Without some drastic change in storytelling this manga is doomed
By far the biggest issues from the very beggining have been the complete lack of detective work and the fact that Satori is a non character in her own manga. It was a mistake to start off with such a case, as it quickly devolved into a sightseeing tour. Really there shouldve been a few cases in old hell and other parts of gensoukyou to help establish Satori as a detective. That would also help with world building and would give Zun some good practice in the genre.
Instead we got this, a sightseeing tour/chase. The only mysteries have been, who is it, who is possesed, why is the spirit doing it and how will they catch it. The issue here is that Satori knows who it is and as of the last chapter so does the audience, cant figure out who is possesed in time and the true reason for the spirit's actions will probably be revealed in a scooby doo way. So that only leaves us with how they will catch it.
For a while most people became convinced that the spirit would be Mima, and personally I only stuck around for that, but now that isnt happening and with the way Mizuchi's reveal was handled it just seems that Zun wants to race to the end of this story.
Who knows, maybe he will subvert my expectations and establish a proper mystery story in the following chapters, he is a huge fan of Agatha Christie and it wasnt uncommon for there to be false resolutions in her stories that then required the detective to investigate every nook and crany to find even the tiniest lead and get to the real bottom of the mystery, but considering how sloppy CDS has been so far I doubt it

the problem so much isn't that ZUN revealed mizuchi when he did, it's that he did the big reveal of the evil spirit...and then had it go back to doing exactly what it was doing before it was revealed? what was the point? the big reveal is supposed to shift the paradigm and change things up. Instead, it's revealed, then possesses mokou and just fucks off before ditching her too.
I'd bet that ZUN will play it up as either sanae or kanako getting possessed in the next few chapters (seems we're skipping PoFV as well, so I'm not sure what the deal is anymore), only for it to be suwako

And i honestly don't see how ZUN can come out with satisfactory ending for that. Chances are that it will either end up with Mizuchi anger being misguided and return to status quo, or another luke-warm reveal that won't make for satisfying ending.

Is it me or have the past few official works been way darker than the rest of the series? Particularly the earlier games where the incidents ranged from largely harmless - a vampire wanting to go outside in the day, to completely pointless - like a bored celestial killing time.

In 17 we got the beast mob who ruthlessly exploit human souls, in 17.5 an invincible goat devours a load of damned souls in hell for power and starts to go insane (and then gets straight up murdered by Flan, who was a hired assassin). and now we have a ghost who apparently holds extreme disgust and hate for youkai with a burning passion and actively tries to legitimately fuck them up outside of spellcard fights.

There was always stuff like fortune teller and Oni Kasen's skulls, but the former just didn't want to be a human, and the latter case are people she killed ages ago. I wonder if ZUN is trying to change things up a bit with more serious plotlines.

Remember that Reimu burned all of Fortune Teller's notes so that he wouldn't revive from Kosuzu's actions again. Just killing youkai doesn't really matter, they have to be sealed or something. Remilia started something worse than hypothetically killing humans that was described as a rampage the other youkai had to stop her from committing. This mist incident is nothing compared to that. Also one of the endings has Reimu forcing her into the sunlight for a while. Reimu just lacks the effort to finish the job, but even in the last Lotus Eaters, Reimu was about to kill Suika for showing up uninvited at her party. If anything Reimu does act too violently as earlier works describe incidents and exterminations as being mock battles solely for preserving the existence of the youkai by preventing them from either losing their purpose in life or being killed by other youkai/humans. As the youkai aren't supposed to actually eat the humans in Gensokyo, Reimu isn't supposed to actually completely erase the youkai from existence.

Regarding Yuyuko, it's stated that it's impossible for her to succeed anyway as it would be suicide (reviving the tree would involve reviving herself which would kill the ghost self and stop the process)

Satori is not in Gensokyo or under its rule, technically neither is Yuyuko, but Satori is specifically part of a group of separatist youkai and like Yuyuko, the manager of one of the afterlife realms. The surface world isn't her concern and the youkai of Gensokyo aren't supposed to interfere, nor is it Reimu's job to deal with underground youkai. As for Kanako/Suwako, they have the support of both the mountain youkai and the underground youkai and could have just handled the situation themselves anyway.

Except that it took some time to take effect, Junko's attack wasn't something that happened from one day to another, it took 6 months for her power to take effect. The following text comes from Junko's LoLK profile:

Were losing. The game was caused by moon rabbits contacting Reisen saying they needed her to fight in a war in which the humans had the upper hand and that they were coming to get her.
