Ohayou I've been learning Japanese recently because I was bored and I think I'm doing okay so far. I'm using Duolingo and am up to the bit where you talk about family but it introduces using pronouns like kanojo and kane no, shit like that. Kanji is pretty messed up though, it feels like a lot of seemingly arbitrary moonrunes to memorise. To remember them I try and make up something silly in my head, like the kanji for neko looks like the right hand symbol is a cat with antlers, or the right hand symbol in imouto has a kawaii dress, but then in ane the dress is skewed because she's older because she just is okay.

I have the basics from Duolingo but it's not holding my interest anymore. I want to try the method of watching media with matching dub and subtitles as mentioned here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_EQDtpYSNM).). I'm lazy and according to this video it's actually the best way to learn in any case.

A few notes on Anki: It's a lot better if you make sure to do your reviews every day. Skipping days can cause a big pileup. If you get too many or need to slow down on Anki, set the new cards to 0 and only do the reviews and after a few days you should only have a handful of reviews. There's also add-ons you can install that allow you to "pause" everything in case you suddenly need to stop for a bit. Also, don't just do Anki. It's not so much a "studying" tool as a way to memorize things and keep them fresh in your memory to make it easier to cement them in permanently as you do your proper studying or immersion.

As to fitting learning into your schedule. Let's say you're only able to do X amount of time of grammar study or reading a textbook or whatever it is you want to do because finals are coming up or whatever. There's tons of stuff you can do outside of reading a textbook that are helpful, and arguably necessary (you gotta get some immersion in at some point). Take those little unused chunks of your day and fill them with things to do in Japanese. Listen to a podcast while walking/driving to school. Read a manga on your phone while waiting for class to start. Play a kanji learning app or something while sitting on the toilet. Instead of watching cute cat videos on Youtube while you unwind, and instead watch cute cat videos on Youtube in Japanese.

I'd be sure to look at different tools and resources that cut out busy work and save time, especially around Anki. A few notable examples:

Migaku - $5/month, $200/lifetime subscription. It allows you to open webpages and watch streaming video (only Youtube and Netflix right now) and video files and quickly look up words you come across as well as automatically create Anki cards from that content. Only Chrome is currently supported.

Yomichan - A browser extension that allows you to hold shift or control and hover words to pop up a dictionary entry. Supports any dictionary files you can find. It also is able to connect to a bunch of different programs and plug-ins that let you do stuff like create Anki cards. Here's one site that show you how to set it up. Here's another one.

AnimeCards script - This is a script that works with the MPV player and Yomichan to let you automatically create Anki cards, much like Migaku, except free. I find Migaku more convenient and fast to use, but I used the AnimeCards method previously and it was still great. Go to their site to learn how to set it up.

Kaku - A phone app that uses OCR to pop up dictionary entries on Android (IDK if it's on Apple, but there's probably at least a different app that's similar). It's like Yomichan but for your phone.

WaniKani - It's an online flashcard based system for learning Kanji similar to Heisig's Remembering the Kanji or KKLC. Some people like it, some don't, but if you want to do something similar to RTK or KKLC, this is a really convenient way to do it. If you don't like it and still want to do a similar type of program, Migaku has an Anki add-on that let's you build your own RTK type of deal.

Should I even bother learning Japanese....

Ok I have to be in Japan for work for 3 years. I have no objection to trying to learn some Japanese before I go, and to continue while I am there...but is there much point? (Work will organise everything serious for me like documents etc)

I have no experience of learning another language, I only speak english (can't even speak any Spanish beyond a few phrases). I would really like to use the opportunity to learn, but if I'm honest I have no idea how to work out if it's even worth my time to seriously learn, or if I should just enjoy my time there and muddle through with some apps on my iphone and hang out exclusively with the other english speakers. I should add, I am keen to embrace the opportunity, but I'm trying to manage my expectations, because I have no idea my efforts in learning would be rewarded, or if I'd still be years and years away from having any useful skills.

I appreciate this community is naturally biased, but if you could share your thoughts I'd appreciate it!

You will enjoy living there much more if you can do basic things like order food, ask how much something is and function in general. Listening

I feel like I understand the gist of what’s being said in most of the anime that I watch, I understand what is being said when the characters are making small talk, it’s not all crystal clear but I get the gist.

I don’t understand what’s being said when the characters move outside of small talk and talk about something specific. So, if the characters are talking about a narrative motif, I usually can’t understand it and will have to go back and rewatch that part with subtitles if I really want to know what was said.

I also tried listening to podcasts in japanese but so far haven’t found it helpful at all, probably because it’s not ‘comprehensible’ input. I have found Bilingual Podcasts to be a lot more comprehensible and useful, however I only know of one really good one which is Lazy Fluency. They keep it nearly 50-50 Japanese-English.

I have another issue, which is that I would like to track the podcasts that I listen to and put them on this Log but I don’t know of any good ways to do that. I’ve used two podcast apps so far, Google Podcast and Pocket Cast. Both of them record your listening history but neither separate your listening history by the date that you listened to it. So, I’d have to do that manually, which is too much effort for me. That’s why for the most part this Log doesn’t have a record of the podcasts that I’ve listened to.

Reading

I recently read my first book in japanese and I did so without a dictionary just to see if I could finish it. I understood maybe 1-5% of the 202 pages that I read. I’m planning on rereading it with a physical dictionary in hand so that I can look up the pronunciation of the kanji that I don’t know. This might sound weird but I find it a bit uncomfortable to use an online dictionary while I’m reading a physical book. I’ve only read about 2 manga series so far, Tokyo Revengers and Manchurian Opium Squad, both of which are still ongoing. From what I remember, It did feel like I understood what was going on in Tokyo Revengers pretty well. Again, just like with watching anime, I can’t understand specifics so I’d have to look things up if I really wanted to know what was said during a certain scene.

The furigana in shonen manga is really helpful, it helps me stay immersed in the story instead of having to pull up a dictionary everytime I see a kanji that I don’t

know. Manchurian Opium Squad didn’t have furigana for the most part and was more difficult to read but I was still able to understand what was going on.

I’m happy that I started and continue to do Immersion Learning, it’s a fun and productive way to spend my time. However, I feel like my progress is a bit slow

I’ve been learning Japanese for about 2 years or so. For that entire duration I’ve found it hard to immerse myself. I’m totally ok with SRS and have previously learned all the 常用漢字.

However, whenever I watch anime or consume content in Japanese I inevitably become very uncomfortable and turn it off in favor of English speaking content. I really can’t bring myself to watch Japanese content without becoming anxious. For whatever reason I feel inadequate, ‘foreign’, and not ‘good enough to watch this yet’ even if I understand a good bit of it. I know that’s par for the course learning a language like Japanese but I’m just wondering if anybody else has experienced and overcome such things.

It's so unclear it took me fucking forever to understand that after you do the drag and drop selection, the result of the OCR is copied in your clipboard...

But now that I know, I just use the texthooker page like I would for a VN.
The only real complaints I have about poricom is that the interface is shit, and the controls leave a lot to be desired.
If I could, I'd much rather use the OCR with a better manga reader, and I know there are ways to do it, but poricom is simple enough that I'm willing to forgive its shortcomings in exchange for not having to mess around with CLI tools.
