Final Fantasy 9 was rather... boring, but it had some nice tunes, so it might be worth to spend a hundred hours to hear them all.

I havent played Grandia 2, but it might be a better idea.

Grandia 2 is good, but I think FF9 is better even just by sheer production values.
That is, if you like more traditional "fantasy-like" characters, like a happy-go-lucky Rogue, a comical Knight, emotive Black Mage, fragile Princess, etc.
Grandia 2 has a badass as protagonist, with kickass demoness and religious pure virgin as heroines, but it's a lot more animu-like.
