Of course, grinding the same file or "dan" over and over will, best case, give very lopsided improvement, the scoring system is already a massive bias on any rhythm game, don't need even more artificial barriers to what should be played.
Playing to ladder is just an even more specific case of the above.
How many mania players would, ds and vibro and manip if they sightread every song? My guess is a lot less.
And how are you supposed to improve wrist jacking if you only vibro? You can't.
Simply put, if you always rely on cheese in every game to fulfil your goal you will only ever improve in fulfilling your goal with cheese. Anything that isn't cheeseable is forever locked off from being even a goal you can hope to achieve.
Luckily, most content is cheeseable.

Does anyone play DDR with boost arrows on?

I'm finding that I tend to step on arrows when they appear in the middle of the screen instead of hitting the top, but I also have boomer reflexes and I have a hard time reading charts at speeds above 2.5 or 3x. Wondering if boost will give me the ability to hit steps more accurately or if I should just get better at playing at higher scrolls speeds.

I've only been playing for about 2-3 months. I can clear 12s blind pretty consistently, but I'm having trouble with most 13s, and 14s are completely out of my grasp atm. 12s that are crossover heavy are also murdering me atm.

The only times I've ever used Boost is on deltaMAX and Max.(period)

>> No.39335073

I've never tried playing with sudden+, I'll need to give it a shot. First try cleared Legend of Max 13 today, which was pretty neat, but the slowdown section was extreeeeeeeemely sloppy.

>> No.39335127

>>39335073
S+ isn't really that viable for LoM because there's no break between the transition from the slowdown to the last 333 section. The option really shines with charts that have what I'm going to call "toggle spots" where there is a decent break between the BPM transitions where you can toggle the option on/off. Examples of good songs to use Sudden+ on would be:

>Over the Period (have on for the start, toggle off during the long freeze arrow after the 160BPM section)
>IX (toggle off on the freeze arrow right before the first speedup)
>Roppongi D (have off at the start, then toggle on during the jump freeze after the 340 speedup)
>Happy Lucky Yeappy (have on at the start, toggle off during a gap in arrows a bit before the speedup)
>New York Evolved A (have on at the start, there's a spot before the final speedup that gives you time to toggle it off)
>最小三倍完全数 (also known as Triperfect, it's the DJ TECHNORCH that's ESP 17. Have on for pretty much the entire song, then toggle it off on the final freeze right before the 440 ending)

Sudden+ really does help read the arrows better at slow read speeds. However, it does require chart knowledge and planning when to toggle the option on or off. It's a lot easier to parse patterns when there's a lot less bullshit to read at once.

It can fuck you over on a lot of charts. That's why when I'm learning a chart, I'll stick to 2x-2.5x max until I get the gist of it, then bump it up to my normal read levels.

>>39364550
Oh, whoops. My bad, I should have mentioned that I am not the original anon here: >>39334443

The whole point of >>39363903 is this. I usually read at a speed of 600-620 BPM when I know charts very well, because I don't need to be able to see ahead to know how to properly execute a pattern.

On charts that I don't know, I'll bump it down to 450-500 so I can actually read more of the chart ahead of time. That way I can properly prepare myself for the upcoming pattern.

To add to this, it really bugs me when I see new players (or players who otherwise haven't learned fundamentals yet) using ridiculously high speed mods, then absolutely beef it during slowdowns. I believe everyone should take some time playing stuff on 1x so they can improve their slow-reading abilities. Seriously, it's kinda ridiculous how many players I know can't read slowdowns because they're trapped in 650-700BPM reading hell.

Original >>39334443 anon here,
My timing tends to differ day by day. Some days I’m really on point and I’m hitting arrows as they’re needed, some days I’m hitting arrows at the middle of the screen and I’m completely off beat. I’m still fairly new to ddr (kinda, I played a lot of extreme in the 2000s but mostly played on light with a bit of standard thrown in.) I’ve been playing for about 3 months now and I’m clearing 12s fairly easily while struggling on 13s. My biggest weakness right now is absolutely crossovers. I’m doublestepping them consistently, and I still haven’t cleared crossover heavy charts like sunkiss drop and afronova. That’s where I’m focusing the majority of my practice on currently, and I’ve hit a bit of a wall.

I’m playing most songs at a 2.5x mod, which usually puts me at 400-450 bpm.

I’ve also been trying legend of max expert because it’s a genuinely enjoyable chart, though the frequent l transition from single steps to jumps tires me out super quick, and I’m not even able to land them consistently. It’s where my combo breaks.

>> No.39377740

>>39376032
Are you having trouble with the movement of the crossover itself, or are you just having trouble knowing when they are coming?
If you want easier songs to practice, you can try Abyss. There is a section right at the end that has crossovers on quarter notes and then transitions to 8th notes. Very easy song, it won't tire you out, but its not a boring one while still getting your body to make the crossover movement.

Guys I need help. Before I joined the military around early 2017 there was a website with a real slick UI that was comprised of album art square full screen cover with the ability to search for any album be it by name, artist, tag etc by simply typing at any time without having to click. Also, when you clicked on the album you would get DDL links. I'm going to tell you right now. Learn how to crossover. Stop cheating by double stepping.

I'm not saying that double stepping isn't a totally valid strategy, but if you get complacent with double stepping and don't learn how to crossover, it's absolutely going to fuck you over once you start breaking into 14's and beyond.

Like that anon said, Abyss is a good one to practice. You can also try air (by DJ Simon, it's in the Extreme folder, very slow and simple crossover patterns). I'm sure there are plenty of others, but I don't really dip into anything below 14s so I can't think of any off the top of my head.

>> No.39379091

Little bit of both? I have really shitty memory, so it's really hard to memorize charts. I memorize patterns and try to attack them appropriately. Most times I wont even recognize a crossover until I'm midway through doublestepping it.

The only exception to the rule is sunkiss drop because it's entirely crossovers from start to finish, but I cant seem to close out the ending where you're swapping which direction you're crossing over in. The last 30 seconds or so when the song shifts into a higher key

I honestly wouldn't mind premium time/step up mode in either DDR or Gitadora seeing how Paseli is fairly useless on both (unless you do the one-time Gitadora Deluxe Mode unlock grind which is just a massive Paseli dump of credits of just mindlessly playing through every locked song once).

Using too much force tapping or wristjacking. You only need 60 grams max to actuate keys normally. The two most common force related problems are tensing and just hitting the keyboard too hard. If you are tensing (more common when wristjacking, but happens with normal taps too) you are using say 3N up and 4N down, so it may sound like you are tapping light, but you are using way too much force on your hands. If you aren't tense, just tap the keyboard lighter.
Obviously don't vibro or mash either.

The term you're looking for is double stepping, and it's a perfectly fine thing to do on most charts up to 13. Once you get into 14s and beyond, your lack of crossover skills is going to fuck you over if you ever decide to try to get good at the game.

>> No.39460776

>>39460687
>Once you get into 14s and beyond, your lack of crossover skills is going to fuck you over if you ever decide to try to get good at the game.
Why do people say that above a certain speed people stop doing crossovers and start doublestepping? Just trying to understand, please be patient.

>> No.39460885

>>39460776
Actually, I think it's the opposite. Once a crossover reaches a high enough speed, it starts to become non-viable to double step it. Think about a long, Can't Stop Falling In Love Speedy Mix style crossover run, only 16ths at 180BPM or something. The only real way to hit that is to do the crossovers.

Here's a practical example at only 150BPM.

https://youtu.be/WiIIKqzFmbY?t=23

You wouldn't want to double step that crossover run at Combo 106, especially if you're playing for score.

I don't think that's the best song to go for if you're just starting to learn crossovers my dude. Especially if you're not experienced with higher level charts.

You should look for some easier low level charts with plenty of crossovers so you can work on your form. Air ESP comes to mind, as well as Can't Stop Falling In Love Speedy Mix ESP, Sephirot ESP, Higher (next morning mix) CSP, there's a bunch more I'm sure but it's hard to think of them off the top of my head.

Depends of what you consider hard or what you think a "good player" can do. I don't have much of a frame of reference and examples to give you of my current level is tricky, finding anything on YouTube is getting harder and harder as the algorithms start pushing MrBeast and pewdipie 10000000x over what I'm looking for even with exact search terms in quotation marks. Here's one, similar score to this guy too, I think my pb is 83%? Haven't tried that song in a bit, its quite challenging.

after seeing iidx next to a bunch of shiny newer rhythm games i think i get why people don't play it even though it has insane depth. ppl are retarded bugs attracted to lights. I don't think Lightning Cabs are going to attract many more new players into the fold. I guess that's ok though, I will love mashing the 7keys and turntable until they put it down for good.

>> No.39461216

Double-stepping is perfectly fine past 13s if you're comfortable with it. Its not like you rigidly have to never double-step or never do a crossover. When I was active in the game I PFC'd the saber wing headshot remix and I double step parts of the ending all the time.

>> No.39461578

>>39461030
Or maybe because it's an old game that's relatively unintuitive, makes you question why its main gimmick is scratching if it results in arbitrary sounds, and is now mostly played by people who have burned the whole thing into their muscle memory over years of practice.
Also the random meta which makes it so there are fewer static patterns all other rhythm games have, and you're just expected to try to suck less until you semi-sightread everything.

I'm not saying it's bad, but the lack of flashing lights is not necessarily the main reason new players might avoid it. Besides, it's still popular enough to keep going for years, so who cares?

>> No.39461924

>>39461028
Ah, never mind then. In that case, Oversoul would probably be a good one to play. If you're feeling adventurous, try Astrogazer as well. It has two 8ish measure long streams with tons of crossovers thrown in. You might find those very rewarding to learn. Maybe give it some plays in Stepmania with a rate mod (if you don't have a pad, play STRICTLY index so you can learn where the crossovers are). The greens section has lots of crossovers too, but some of them aren't worth doing since there's a few 180's and even 270's in there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mThNipZDNcQ

I still personally think it would be better to learn crossover form on lower level stuff, but I also know just how boring that kinda thing can be.

Just to be clear: I don't mean to completely discount double stepping. I do it all the time. I double step the ending of BLSTR ESP and can still PFC it.
