39611495 No.39611495 [Reply] [Original]

I thought of something fun, /jp/. We could have a VN book club. We vote on a VN once a month or so. Then we take about week to read on our own. After that we discuss the VN for a week or two, so to allow any latecomers. Once we've wrapped up discussions, we could give it a short review and rating.
Doing this would encourage more variety with /jp/, exploring content that would otherwise be disregarded, and potentially inspire new content.
Would anyone be interested in doing this?

OK! Looks like there is some interest. I haven't actually gone through any VNs outside of Katawa Shoujo myself. I wanted to get into VNs for a bit, but discussing normally sucks.
I'm going to sleep. Feel free to make some suggestions. I'll make a strawpoll later.

typically nyaa, even if there isnt a torrent for a vn in english you can just download the jap version and patch it yourself. i would personally stay away from official translations if possible for a lot of vns due to bad localization but thats just my opinion and sometimes itll be all you can get

>> No.39611973

Make sure you set up easy to remember dates for it. Say first tuesday of every month the VN is posted and we come back on the 3rd to discuss it. Also try to discourage continuous posting in her inbetween. It should be a thread with a purpose not just another shitposting general on the board.

You don't have to finish within the week. Just preferably within the discussion period. Those that don't finish in time will just have to miss out on a bit or be spoiled.

I'm interested because I haven't read very many VNs. It'd be nice if an anon shared a DDL for those on networks that don't appreciate torrent.

>>39612302
>I really don't want this to devolve into a general. [...] Not sure what measures could be taken, but there's time to figure it out.
I think the key thing to avoid generaldom is to not keep a thread up 24/7, especially for the sake of having a thread up. Could schedule discussions to be spaced apart, like two weeks to a month. Or tie club threads to a date like the 15th of every month or every other Tuesday.

Could make a standalone thread for the chosen read. By nature of being an organized club, it's going to feel tenuously general-like. To attract those interested in the idea of a VN club you're going to need to call attention that a thread is also a VN club thread. So the subject could be like "/jp/ Reads - Steins;Gate" and the OP would contain author, premise, related links for DL and reference, and discussion prompts related to the thread's VN. This way the thread is open to both anons following the club and anons interested in the work but otherwise uncaring about club activities.

As for the rest, sounds good. We'll go for every other Wednesday 1st and 3rd.
>>39618328
That's what I was thinking as well. I'm still looking for suggestions on what we read, though I'll look for interesting VNs myself. I just don't want to choose VNs that a lot of people have already gone through.

I'll take 3 or 4 choices and put them on a strawpoll for a vote. I'll release the results on the 1st Wednesday of the month, the 4th. From there, we will discuss on the 3rd Wednesday which would be the 18th. Once discussion starts to wrap up, I'd like to do a short review sort of thing with everyone's input. I'll probably put together a collage of sorts so we can look back on the year and what we've read. Once we've finished with all of that I'll make another strawpoll with results being released on the next 1st Wednesday.

Nice. I'll check it out.

I think I've found a working site for those of us that need DDL. It's slow, but I haven't had any issue with the one VN I've tested from it, and it seems to have a decent selection. I wouldn't know. https://erogedownload.com/
They suggest a particular program to deal with mds/mdf files, but I'd look for an alternative.
If that's a bad site, let me know, but it seems fine to me.
I'll still post a nyaa link as well, even if /t/ has it covered.

I'll post the poll in a bit, now that I've found a source for all of my selections. I'm going to allow new answers, if none of the VNs are of any interest.

I agree that we should try to steer clear of long-running series. I think variety will be an important factor in our pool of choices. It'll give us something fresh to talk about consistently and anons disinterested in the selection can always check in next meet instead of avoiding us because we're bogged down in a series.
