Mind of Steel Shirou becomes like Kiritsugu before any involvement with the Einzberns and hates himself for the rest of his life.

UBW Shirou realizes that the dream of saving everyone, while being impossible to obtain, is beautiful and pursues it to the best of his ability, only accepting sacrifices when not able to prevent them.

HF Shirou becomes like Kiritsugu just before the 4th Grail War starts, realizing that while the dream of saving everyone is a beautiful dream and still pursues it, if push comes to shove he'll protect the ones he loves before the greater good.

People still missing the whole life-shitting aspect about Kiritsugu's lifestyle still baffles me. I mean, this is right after UBW, a route where the pseudo-antagonist went to fucking hell-on-earth by taking that lifetyle to the extreme without even realizing what the point originally was.

This. Sparks Liner High is sad and ends badly for everyone, but shit, it's got one really fucking badass fight scene and it goes badly through no fault of anyone, things just happened that way because Shirou gave a wrong choice attributed to his mind already slipping way too much. It's a bad end, but it's a really fucking awesome one, like the Shiki-decapitates-Akiha ending. It just happened.

Mind of Steel is just you forgetting the entire previous route and how that kind of no-happiness-for-anyody choices just don't fucking work.
