Densha Otoko was good but I started losing sympathy with the main character after the first few episodes. It's like, you've got such a good opportunity, you've got your foot in the door, stop being such a faggot and carry through with it.

Nodame is a ridiculous fluke. All other Japanese dramas are varying degrees of shitty.

The quality (lack thereof) of most J-drama isn't surprising when you know how the entertainment industry works here. Basically, TV and Music are run by committees of old men who cross-collateralise cross-promote and cross-sponsor everything with the result that any kind of creative spark or quality gets hammered out pretty early in the process, and the "talents" involved are whichever pretty faces are being used for the tie-in pachinko games/pop-songs/car commercials that market research suggest will be easily bankable etc etc etc. Japanese indies theatre and movies tend to be much much much better.
