So I recently found out what Touhou was and all I can think is "How come no one told me about this before?" Cirno is my favorite. <3

So how did you get introduced to Touhou?

It's funny, I knew about touhou way before /a/ had touhou hijacks, as I was involved with a fansub group that managed to get other staffers to play the games. The games were fun, but I'm not that huge of a fan of the genre to keep playing them for too long. I do like that touhou has managed to create such a rich fandom/community for it in Japan, and I still enjoy what they manage to produce.

I personally ran into Touhou about a year ago...

I was sitting at my computer bored one day, when I got the idea that I would try to find some sort of extremely hard and challenging game. After randomly lurking around the internet, I came across the danmaku shooter 'sub-genre'. The first shooter that I downloaded and played was a demo for a very obscure game called Visionary Wings, and I thought it was alright.

But Then, I discovered Touhou.

I downloaded a demo version of Perfect Cherry Blossom (because that was all I could find at the time) and played it. Loved that shit. The music was great, the characters were nice, and the gameplay contained a lot of creative and fun game mechanics.

[[Of course, at the time, I always had a habit of going to the Settings menu before actually starting games. I found the Player option, and found it set to 3. I immediately started to think, "Well, I'm not player 3, I'm player 1. I'd better change this." This made it very difficult to get to Alice (last boss in demo) without continuing on Normal (I hate playing games on Easy in general)...]]

As I became more familiar with Touhou and the thriving fan culture surrounding it, I began showing it to my friends. Some caught on to Touhou, others didn't. But now, I've got a bunch of friends at school who know Touhou (although, most of them are in it for the fandom more than the games) and talk about it quite a lot. I've even taught myself to play TH music on the piano and trumpet. I don't know what it is about Touhou, but there's no doubt in my mind that ZUN has truly done something wonderful.

When I used to frequent iichan's adult boards back in 2006, I once went to the Touhou board. Since they allowed Rozen Maiden and no one really bother with introductions and what not so I pretty much blew it off as weird jargon for some fetish (Strangely, that's how I would describe it today probably.). Then, I came to /jp/ around when the theme song was made, since I was older and more of a pathetic loser, I finally was able to unlock the secrets of the Touhou.

But seriously, I still don't get parts of the fandom...

I found a picture of Hong Meiling covered in food. Years ago. Probably around 2003/2004.
I had no idea what it was, and I thought it was just a standalone image, but it was relevant to my interests.

Soon, more and more junk kept surfacing. Art here. Cheesy flash animations here. Music there. I even played a demo for Perfect Cherry Blossom, thinking it was not part of a series.

But then, slowly, everything started to fit together about two years ago.
... nothing has ever been the same.

It's really hard to pinpoint my first exposure, because it's very difficult to remember when I first put it all together. It had equal things to do with Flandre's theme, the Apollo 13 flash game, and most definitely Yuyuko.

I was searching for good yet lightweigh games to play on college's computers and i fond about the PC-98 games. I played them and since they aren't translated, I didn't grasp any of the story/characters and I just enjoyed the danmaku. Later, I found desuchan's touhou board and I saw a picture of Reimu showing her armpit. I though she looked different then from the PC-98 game and discovered the windows games. I'v played them and found out about the secondary stuff and got into it too. A couple of days later, I had all I could find about Touhou: music, doujins, futanari, games, fan games, flash, ect. Then at a local anime convention, I had the chance to buy an actual copy of Shoot the Bullet and some doujins. I still play the games at least once a week but I'm not that good. I can manage the spellcards but the stages themselves get me.

So a while back I downloaded all of the Touhou shooter games, atleast 7-12. And I like them, they're fun, but how does one go about "getting into" Touhou? I try to follow the story on the arcade-style games, and it just seems generic.

Now please, please spare me the hate of harshing on the game, I really don't mean it. Am I just missing something? Could someone point me in the right direction here?

I knew about touhou, but I always thought it was fucking stupid.

I mean, the girls have the most absurd outfits. Of course there was always high quality fanart associated with them, but it really wasn't something I could like from the art alone.

Then someone commented about touhou on a column I wrote with a gameplay vid of UFO. It was really amazing, so I thought I'd download the games and give them a shot, and I found them really great.

Now, it's not like the games are very comprehensible or have anything close to a good story, but they but the characters in context and let me finally enjoy the fanwank, which is pretty entertaining too.

I have no fucking clue why this pic was in my touhou folder.
