No. Go directly to japan.
I lived there for one year and now my japanese is almost perfect. You don't need a visa for 90 days and since nobody cares about it anyway, you can just stay as long as you want. For a living you can work at a 7/11, it's not the best pay but you will be able to pay the rent, eat good and go out with friends. Don't worry about your japanese skills, because you're a gaijin, they will hire you just to make the shop look cool. You basically get paid for doing nothing.

Just go ahead, go to japan. TODAY!
