The individuality factor is has about as much to do with Japan's lack of innovation at first as much as whaling is a Japanese tradition.

Honestly the whole science thing isn't that big of a deal. I'm a theoretical computer scientist and after being around the world checking out different companies the US is basically the only country who has a shitload of science right now. Every country may have a bit but MOST discoveries/innovation comes out of the US. Japan is one of the few countries that actually has a pretty good amount of research going on (a significant amount of AI research and robotics to name something I'm familiar with). Japan is actually doing a good bit better than most countries in regard to science. US is still the king though.
