Well...The youkai aren't really productive in Gensokyo...you have the SDM which does nothing productive. Just some rich vampire running her own little aristocratic dream house. The oni are a bunch of fucking drunks and I don't see Nitori trying to invent tractors or shit like that to help Gensokyo.

The Lunatics provide Medical Care and really great drugs, the Crow Tengu are media moguls, Keine teaches/brainwashes the children, Reimu holds the Universe together*, and Yukari is the self-imposed Governor of Gensokyo. I think she founded it as well.
*According to previous discussions on /jp/, Reimu dying would end Gensokyo, therefore I assumed she holds the universe together. I do not actually believe this and if someone would like to clarify, please do so.

Mystia runs a food stand! Youmu is a gardener, and Sakuya is a maid. Keine is a history teacher, and Mokou is a forest guide. Marisa has a shop (though I gather it doesn't do well) and the prismriver sisters put on concerts and I suspect they get well compensated for their time.

Things humans beleive to be fantasy can not exist in reality. By creating a Fantasy World, creatures that are considered fantasy can exist. So if Reimu dies, the Border goes, if the Borders gone, Youkai die out
