As for the gameplay, except the protagonist everyone else is voiced so it is possible to play it with /jp/'s limited Japanese knowledge. You might need a dictionary though to translate the choices though.

What did the reviewers on EGS complain about in Umineko?

I have a feeling the lower score is because of a slightly more expanded fanbase and possibly different expectations some of the more "displeased" audience may have had of the game. But I haven't played Higurashi so I can't comment much on the matter.

In my own opinion Higurashi had considerably less relationship stuff. Then again these are just lolopinions and it's pointless to argue over that.

Most of the negative comments talk about things being boring, poor pacing, and just not living up to the expectations left by Higurashi.

The tone of the comments start to change at ep3, which most seem to have found a significant improvement. Ep4 suffers from the long "Ange's past" bit, but overall retains positive reviews.
