So I feel that I need to get this off my chest because it is starting to get me down and it is this:

I have lived in Japan for nearly 20 years and cannot speak Japanese.

There, I said it. If you’re interested I’ll give you my backstory. Moved to Japan about 20 years ago and did the English teaching thing for a few years. Went back to my home country to get a teaching license and now have a stable job teaching at a private school in Japan (not teaching English).
Wife is Japanese and have half Japanese kids who are more or less bilingual.

But I am incapable of holding a conversation in Japanese. I rely on my wife for everything where Japanese is required (going to the clinic, etc) unless they can communicate in English. I don’t have any Japanese friends and use exclusively English at my workplace.

I have tried to study over the years but there seems to be something holding me back form actually learning Japanese. I’m not sure if it’s a lack of confidence or just the lack of motivation to learn the language. I 100% realise that my life would be so much easier if I could speak even basic Japanese.

So there you go, I just wanted to get this off my chest. Feel free to offer advice, call me a loser, or whatever.
