be sure to read John's religion/story
>How I got 180/180 on N1 in ~8.5 Months!
https://rentry.org/9pe4o

But essentially what John's method religion IS:

* Start reading every day (and listening)
* Go through a grammar guide (like Tae kim)
* Go through a common vocab deck (like core2.3k)
* Mine stuff into Anki that you encounter in your Japanese media

A detailed guide of what John did can be found on

i dunno about his writeup, i am doing 45+ new cards a day and my retention inly dipped at first, went from 90 to 80, but its at 86 currently and trending up, despite doing way more stuff, i think our brains adapt to handle the extra load, i don't think im a genius, either

before 45 cards i was doing about 20 on average and being careful to keep my daily reviews to about 200, that didn't matter either, im now doin 400+ reviews a day, and all i really have to do is divide them into multiple sessions

>> No.38615668

>>38615653
yea the limit to new words seems to be pretty high.
but the ratio of anki to immersion is pretty important for long term retention
i will aim for 1/3 at minimum
so if i do anki for an hour ill read for 3

the biggest problem is more cards = more time in anki = more immersion needed

They are better in many situations, for learning expressions and grammar, for words read differently depending on context, and so on. If you have to add a 'hint' to the front of your vocab card (there are no 'hints' when you actually read stuff), you are better off just using a sentence.

But of course sentences take more time, and you are better off using a vocab card if there is nothing to gain from a sentence.

>>38615860
I used similar settings for a while, but eventually a backlog of cards stuck the learning phase developed, which resulted in me spending a bunch of time on cards I just couldn't remember. Also, after a while, the cards' learning intervals became too spaced and my retention dropped.

I really don't get all the shit-flinging revolving around vocab vs sentence cards. People have gotten good using either, or both.
I assume its only because certain posters incessantly shill for one or the other, and retards feel the need to pick a side and fight for whatever they feel is right, possibly stunting their progress by refusing to try something different because one obnoxious person said it was good

It's not that they don't work, but you can do a lot better. Let me borrow a formulation used by the same crowd of people that claim sentence cards work when they talk about people who were 'successful' through traditional study methods:

They learned despite it, not because of it. Most of these people have dedicated large parts of their lives to the pursuit of Japanese language skills, only a small part of which has anything to do with cards and we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking Anki is anything but complementary to the other activities that you engage in with the language. Not to mention that there is no information about how many people failed learning Japanese using sentence cards, look up Survivorship Bias.

Of course you do. Sentence cards are too easy. Reviewing words in a context you are already familiar with is problematic and is not representative of situations where you will have to recall the target word later. Before you have even reached the relevant section of the sentence, you will already have recalled the situation and it will be impossible to fail the card based on 'meaning' because of how strong context memory is. This is doubly true if you put the image on the front of the card.

However you have no guarantee you actually remembered the information you made a card for in the first place. Anime cards fix this by stripping the context from the front of the card and merely using it to remind you of what the word means if you fail it and need to be reminded.

As you do not have to read the entire sentence for every single card you can review anime cards much faster. This means you can invest more time into either doing more cards or consuming more Japanese content.

The conclusion I have reached after reviewing various peoples review data that used both card formats is that review speed is 2 to 4 times as fast. This is extremely important. Most people do not enjoy doing Anki due to the massive time investment it is and the mental drain investing that time is to them. By saving that time they not only gain back time they can invest elsewhere, their motivation to invest it more valuably is also much higher.

>sentence cards are best for understanding japanese sentences
I think this ideas is problematic for several reasons. This was already discussed, but think about how flashcards work: You are recalling information on the back of the cards in response to information on the front of the card. Or in other words: You are not memorizing the sentence.

In that case we have to ask ourselves what 'input' process is supposed to take place during Anki reviews that does not take place during reading and listening. The answer is none and that you are better served doing more of exactly that.

And in the first place, would we take the idea that we need Anki to memorize expressions to the logical end, we would reach the conclusion that we have to make a card for every single word usage and every single collocation. That is not a feasible task and not something anyone has ever done before, so the initial preposition is unlikely to be true

You could say the same about vocab cards as well though, I don't think either one is absolutely 'correct' just that if you stick solely to one or the other you will miss out on scenarios where using another type of card may have been more beneficial. There's such a tiny amount of proper data about these sorts of things that you cant confidently make definitive decisions about what's best for everybody all the time.

Sentence cards simply test too much. Rather than testing you on a minimal piece of information (reading and meaning of one word) you will have to read an entire sentence, decide whether you were able to read every word, understood the sentence as a whole and knew what the parts meant. Do this hundreds of times a day and you will indeed experience 'decision fatigue'.

Anime cards are more simple testing you on far fewer information making the review process and decision making simple. Your brain is equipped with everything it needs to recognize most things out of context and where there might be difficulties we add a hint field

Although most people agree that using Anki is beneficial to learning Japanese, they often disagree on what the best card type is. There are a large amount of options and getting a clear idea can be confusing. Most card types however are either useless or only useful in highly specifics contexts (audio cards, cloze cards, simple word cards without context).

Am I learning too fast for my own good? For some context of myself: Like a lot of people, I have been consuming a lot of Japanese media such as video games, anime, etc. I've been enjoying them for nearly 10 years now (I am 19 right now). I am a native Korean speaker with minimal (maybe like reading 300-400 common characters, I can write less than that) Hanja (kanji) knowledge. It's been around 3-4 weeks since I have started studying Japanese. I started from rock bottom learning how to read the Kanas. Since then I have been exclusively studying grammar and vocab based on N5-N1 levels.

Right now I am able to solve pretty much most of the sample questions in the N4-N5 level (from the JLPT website). And I feel like the grammar at the N3 level isn't too difficult compared to N4 and the recommended knowledge of kanji before the exam is around 600 at N3-N5 level. So I actually do feel like (not coming from arrogance) that I would be able to pass N3 in about 3 months' time if I continue to keep this pace up.

However, I am worried that I might just be cramming and not actually learning the language. I am also worried that I am not getting any speaking practice.

Hey there! I'm an intermediate Japanese learner whose able to hold small conversations now. I don't really like all of the cutesy female pronouns, and watashi is very formal for casual discussions.

Apparently boku is used more often by girls than boys in middle school or highschool settings, according to some surveys I've read? Even though textbooks always tell you its male only.

I'm a pretty tomboyish person, and friends agree, so I feel like boku suits me. It's what I'm most comfortable using. But I'd like to know what other people think of women who use it, I don't know if it's too outlandish or not.

Most of the Japanese women I knew who used boku only used it with their close friends. All of them were lesbians I met in 2-chome(I’m sure non-lesbians use them too, but just sharing my experience), and it was usually a linguistic choice to show that they were ボイ or “masculine-leaning lesbians”. Some also used “ore”, and those tended to be the ones who tried to put on an “alpha” persona. They would revert back to “watashi” during their day-jobs or with people they were not out to.

The only reason tho why I can do almost 100 new cards a day consistently is that a lot of those core deck words and jalup phrases are below my level, so KKLC is really the bulk of the new stuff I study. if it was *all* new stuff, I wouldn't go beyond 30ish new cards a day total.
Collection wide stats in picture.

I'm like 70% of the way thru core 2.3k, it's a bit too easy for me desu I know a lot of it alredy from just having watched too much anime in years past, so I'm basically just re-learning a lot of things.
I'm slowly transitioning to mostly mining, but I'll download the core 6k in the future so that I can still study new cards when I'm too lazy to mine.
KKLC was soooo worth it, I love the pretty intuitive and no-nonsense mnemonics and the order, for me it's totally worth it because learning a new word with a kanji I don't know is just extremely hard for me, while learning a new word built with blocks I alredy know is very intuitive.

Can you shared your deck?

>> No.38623511

>>38623457
It's just the KKLC shared anki deck.
It doesn't have the mnemonics in it, you have to download a pdf of the book to make any meaningful use of it, but it's worth the small hassle IMO. Also the book has some pretty useful chapters about the language and about jukugo words

>>38623461
Ffffuck that, I do take a look at the vocabs but it's mostly to get a more concrete idea of the kanjis meanings and uses, and I only "learn" the reading if it's a "standard" reading I can intuite from the radicals.
I know the actual vocab/readings will just come with time, mostly from mining, I just need to study the building blocks, to make studying everything else easier.

For kklc there's a shitty 80mb version that has really low quality, if you're downloading/using that one, look for the high quality version (340mb or something). Worth it.
