Well, when a change is made to the game, further developments going forward are going to be built off that change.
Hydration changed the pacing of stamina management, and the recent changes to stamina naturally follow on from that. Someone who patches hydration out from their game because something something muh piss meme is obviously going to have trouble when the game from that point on is expecting it to be a thing and is designed around it.

I agree with you about the difficulties it creates trying to maintain balance with the feature kept out while Plus is going to continue being balanced around it existing. That won't change the opinions of players that don't like the feature, though, and it also didn't stop CG from going that route. The problem is that hate for the hydration system is a meme that departed from reality a long time ago. They're [T]ools you use from your inventory. As for the damage, it can be respectable if you use the cf potioman type, upgrade it with dual shooting, and feed it enough dyes to get it to +4, so that it can hit as hard as it can once fired.

The thing about potiomen is that once they're loaded up with ammo and maxed enchant value they cost you nothing to fire. They don't need MP or stamina, and reloading them with potions and caps can and should be done out of combat. They also weigh only 0.6 stone each so you can carry a lot of them with you at once.

Potiomen are generally best used as alpha strike weapons to burst down dangerous boss enemies such as Big Daddies (preferably with the help of Fury status) and the main quest nemeses.

I messed around with it some more today and this is my current method to get it working as good as possible, both with plus and oomsest:

>when you extract the game, make sure you use the shift-jis mode in unzip to avoid messed up japanese filenames
>both 32bit and 64bit wine prefixes seem to be fine for elona

>if you get shitty sound crackling (either earrape when you first open the game or the music getting choppy after its been playing for a while) then use winetricks sound=alsa

I had a few prefixes when I was experimenting where the audio was still crackly after all this. I don't know why. But I have both a 32bit and 64bit prefix that are fine now. You might still have some audio delay. Also if you care about playing in japanese then you'll want to install fonts like otf-ipafont and ttf-hanazono to fix alignment issues and you gotta run the game with LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 after the prefix part of the command and before the wine part of the command.

Then today I was screwing around trying to get the MP3 music mods working, because I have a lot of nostalgia for the official one. No dice, but I did find something:

>use winecfg in your prefix, go into libraries and change "dsound" to "builtin"

On a fresh prefix, I could at least use foobar to play the MP3s. But once I installed the winetricks stuff needed to get the game audio itself working, that'd break foobar and it wouldn't be able to play the MP3s anymore. This tweak seems to fix that, though I still can't get the game itself to play the MP3s for some reason. Also, I don't know if it's also thanks to this tweak or just something else I changed without realizing, but after changing dsound to builtin, I no longer had the audio delay on sound effects (ie. menu sounds) that I did before I changed it. It was pretty bad before that, like at least half a second delay.

Anyway, I hope this helps somebody, and if anybody knows how to get the game playing custom MP3s on loonix, then let me know. I'm out of things to try and ready to just assume it doesn't work atm and just listen to music through something else while I play if I'm sick of the midis.

Its up to your preference how fast you want the game to go. 1.16 is the most popular version of Elona in Japan, but it probably takes ten times longer to beat than it takes to get through act 1 in Plus 2.x. Personally I think Plus 1.90 had a pretty good balance given the extra content added by Plus.

The pastebin is pretty out of date, though 1.9 is a solid version if you don't mind the final boss not being implemented yet.
If you want a more recent version in order to be able to beat the game then you probably want to get Custom GX and then use the in-game options to disable recent balance changes like pissing and the exp buffs. 2.10 is the latest but has a new controversial stamina change which fucks up balance unless you have pissing enabled, so some anons are playing on 2.08.

Screwed around with potiomen some more, here are my findings.

- Potiomen are best used to either burst down a boss quickly, which the cf type is best at due to how they work, or to eliminate dangerous mobs before they can do much damage relatively cheaply.

- The only potiomen types worth using are super and cf. The ordinary shots of super do the most damage of all potiomen types, while cf potiomen are for loading to +4 with dyes and alpha striking bosses, preferably with Fury status applied. Use supers for mobs you do not want to screw around with like Xeren Satellite Units, quicklings, bomb rocks, and the like. This works because the dangerous mobs in Elona tend not to be that durable to begin with but have things like jacked Speed and evasion, or teleport away and heal themselves, or toss out status effects and debuffs that make it hard to attack them normally.

- Crush potiomen proc grenade when fired with one round left. Not only does this not scale well lategame due to resistances but you have to waste three shots beforehand if you want the grenade ready. Don't bother.

- Battle potiomen buff your defense when used until your next turn. Sounds nicer than it really is, because trying to tank something like an executioner is the last thing you should be doing.

- You want to upgrade cfs with dual shot, always, so their single attack at +4 hits as hard as it can. Supers you have a bit more leeway in that you have the option for dimming + decap, 10% more damage, or confusion + stamina damage. The latter tends to be the safest since confusion is good at messing with enemy actions, especially spellcasters.

On further testing, the always max damage upgrade will outdamage the 10% bonus upgrade the great majority of the time, so I stand corrected, the max damage upgrade is always the best for super potiomen.

The +80% damage but uses two caps upgrade, however, WILL almost always outdamage the max damage upgrade. Hence you want them to hit as hard as possible to begin with - a cf potioman can have its enhance value go up to +4 instead of +3 like the other potiomen, and cfs giving potions triple value upon charge means they can be enhanced very cheaply. You can give them four dyes to max out their enhance between battles, and yes I do recommend you charge them out of combat since four or five turns to reload a weapon is way too much. Like I said, they're for alpha strikes not sustained fire.

TL;DR - Upgrade supers with max damage and use them for prolonged battles, upgrade cfs with dual shot and always charge them to +4 before firing, use them to do big bursts of damage to bosses. Crushes and battles are inferior, don't use them.
