Guide: https://learnjapanese.moe/

be sure to read John's religion/story
>How I got 180/180 on N1 in ~8.5 Months!
https://rentry.org/9pe4o

But essentially what John's method religion IS:

* Start reading every day (and listening)
* Go through a grammar guide (like Tae kim or Cure Dolly)
* Go through a common vocab deck (like core2.3k)
* Mine stuff into Anki that you encounter in your Japanese media

A detailed guide of what John did can be found on
https://pastebin.com/0ANbbfHR

*John Bless your gains

Disregard bad advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・any геddiт """guides""". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, coin miner, confusing for beginners.
・tatsumoto. It recommends targeted sentence cards, which are proven to be less effective than words cards(animecards).
・Ankidrone Starter Pack. It is based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Core 2.3k instead.
・Tatsumoto. Tatsumoto is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
He isn't an honest person. He is a hypocrite who promotes the exact opposite of what he does.
・Matrix/Telegram. Matrix is malware that runs a data mining operation. DJT has moved to Signal.
・Refold, Migaku and other for-profit companies who want to scam you.
・Namefags, don't waste your time with Attention Whores
・Download 4chan X to filter Namefags

TheMoeWay is the best resource.
be sure to read John's religion/story.

Is there a place where I can quiz myself on inflections like what jisho shows for verbs? Would be great if there's adjectives and suffixes (stuff like でしょう, たい, etc.) too.

2) He's Russian.
3) He created a fake "djt" cringecord server where he made numerous racist and trans-phobic comments. He's a racist and a white supremacist.
4) His "server" has nothing to do with the DJT Matrix space.
5) He hosts his site on Github (owned by Micro$oft).

He isn't an honest person. He is a hypocrite who promotes the exact opposite of what he does.

Disregard SHIT advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・tmw/The moe way. Patreon scam run by a turkish tranny.
・any rentry.org and геddiт """guides""". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, confusing for beginners.
・Anime cards (the guide by someone named QM). It recommends words cards, which are proven to be less effective than targeted sentence cards (TSCs).
・Core 2.3k. It is based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Ankidrone Starter Pack instead.
・Anacreon. Anacreon is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
・Discord servers. Discord is malware that runs a data mining operation. DJT has moved to Matrix.
・Refold, Migaku and other money grab schemes.
・Visual novels. People say they're trash because of unnatural speech and useless vocabulary. Most VNs are proprietary ー https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/

tatsumoto is the best guide.

Love falls apart under scrutiny. You realize it makes no sense and it dissolves.

That's why I'm thinking the Japanese tendency to avoid analysis is pretty based. And you need to avoid analysis at least until your feelings have settled to avoid changing them in the process, which is why "real-time analysis" is doubly gay.

From now on I'm going to face things head on, no more running. I'm going to start my journey again. I'm going back the beginning, I will learn hiragana again, Then I'll start kanji and katakana. There's no more running, I'm facing it head on. There's no more trying, just doing.

What led to this realization? Yesterday I read a kanji. I read 私. I was just able to read it somehow. I felt a sense of pride and realized "I can do this". I never felt like I was getting anywhere. But after reading that kanji, I knew I was going to get it. And I realized what I'd done. And now I've gotten up.

You haven't failed. Japanese isn't hard. It's the change that is. It's only hard for you because it's new. Don't give up, get back up. You can do this. You will succeed! Good luck everyone! You hard work will payoff. Have faith in yourself, and get back up.

I'm up to a N3 level of reading and writing. I actually may be up to an N2 but I haven't had a chance to get any tests done because I am lazy and had other things on my plate.

What's the market like for translating doujin and VNs? Do translators usually do their own editing? I don't even know where to begin with this kind of stuff. I'm pretty sure i could easily translate stuff timely but I don't know what the work generally entails and if I'm better off making a fiverr account or joining a group or something.

that's pretty normal yeah, that's why most people translating manga are pretty bad because they're just doing it for japanese practice alongside deepl. people who made it further usually don't bother and quit the scene. it's more english writing than japanese reading ability that matters

I'm glad to know I am not the only person who has that problem. I find it so hard when one of my friends asks me to translate shit for them. I've had native speakers on both sides of things ask me to translate after they just heard me speaking fluently to someone else in either language and then look at me like I'm a retard when I say "lemme think". >>38886611
quote the japanese dictionary definition of なる that you consider to be "is", because to me i think you are just misunderstanding every situation like above
なっている can mean "is" in the same way that 死んでいる means "is dead", because it's referring to a state of being
but either way it's not really hard to see why なる could mean "is" because something that has "become" something now "is" that thing,

what was their definition of ナンバーワン prior to becoming オンリーワン and when did/will that change occur
its more logical to think of it as "in this context the meaning is this contrasted with the meaning you would expect elsewhere"

>> No.38886743

you're the one who is playing gymnastics with english if you think that is relevant. なる doesnt require all those stipulations
>それまでとは違う物・違う状態に変わる。
thats the definition in the dictionary. it clearly applies here because their definition changes from the original to the one that they give it
the problem you seem to be having is that these sentences can be translated to "is" in english with no issue, and it would obviously be more natural to say "our definition is x" rather than it "becomes x", but the japanese meaning is simply "becomes"

that doesn't mean that it means "is" in japanese though, it's just the best way of expressing the actual japanese fundamental meaning* in english is "become"
the problem is you just perceive it to mean that in a lot of situations because you don't really understand why なる is being used the way it is, and the only interpretation that makes sense to you is "is" like in the 2 sentences you quoted, one without even really understanding it (which is why you left off half of it even though it gave the phrase its full meaning)

I've just finished Book 1 and started book 2. Big yay from me, I'd recommend it. I see it as an alternative to Tae Kim's grammar guide (or whatever else you're using for grammar). The book series won't make you fluent in anyway but gives you a good foundation in the language in an easy to follow and progressive manner. You can then follow it up after a lesson with the corresponding Youtube video to re-inforce what you've learned. I like George's style of teaching and personality. Much more enjoyable to watch than Cure Dolly that's for sure.

Of course, don't rely on just the book. Use a core Anki deck and immersion on top too as well as anything else u might want to supplement your foundation with.

i already agreed that なる in some cases more naturally translates to "is" in english in some cases, because the word become obviously isn't used to the same extent it is in japanese
but there's a reason you have to use a jp-eng dictionary here rather than quoting a japanese-japanese definition, and the reason is that you are trying to conform japanese to your english thought patterns about how なる is used vs what japanese people mean when they use it

>その意味では「です」をもっと丁寧にした表現の「(~で)ございます」を用いて「こちらが資料でございます」「ランチでございます」のほうが、違和感をもたれることもなく、自然な表現といえます。
