Otaku and nerd are similar but different. Otaku are in japan and have otaku culture which is generaly things like anime VN and manga. Nerds tend to be interested in non japanese things such as Halo warcraft or startrek. nerd and otaku are just people who are more interested in personal hobbies than interpersonal relationships. otaku and nerd are conditions which are found all around the world only with slightly different cultures.

I thought those were geeks?

what is the difference between nerd and geek?

>>386185
nerd = hardcore fan of something
geek = great skills acquired from deep interest of a field
dork = awkward
all three share commonality: socially inept

>> No.386199

My friend in Saitama says that an otaku is someone who has one hobby and follows it obsessively. It doesn't even have to be anime or manga related. He says there are baseball otaku who sit around trying to memorize batting records of entire teams and stuff like that. There are historical figure otakus that memorize every possible biographical detail about one famous dead guy.

Most of them are anime related, but the term does not explicitly refer to those kinds of fans.

sounds about right.

>> No.386339

The difference between an otaku and a nerd is the society around them.

American nerds deal with different societal pressures, and react to them in different ways, than the Japanese otaku deals with and reacts to in his community.

Also, generally, at least recently, "geek" has come to take on a sort of positive connotation. Geeks will proudly call themselves such, and do not mind other geeks calling them "geek" either. Sort of like how Black Americans use the word "nigga."

I should add that the term "otaku" literally means "house" in an honorable sense. So when you refer to someone as "otaku," what you are saying is that he has built this hobby that he pretty much lives his life in, much like a house. You use the honorific "otaku" instead of "ie" to show respect to the person for devoting themselves so fully to one thing.

Even though nobody really respects them except other otaku.

Fuck 'em.

Technically, a nerd is an otaku for science, instead of cartoons.

>> No.386805

Sorry, didn't realize otaku means home.

>> No.386817

Nerds are science junkies. There's not many left. The few that developed in the 80's quickly learned that it was their obsession for science that was causing their social problems. There haven't been many nerds since.

My favorite thing on earth was steam. I loved making mechanical engines that run on steam. I even bought a 2-bit mechanical calculator that I was making into a steam-punk computer. I was having fun figuring it out, but I put it aside in late 2000/early 2001 for some reason, and never picked it back up again.

Now that I think about it, I can't remember why.

It wasn't a fetish. An obsession, yes. I didn't derive sexual pleasure from it though. I was doing something... for.. fun?

no.

An otaku is a subcategory of nerd. There are many kinds of nerds.

AVGN for example.
