Nearly every kanji so far has a completely different reading/pronunciation when putting another kanji or hiragana character next to it.
I am baffled at how anyone is supposed to memorize, much less retain 2000+ of these symbols with seemingly random pronunciations.

I prefer Voiceroid, GYARI sold me on these characters way too hard, especially Kiritan and Akane. Voicevox sounds great and it's also free (and open-source), but it's still extremely new (only came out last year), so not a lot of people are using it, and when they do, it's usually Zundamon (she's very flexible in her performances). Yukkuris are amazingly popular in this genre. Very ubiquitous, due to how versatile they are, and easy to use (it's a basic speech synthesizer with no additional settings, AquesTalk). Characters themselves don't have any personality, so whoever's writing them has a lot of freedom. I'd imagine a lot of people do want to get to a level where they can write essays. That said, I don't see what the act of physically writing kanji has to do with the ability to formulate ideas. So long as you know which word to use and what characters that word is made of, the actual strokes shouldn't matter. Thinking in terms of kanji doesn't necessitate the recall of the full glyph and the strokes. Remembering a character's meaning spectrum is different from remembering how to reproduce its glyph on paper.
