faithz is just a retailer
you can watch the official site for the infrequent releases and hope you can get them before they're all gone in 2-3 days
or you can buy at 150%+ from tmdu0410 on YJA
or you can mix & match DD/MDD outfits
sometimes Etsy sellers will list AP compatibility too

Most of the ones posted here are custom Dollfie Dreams (or Mini Dollfie Dreams) from the company Volks, but you might also see Azone Pure Neemos, resin Tinyfox dolls, Obitsu/Parabox dolls (which can be smaller than a Barbie or several feet tall!) and the occasional Smart Doll, if you were looking for specific companies to research. The ones in this photo are Volks dolls, ranging in size from 60cm to 40cm in height.

remember that you can start small and buy Obitsu 24-26cm bodies if you don't feel like spending in a MDD or DD now. I'm new too so I've being weighing out my options, read this guide and it was useful so I will leave it if you want to check it out, there's also Azone and the "pureneemo character series" to check out, though you can't remove the wig or eyes in those.

Well that's encouraging since I'll probably get a little Obitsu first.
Talking about, I've read some people mix Obitsu 40cm bodies with MDD heads, is it common? I've heard Obitsu bodies pose better. Like they go DD head with normal skin tone and get the Obitsu body in white.

It isn't in the OP but there's also this interesting forum for vinyl bjd
>https://www.dolldreaming.com/
Also lately I've learned that the term BJD is usually associated with resin dolls which don't look like the ones posted here and in some communities (like reddit BJD for example) they might even consider vinyl BJD as off-topic

it depends on the individual seller
some will ship internationally, some only want to deal with Japanese addresses but don't care as long as you have one, and I'm sure there are a few that go "ew gaijin" and cancel

We've had at least one poster say their order was cancelled because the seller didn't want to deal with gaijin, so it can happen. Do not recall how many threads ago that was, however, it's been a while.

Yeah, Dollfie Dreams were grandfathered into the "allowed dolls" list on one of the big doll forums by virtue of being made by the company who practically architected the BJD hobby as we know it today, Volks. Other vinyls don't get the same treatment, and to this day some people still consider Resin Dolls and Vinyl Dolls to be separate hobbies. This is also why there are two threads, one in /jp/ and another in /toy/ -- long before I became the thread minder here, there was apparently discourse over whether vinyl dolls counted as BJDs. Things seem much calmer now, and crossboarders are common between the two threads, but most of the anime doll collectors still usually congregate here, and most of the 'realistic' doll collectors wind up over in /toy/. I collect both, so I'm happy to see whatever people want to share, personally. More than anything, I'm just happy to be able to talk about the hobby which I love with others.

It's okay anon, I feel similarly. I think we all share shards of ourselves online, and that's hard -- it's a kind of vulnerability, I think. But it's good to share ourselves a little bit too, even if it's difficult, because connecting with people and pushing out our boundaries is how we grow. Even if it's 'just' sharing doll photos, it's good to connect with the world on our own terms. Do what makes you happy, yeah? That goes for everyone here. The world isn't an easy place to live in, but there's joy to be found in spaces like this. Life's too short not to find at least a little happiness somewhere, and if the real world makes that difficult (for whatever reason there may be for that,) all the more reason to do so online. I think your doll is cute, anon. I'm sure, if I do, then others will, too.

Yes, hello, newfag here. I just learned about the existence of these things from a /bant/ thread yesterday, and was directed here to ask a question.
I'm wondering if it's possible to get custom dolls like this made of girls I've created in Honey Select (an eroge that's basically just a 3D modeling program/diorama-maker where no one ever actually plays the game), and if so, how I would go about that, and what kind of pricetag am I looking at. I have nearly 20 models total I hope to "export" into dolls at this point, but maybe 5–8 that I would prioritize out of those if it turns out to be prohibitively expensive.
I just learned about this yesterday, and don't know any of the nomenclature surrounding this hobby yet, so please answer as though you're talking to a retarded person. Thank you.

>> No.38812566

If you know how to work things properly, you can actually 3D print some dolls, maybe look into that?

>> No.38814798

>>38812399
Price will depend on what size doll base, how much customizing is needed, and how willing you are to try to do some of it yourself. For example, a 24cm blank base doll with unstyled hair and a sheet of custom printed eye decals would probably turn out in the $60-70 range, but you’d have to finish the face, style the hair, and find some clothes for her. Price goes up exponentially with size, and at 44cm you’d be looking at about $500 after the base body and having to get the doll modded and painted by an artist, but you’d have a much easier time finding a variety of premade wigs, eyes, and clothing.

Personally if it was me, for that amount of dolls I’d stick to the 22-26cm range. More cost effective, you could fit them all on a shelf together, and you could get a nice range of heights as well if that’s part of their designs. You can still certainly spend more and get professional painted faces, styled hair, and custom outfits in that range too.

>> No.38816832

>>38812566
Closer to the in-game art style would be preferable, but I've rendered a few of them in other, more anime-ish forms before as well, so I'm open to whatever would work as long as I can look at it and clearly think, "Yep, this is her," without having to suspend disbelief.

>>38812639
I've investigated this before, and it's still on the table. But I have no "brick-and-mortar" art skills, so painting one of the printed dolls and having in not look like shit would probably be a lengthy trial-and-error process. Successfully importing the models to a program compatible with 3D printing also looks daunting, but probably doable.

>>38814798
I was kind of thinking that size would be good too. I was shocked how big these things actually get, they looked pretty tiny in the pics people were posting on /bant/. What exactly would go into finishing the face and styling the hair myself, though?

Obitsu has a decent "realistic" asian head. If you don't know how to paint already then best to find a customizer. Painting on that tiny scale is not easy. Search the Obitsu tag on Instagram and when you find someone you like the look of, see if they do customs. There's one in the pic for you to start off with. They sell on Etsy and Yahoo Japan Auctions. It's not going to be much cheaper than painting the big girls but the body and head will be cheaper. Still probably end up costing $200-400 per girl depending on what the customizer charges.

They'll have rooted hair so the customizer should doing that too. Wigs are a pain in that scale but are doable. Should be about Barbie sized.

For bodies, that's mostly up to your preferences. Obitsu has their own bodies in a variety of sizes or Phicen has silicon bodies if you don't like the look of joints.

If you don't want to fork out that much and don't mind the anime style, Azone Pure Neemos are a good alternative. There are a bunch of premade girls out there you can choose from or a few prerooted blank heads and bodies you can buy and find some water decals for eyes.

That's about the limit of my knowledge on that particular size so maybe someone can chime in with more.

Thanks for the info. The painting style in your pic actually looks pretty close to ideal for what I would want.

Would there be any fundamental differences in what you've explained to me if I ended up going with a larger size? I'm still not 100% sure what size I'll end up going with. Price seems to dictate the smaller ones, but having a 40+ cm doll sounds kind of fun, especially if there wouldn't be any price difference on the custom-work side of the project.

For the bigger girls, there's usually two sizes; around 40cm and around 60cm. Basically roughly 1/4 scale and 1/3 scale. There's also a subset of 40cm that function as child height in 1/3 scale.

Your options are bjd or Dollfie Dreams. Bjd are strung together with elastic and heavier and not the most poseable without practice and manipulation but if you just want your girls to look pretty on your desk they're a good option.

Dollfie Dreams are what most of this thread consists of. They are Volks bjd-sized vinyl dolls with an internal skeleton. They're lighter and more poseable but their soft vinyl is prone to staining. You'd get the same stains on a silicon doll too. They are also mostly anime styled with a few exceptions like 2B or Rise Kujikawa.

Most dolls in this size are meant to be more modular than 1/6 scale. They have removeable wigs and eyes so you can easily change them if you want. But that is an extra cost that the prerooted dolls don't have. The benefit to this is; that you can have multiple looks out of one doll so if you have a few girls that look similar apart from hair and eye color you could technically get all of them in one doll.

The most fundamental difference for me though is the amount of clothing options and disparate sizes. Fashion dolls are mostly in 1/6 scale so there are plenty of options when it comes to clothes. Pullip, Blythe, Barbie and Pure Neemo clothes are relatively common on Etsy and YJA.

Bjd on the other hand are far more indie and come in a huge amount of different body types. This means if you get an unpopular size and you don't know how to sew; you'll have a hard time finding clothes.

Volks is the most common sizing guide for Japanese clothing makers so if you want a girl that is a clotheshorse best to get a body similar to one of their popular sizes.

For your style I would suggest RingDoll. They even have faceups available when you order so no need to find another customizer.
Alice in 44cm
https://www.ringdoll.com/products/alice011-4-scale

and Alice in 59cm.
https://www.ringdoll.com/products/alice01

Unfortunately I am a Volks-whore and can't really speak from experience so you'll have to do your own research on the company and the size. Apparently their wait time from order is about 12 months right now. Standard for bjd companies is about 2-4 months I believe.

Yes, it's a fairly common trick when shooting miniatures to make them look more in scale with surroundings. You put it on a raised pedestal or platform then shift the f stop to have a shallower depth of field blurring the background which is further away than it appears. pic related

If you guys are like me and can't into making your own mushrooms, you can buy them. I bought this big one that Alice is sitting on from plushrooms.com. I originally found the seller on Etsy and they had a link to their store on that site. It was about $34 plus $5 shipping. It's soft and cuddly, and has beads in the bottom of the stem to help it stand upright. But it's not strong enough to support a doll on its own, so I have the stand I got from ACBJD providing additional support.
The small mushrooms I actually found at Hobby Lobby last week. They were $7-12 on the tag price, with a 40% discount as part of "The Spring Shop" or something. Those ones have a hard foam in the tops I believe, and either rocks or pieces of wood in the stem to help them stand upright, so they're not very cuddly like the plushroom. Both stores also had other color options, but I only got the red/white ones. Not that I didn't want the others too, but I didn't want to overspend!

Can be done? Yes. Will it look good? Ehhhhh. They look better on the smaller bodies. If you're looking for an Azone body, Picco Neemo P is a very cute alternative to the Obitsu 11 body. You will need to do something for the neck on any non-Nendoroid body you pick, but I promise it's not as scary as it seems. When you need to trim, go slow. When you need to add, start with something easily removable like polymer clay (not the air dry kind).

Volks does seasonal tan dolls during the summer, but they're in-store exclusive, so you need to either go to Japan or find a personal shopper. It's stupidly hard to find a good recommendation for a shopper, I think because Volks bans them if they're caught for some reason.
Nobody here is going to be mad about customizing a smart doll, and they make getting a tan or black girl much easier.
But don't be shocked if you suddenly can't buy from the store anymore if you post your mod, Danny is fucked up about that for some reason.

So it is possible to make that AP sculpt alluring and actually sexy. That's a nice custom.

I'm torn on whether or not to pick up the frozen girls. I do have the two other Disney/Volks collab dolls but I'm not entirely sold on these, especially Anna but I really feel like I have to get both if I get one of them.

Really? I thought Anna was the better looking of the two. I thought they made Elsa's face too pointy. If you're liquid enough to not miss the money, I say go for it. Worst case scenario and you end up regretting it, you can always easily unload them on the second hand market. There's going to be demand for these.

Happy to report that Pullip Len's clothes fit almost perfectly on my azone boy! Rip the pleather arm/leg covers though, i hate when companies use that material, it barely lasts.

Got my eye mover kits today! The seller also sent a bunch of snacks. I thought my dolls all had 22mm eyes (I know Alice's are 22mm), so I ordered kits for that size, but I think they're 20mm. It still works just fine though. Probably better to have it too big than too small.

I thought installation was going to be really complicated, but it wasn't in the end. You just stick them in there with a bunch of sticky tack and put the eyes in place and the spring things behind them to hold them in place. There's a video on youtube that shows the process for a smaller kit (16mm), which has more parts and involves making various adjustments and cutting them, but I didn't have to do any of that with the 22mm kit. To move the eyes, you just use an included plastic Q-tip thing with a rubbery tip to adjust them from the front. It's very simple.
