Otaku culture has been dead for ages. It died a double death when retarded kids on tiktok/tumblr etc co-opted it.

You're three years late to realize that, and about 7 late to acknowledge that the top had arrived. 13-14 late to realize that things wouldn't be the same.

13-14 is a bit off.

it's been redefined into something else, nowadays feels more like mindless consumerism from whatever corpo comes out instead of people celebrating their love for a specific interest and creating things or sharing knowledge
before there was the consumerist aspect too of course, it's just amplified to such a degree it's almost dangerous

Now that it has wide appeal and with fans with different degrees of engagement or interests, it isn't as solid as before. You now have to deal with adults that really liked a couple of series 20+ years ago as children or teens and have unrealistic standards for modern stuff, complaining that series that are completely different from the thing they liked before isn't the same. You have the modern passive viewer that only watches shounen and makes up the bulk of the majority. Kinda harmless but, wanting pretty much the same, doesn't let for discussion or to show them different styles or genres because it's "weird". You have the young audience that has grown with very different values, and they want to feel completely identified by a character of series based on their beliefs and leaning, so they can be passionate and obnoxious, and rarely steps out if the comfort zone.
Some people I coincide with, are growing older and have other responsibilities or start having another hobby, so they phase out of the media for the most part.
