now that im trying to move onto kanji im learning that a lot of words on jisho have a qualifier of "usually written using kana alone"

so if i were to encounter these words in print media, they would be written just using hira/katakana and there's basically no point in learning kanji? that can't be right because i see so much kanji used in print media but at the same time, again, most words say "usually kana alone"

at your level you're probably looking up words that are almost grammar points more than words. they're usually written in kana yes but the other anon is right that some are commonly written in kanji as well

i do readings, make a card for the kanji, and cards cards with words using the reading, and sentences, most kanji only have 2 readings, a few have quite a lot, but the ones that do, you see a lot, anyway if you learn readinfs you will be able to just read a lot of the words you encounter (but not all, there's many exceptions)

Three years ago, in my early 30s, I decided to start learning Japanese. My motivations were (1) to challenge myself, since I totally failed to absorb Spanish after 4 years of middle/high school study, and (2) for business purposes. I've created products that were surprisingly successful in Japan, which had led to more partnerships there, plus lots of reviews and social media buzz... in Japanese, of course.

The catch is that I'm also extraordinarily busy. I'm lucky to have one hour of actual free time per day when my kids are asleep, and I have to weigh carefully whether I want to pursue hobbies, or just sleep.

So, suffice it to say, things have not been fast! I'm just bordering on N4 level in most areas, though more like N3 in kanji, thanks to wanikani. By and large I'm only able to get in about 2 hours per week at the moment (though before my 2nd kid, that was more like 3 or 4) and I choose to spend most of that in a weekly Zoom lesson with a native speaker who I've known since the start.

It's definitely frustrating at times, because even though I've been chipping away at it, I obviously can't follow full speed native conversations, understand most of what's said in any anime, etc. But, by and large, I'm pleased with where I am. Every week my teacher and I can talk for 30 minutes in Japanese and I can talk about my life, my work, my kids, etc. I can express myself - if clumsily- with some confidence. And in a slower conversation, or with easier reading material, I can understand a lot.

The exciting part is being able to start lifting the fog around the aforementioned social media posts and reviews. Obviously, they often have kanji and vocabulary I don't know, so I read them with jisho.org open in another tab. But... I'll get the gist. It's no longer totally incomprehensible. I can even communicate back in some cases.

Would I like to have 2 hours of peace and quiet every day to study? Yes. But am I happy to have this hobby at all? Also yes. I'm proud of what I've been able to do in the time I have, and I genuinely enjoy it.

So in short... if you're early on, or you're a busy parent with a career, or both: you can do this. If learning Japanese is like ascending a tall mountain, I might only be 50 feet up, but I'm still here and climbing, one step at a time.
