That's a lot of genes, because the norm to find functions of genes was mutating them randomly, seeing what you lost and naming the associated genes after the difference. Fruit flies have a tinman gene that gives them no hearts when mutated. Mutated deah gene gives them inverted heads.

It's not that bad. We just have to compartmentalize the known, the unknown, the think-we-know, and pure fantasy so they don't blend together.
