The only way to learn 日本語:

1. Filter all tripfags
2. Don't waste time/money on ゴミ like:
・Garbage videos and youtube channels, shitty apps, translations, learning kanji instead of vocab, Genki, Imabi, RTK, KKLC, Wanikani, Duolingo, Bunpro, Kodansha, Tobira, whatever you're using, language schools, Italki, JLPT, Kanji Kentei tests and many other scams
・Japanese From Zero, Pimsleur, japanesepod101, Memrise, Duolingo and other blue-pilled resources.
・tmw/The moe way. Patreon scam run by a turkish tranny.
・any rentry.org and геddiт "guides". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, confusing for beginners.
・So called anime cards. Words cards are proven to be less effective than targeted sentence cards (TSCs).
・Core 2.3k and any "Core" Anki decks. They are based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Ankidrone Starter Pack instead.
・Anacreon. Anacreon is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
・Discord servers. Discord is malware that runs a data mining operation. Ask questions on Matrix.
・Refold, Migaku and other money grab schemes.
・Visual novels. Experienced learners say they're trash because of unnatural speech and useless vocabulary. Most VNs are proprietary ー https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/

Maybe I need to separate the two but after learning about the imperial Japanese and the unimaginable cruelty they inflicted on the Chinese & POW, it's kind of hard too.. How to read quickly:
* Get the drift of what is being said
>It is easier to understand what is being said if you focus on the keywords, and give due consideration to the major sentences and phrases (what happened, what kind of X is it, what is being talked about, etc.) Keywords are important words that appear repeatedly in the text. Often different words are used to say the same thing. Focusing on the keywords gives thought to the theme (what is the overall topic that is being discussed?) Chapter titles, paragraph titles, bolded and highlighted text, and imagery are examples of aids that can assist you.
* Take note of who and what are being discussed
>Consider the questions: 誰が、何が、誰に、何に、誰を、何を. Passive and causative passive, offering and receiving expressions, requests and demands. Incorrectly understanding these questions runs the risk of misunderstanding the text.
* Get used to long sentences
>Try dividing long sentences into smaller parts. This makes them easier to read. Sentences can easily be divided after words such as: ~が、~ので、~から、~と、~ば、~たら、~なら、~ても、~のに、 etc. Commas also indicated where a sentence but not necessarily must be divided. Phrases that explain a noun in more detail usually go before the noun in question. If you understand where the phrase explaining the noun begins and ends, and consider the sentence as a whole, it becomes easier to understand.
* Infer the meaning of unknown words
>Even if there are words that you do not know, you can sometimes work out the general meaning from the context. You sometimes do not know where the explanation part is. If, despite your best efforts, you cannot feel it out, ignore it and read on.
* Predict what comes next
>Anticipate what is to follow as you go along. You can get hints about what is coming from conjunctions, adverbs, and sentence-final expressions, etc.
* Take notice of demonstrative terms (ko-so-a-do)
>これ、それ、あれ、どれ、この、その、あの、どの、ここ、そこ、あそこ、どこ
>Demonstrative terms often refer to what is written in the previous sentence, but can also indicate what follows.
* Understand the text structure
>Each paragraph typically has its own function. If you understand the function of the paragraph, you can understand the relationship among the paragraphs, and the structure of the text. Find the most important thing that the writer is trying to say in each paragraph, and consider the function of the paragraph.
* Understand the mood of the author
>Pay attention to the words used by the writer to indicate their mood. Remember the words and expressions that the writer users to make positive and negative judgments.

Yeah, ubuntu is bloat but xubuntu is performance wise really good for old laptops with everything working out of the box, and being a debloated ubuntu still provides you with a very active community tied to ubuntu (the most popular distro) which is great for beginners. I like to run it on my thinkpads
Mint is also recommended often to beginners but I personally never used it much so I cannot comment on it.

I have an N4 test in July which is significantly less difficult than N1 but I still wonder whether I will pass. But even if I do happen to fail, I will take it as a sign to study harder and focus on my weakest points.
It's best to keep on improving japanese as you usually do and skim through the most important grammar points for the N1 or whichever level you are aiming for.

Yes, people here make this statement quite often, and I agree. Thing is, I wouldn't mind continuing with what I'm doing, but I get a little worried since it's hard to measure. Only thing I have is people saying it took years, others saying they went from absolute 0 to N1 in a year or even 8 months, etc.

Yep, thats about right. As far as I understand, he is trying to offer me "garage kits", that he makes, and that are unpainted and unassembled.

I am trying to tell him that I can't work with that. And that I'm much interested in the finished models I have seen for sale on his blog.

Its wildly obscene models though. Which possibly complicates the exchange since in my experience, japanese people dealing with obscene stuff are very easy to spook..

I'm fluent in speaking so I find it a lot easier to read kanji with context, since I know the word already, just not what word the kanji represents.

When I use Anki flashcards I feel it's so much harder to remember without any context so I end up just kinda being frustrated and wasting too much time on it. I feel that reading VNs is a lot easier to just do regularly without burning out

Why are there so few good anki decks? Why can't you do anki all the way to fluency? Why aren't there better grammar decks? Is it just that it requires crowdsourcing or individual efforts which are hard? I see people say "make your own anki deck, I did that". Okay, why didn't you share it?
My question is, why isn't there a golden path to fluency through anki laid out with "standard" decks that are scrutinized by everyone and open source? Is it because this is impossible, or is it just hard and nobody bothered yet and anki hasn't been around long enough?

since that method would frontload too much of the work, i just mine as i go, and if i want better context than where i find the word, i pull it from anime with immersionkit or qm's bot. if i repeatedly fail a word during my reps, i change or add to the context.

it is, especially if you're mining rare or weird words because you get little reinforcement from input, so you have to read a ridiculous amount to match your deck. qm has complained many times that he can't consume enough japanese to keep up and started suspended cards. 4bc also said maintaining is becoming an issue. ciaran is weirdly autistic and doesn't say anything, but i doubt even he has kept up since he got a job last year.

tldr, not worth it.

what always struck me as odd is that despite doing that amount of obscure cards, none of them is fluent, sans maybe ciaran, and bunko is closer to fluency than the other 2 (id consider him there but i know that triggers people so...)
i get the vibe that at some point its like doing all of rtk, just procrastination to avoid taking the next step (in this case conversation, but im the rare sort that actually plans to use japanese beyond a masturbation enhancer)
i also don't think "out japanesing the japanese" is something im interested in ("yo check out all the rare yojis i know!" sorta thing)

fluency requires conversations. if you never output then all the knowledge you are sitting on never converts into output. 4bc and qm rarely output, or maybe they do but not in the thread. obviously, the more you know the bigger the advantage you will have in leveling up your output, but that is only if you output. the input only theory doesn't work if you want to be fluent

you can feel their level, id be very surprised if bc could do anything in anything but an academic sense

Not even close. Kentei 1 has twice as many kanji, and probably 10 times as many readings as I know. I only add whichever word the kanji comes up in, so 1-2 readings for most of the kanji. I also can't write any kanji, and nevermind the 四字熟語 section. I would guess I'm 5% of the way to passing kanken 1. It would be a nice flex but I don't think I have the autism for it.
