shiki, they already cheese that up decently often in official stuff even a bit in the remake and Lumina at times, but I can't really see Ciel having anything romantic for Arc. The problem IMO with Fate is that the structure of the romance is a very poor fit for the content of the rest of the route. Shirou's romance with Saber is odd in the sense that up until the fight with Berserker it is really, really slow paced until it suddenly ramps up and doesn't let go. It honestly probably gets as much development in the bridge scene, the fight with Gilgamesh and the basement scene combined than everything else preceding. To note, I don't think this is a bad thing in and of itself. In the hands of a less competent writer it would probably suck but Nasu really handles it well. It's just that the early Fate route is left with this massive vacuum where there is nothing to compensate for the lack of goings on in the Saber/Shirou romance. In fact the route wastes our time with side characters that don't really matter. The Fate route suffers because it was frontloaded with stuff that was important for the other routes so we spend way too much time with Rin and Illya who are completely irrelevant to what the route is actually about -- Saber and Shirou. So we have too much exposition, too much SoL hijincks, too much time spent with side characters that don't matter, etc. The way the romance is structured, it perhaps would've been better had it been employed in a route where there's more stuff happening at the start to keep the audience engaged until the real fun starts. On the other hand? That might've distracted from the romance so it's perhaps not the best fit either.

In comparison, UBW trims down the fat rather immediately. The cast is virtually narrowed down to just Rin and Shirou. Their relationship is zeroed in and Archer is established as foil to them and Shirou specifically. The plot with Medea doesn't feel like something that exists apart from Shirou's arc, primarily defined by his romance with Rin and his conflict with Archer, but as something that helps drive it forward in a more concise and engaging fashion than the way the plot stuff is handled in Fate. Don't get me wrong, Shinji and Rider do lead to Shirou being forced to admit he needs Saber's help and later the reveal of Saber's identity but I feel like it could've been even more concise. In HF the side characters matter and the side plots help move the central plot over Shirou abandoning his ideal forward so they are more thoroughly developed. We spend a lot of time with Rin and Illya but they actually matter so they are proper characters with relevance to Shirou's character development and also Sakura's story. They aren't just there for the sake of establishing them for later routes.

Yeah but the focus on them is nowhere near as big as it is in the early portions of the Fate route. What's important is that they are there but they aren't distracting like in Fate, where we spend so much time on dumb conversations between Taiga, Rin and Sakura, including ones where Rin teases Sakura about her boobs (...what?). I'm still kinda baffled how much time we spend on Day 4(?) at the school just seeing Shinji, Rin and Sakura interact with Shirou in a route where none of them get properly fleshed out. In UBW by contrast, the side characters feel utilized just enough to establish Shirou's home life and also the extent to which he and Rin are distant from another in the early stages of the route but they get phased out right around when they aren't all that needed anymore. I like how Taiga is used when Rin comes over to Shirou's to strategize and later sleep. It's a case where she is used to add oil to the flame of Rin and Shirou's banter. Taiga getting Shirou to act all tsun about Rin is cute. In Fate however the side antics just distract from the real meat and potatoes that is the Shirou/Saber relationship. I don't wish to exclude the side characters completely by any means. I think it's nice the way Shirou's banter with them is used to point out Saber is only happy when Shirou is happy. It's just the balance is completely off.

I think it does make him a foil to both simply by the fact that Rin loves Shirou but even without that Shirou and Archer are placed in the role of angel and devil on Rin's shoulder (kind of) in the early portions of the route, with the former encouraging her human side and the latter her magus side. Plus, it is by seeing Archer's past and seeing how it reflects Shirou's present that Rin gets more in tune with the latter's problems. Ironically, though Archer seems to be trying to push Rin away from Shirou, he ends up doing the opposite. Though I would argue that his giving the pendant to Rin actually seems to indicate that his blessing of their relationship at the end was reflective of his "shipping" them together from the very start and that he gave Rin the pendant to get her to realize who he is, therefore allowing her to help Shirou out.

About the focus on side characters... eh, its complicated.
Like you said, Fate route suffers from being an introductory route. It needs to set up the lore and the world and the characters from the ground up.
Because of that, characters like Rin have a great presence, despite not being very important to the happenings, or having major developments.

However, I will defend on Taiga being useful on Shirou/Saber as well. Moments like Saber beating her on a sword fight, or, more importantly, the moment Taiga gives saber a plush toy, serve greatly to show us more of Saber and Shirou, and are interesting and refreshing scenes.
While I will admit that a lot of characters don't have meaning in that route, the character interactions paint a good image of Shirou's day to day life and are important for painting a picture of the characters.

I definitely agree those Taiga moments are great. I will say that I think Taiga is better utilized and a more compatible character with Shirou and Saber than the others. Far more than Sakura for instance, who really, really overstays her welcome. If I had to sum up my feelings on the SoL stuff in Fate route, it's that it's too much a good thing. Overall I'd like to note that I definitely do not want to see it rewritten. FSN is one interconnected whole and rewrites to the Fate route would also require rewrites to UBW and HF and I'd rather not see that.

I think Shiki/Ciel is such a good pairing is also because of how realistic it is. I've never really met some out of this world Arcueid type or had any kind of maids to serve me but I've had people play similar roles to Akiha and Ciel in my life. It actually has quite a bit of development early on, it's just a lot more subtle. Thing's like Saber and Shirou's early training, Saber becoming accustomed to being part of "the family" etc all take place early on. In fact, the one major thing I praise the Fate Route for is its consistency with the romance. There's very rarely a scene with the two characters that doesn't have romantic implications, even early on, it's just that later on in the route, the romance is far more obvious. I can say that it feels like it goes through intensive development as soon Saber meets assassin.

This is an interesting take, and one I disagree with. Rin and Illya take up virtually no time in the grand scheme of things when compared with the main focus- Saber and Shirou. More often than not, Illya or Rin stop by for a quick exposition dump, then vanish for a solid 2 hours. In fact, side characters are barely present in this route. One of the big complaints is that it just focuses on Shirou and Saber and that's it. You're the first person I've spoken to who thinks the side characters are too distracting. More often than not, I hear that side characters should have played a bigger role in the route, since all the route actually does is focus on Saber and Shirou.

I think your take is interesting, but I do disagree with a lot of it.
