That's because the text is just stored as a reference to the plain text data in the translations text files; it's a lot easier to code for two different languages simultaniously that way.

Whole game folder doesn't have a single file with "I killed it" in it. That includes files that store translated text in them. Data files are encrypted (most probably with some trivial xor with known plaintext), which means that save data is most likely encrypted as well.

First up, what do you have that's causing so much tax? If you invested in high-level shopkeepers in your house, then tough luck. Shopkeeper levels add to tax. Try to maximize your house value to give you more salary, the gashapon machines in Palmia add a shitton of points.

By being fast. If you're not a fairy, get a decent horse and ride it around. Get travel speed boots (seven leagues or dal-i-thalion) if you do escort/delievery quests. Though, travel speed helps nowhere near as much as speed; my 230 speed fairy took about 10 hours of playtime to pass a year.

Alternatively, be kickass enough to kill guards and reserve incognito books (which might be more expensive than taxes unless your bill is 100k+) to be able to buy stuff from non-derphy npcs.

Get performer. Play by yourself until it's level 5 or so. Go to derphy, buy as many level 1 little girls as your charisma can take (cha gear helps here), stock up on 40 cargos of food, then go home and play until your skill is 20-30 or so. You might want to use platinum/skillpoints to keep its potential at 75%+ unless you want it to take ages.

Then, do party time quests. A very important factor here is speed, have a glass gear set, and make sure you're not burdened. Telerod yourself (or walk, but that wastes time) until you find a section with peasants/miners/beggars, and make sure no high level npcs are prowling around (namely LOYTER); if they are you can telerod them away if the spot is otherwise really good.

Party time quests will increase your skill alot faster; keep in mind that your skill doesn't get an increase if you are interrupted by a stone though. Once you have 50+ performer, you can get around 15k/quest, depending on your speed and how lucky you were with npc area placement.

Magic always helps, you should never run around at full mana. If nothing else, spam hero and holy shield, at high levels they're awesome buffs (40ish def for a level 50 shield spell). Regeneration is harder to read and cast, but it's an awesome spell.

You might want to look into the big daddy quest, eating a little girl permanently increases your hp/mp multipliers by about 0.5% for a 100/100 class. Or you can do the actual quest, every 1, 2, 3, 4, etc little girls saved, you get an artifact replica, which basically translates to hero cheese/magic fruit for 3% hp or mp (don't try to clone artefacts, they'll just spawn a random godly). Also the magic gene/cell/body/etc feat. In my experience you need around 150 mana modifier to not run out too much, assuming decent magic.

I remember using cheat engine with this so people who say it doesn't work would be wrong. I didn't really like it in terms of roguelikes though. The help was so unhelpful in terms of finding what keys do what and for me, there was a button input lag that just made me ragequit before too long. I didn't even bother looking for a solution.

Are you trying to use magic on everything? Don't.
Save your spells for tougher monsters. Get a heavy armored pet to take point and hang back with a bow, gun, grenade, or whatever.

Magic is much more useful after you gain some levels, since you'll have a deeper mana reserve to draw on. If you have enough mana then having a few spells miscast isn't a problem.

Join the mages guild ASAP to get a steady supply of spellbooks. Carry a ship load of rods and scrolls.

The two most useful attack spells in the early game are magic dart, and lightning bolt. Magic dart can do good damage, and never misses. Lightning bolt has a high chance of paralizing whomever it hits, and cast hit 5+ people in a line.

Hero and Divine Wisdom are cheap buffs that last a good while.

Only read magic books when can immediately leave your area.

Minor heal stops bleeding and cures poison for almost no mana. Minor teleport is very useful to have when things get shit.

Mages are more involved than other classes, but they really shine in tough situations.

Keep casting over and over. Learn the weaknesses and resistances of things and pay attention to your cast percent. You will be unlikely to cast anything other then short teleport, magic arrow, hero, and healing light until you get some casting levels and having your armor weight at medium and heavy will reduce your ability to cast alot.

Nerve and Mind spells are usually good against most things due to confusion and Magic Arrow does solid damage against every thing.

Coldproof blankets brah. You just need to have them in your inventory (and they need to still have charges). Cold resistance decreases the chance of item break, but it's harder to get, since there's no artefacts that give a shitton of it (like gloves of Vesda which can singlehandedly make you immune to fire item loss). Worshipping Itzpalt increases your elemental resists too.

Is your faith somewhere around level 15-18? If so, when you offer him ores, do you get the 'your god becomes indifferent to your gift' message? If you do, [p]ray; either you get the pet, or you'll just get divine protection as usual. In case of the latter, you'll just have to increase your faith more, try spending some platinum to train its potential (or skillpoints). You get a specific message whenever your faith is high enough to get a new god gift. The first one is pretty low, maybe around 5, and it's a protection spell. After that it's between 15-20, and then one around 30, so look for those messages when you sacrifice gifts!

It was something like "You see a four leaf clover fall from the altar" if I remember correctly (for ehekatl at least)

General stores stock them, albeit not so often. In my experience their level only goes up to the shop's rank; so if you want a level 30 ball, you'll have to invest until the shop's level is 30 or above.
