i actually uninstalled discord a while ago just to get away from it for a while
my initial post was slightly dishonest, i'm not forced to interact with them but the brainrot i get from being subjected the worst the western touhou "fandom" can throw at me is too much for me sometimes

While they are a big part of the problem, I'd argue that consolidation of the internet ruined it more than anything.
Think back to even just ten years ago and you had a lot more options to discuss any given niche with others online, whether it be through fan sites, forums, and non 4chan imageboards.

Now back to present time; nothing remains but the same handful of corporate social media sites/apps that everyone gets corralled into. Aside from shit like Discord, Twitter, Reddit etc little else remains. Every fandom/interest/subculture has been centralized by at least one of these.

Some places from older times may still be around, but they're either graveyards that a few people may visit once in a blue moon to reminisce or highly insulated groups that keep to themselves, with slow activity.

Outside of 4chan (and even here to some extent), the gatekeeping that kept undesirables is no longer possible. Thanks to standardized rules across social media platforms that coddle normalfag feelings, you're forced to either tolerate them shitting up discourse with low effort/irrelevant garbage or get kicked out for telling them to fuck off.
