Well I guess if you were a painter you'd have no problem, but this was a real struggle.

Oh another draw thread. There have been some nice works posted in these lately, but activity just seems to slow down a lot during the weekends. Now that its the start of a new week, I'll try to contribute something as well. Also, if people have them saved, it would be nice to see stuff from previous threads reposted as well. Maybe the old requests too, so more people can pick them up.

I don't draw very well, so I make rough sketches, scan them, and trace them over with my mouse.
While I'm no good at either, I'm more familiar with 3D than drawing on paper, so I just make do with what abilities I have.

Mouse is not a drawing device. Get a tablet, a cheap one such as the Bamboo One is fine.

Do people color with a tablet too? I tried using a tablet once, but it was just too hard to get used to, so I went back to using a mouse.

Yes, a tablet helps tremendously in all aspects of drawing, including colouring, regardless of method. Getting used to a tablet takes a bit of time but is very much worth it.

If you want to end up good with a tablet you better practice with one. I'm not denying there's carryover but it's at a similar level to that between pencils and brushes or less, for completely different reasons.

>> No.3831011

>>3830977
People can practice tablets later. People buy tablets for all the wrong reasons half the time. All you need to practice is a PAPER AND PENCIL. Too many beginners starting with a tablet just mash the undo button until they think it looks right.

It isn't specific media techniques that you're carrying over from sketching with traditional media to tablets, what you're carrying over is a solid foundation of the very basics in drawing and sketching.

Besides, it's easier to carry a pad of paper and a pencil around the apartment rather than being bound by a tablet.

>> No.3831109

>>3831011
A tablet is cheaper in even the medium-long run than traditional art supplies. Hell, you can perfectly reasonably spend more money on a computer keyboard than a Wacom brand tablet. Price alone is a good reason to get a tablet - if you're interested in art, hell, even just Messenger handwriting, it's unjustified NOT to spend any money on an appropriate input device.

Much is lost in the process of scanning, if your target audience is online you'll save yourself considerable "but it looked better on paper!" grief by drawing digitally in the first place.

Also, I don't know about you but I sure as hell am bound to the computer anyways, getting off it to draw on paper is a much bigger hassle. Then there's the social aspect to drawing (pchat, oC, oekaki boards, splitting work on drawings between people) that isn't as easily replicated with pencil and paper unless you actually have drawfag friends with similar interests IRL. I know people offline who appreciate a good drawing but not a single one who could name any Touhou character.

Lastly, owning a tablet will not prevent you from using pencils, pens, brushes, crayons, pastels, paints, paper or canvas.

So what are the WRONG reasons?

>So what are the WRONG reasons?
Magic make-art-good button.

While tablets may be cheaper in the long run, traditional media, especially when it comes to simply sketching, is dirt cheap. In addition, tablets often seem to fall under the category of items that pianos and guitars frequently go under; "I don't really use it much". Starting off with basic traditional media is by far cheaper. Tablets kick ass for practicing color, but much of the fundamentals of value can be done in cheap traditional methods as well.

Scanning only turns out bad if you've got a shit scanner, or you've messed up. If it's too hard to see after scanning, it's clear that there isn't enough emphasis on contrast and value in the picture in the first place.

I occasionally feel inspired on my bed. I keep my pencil and paper closer than my computer, so that's just pretty much personal preference. I don't follow the social aspect of drawing, which can explain a whole lot about why I don't think tablets are necessary for learning how to draw.

Likewise, owning pencils, charcoal, etc. will not restrict you from moving upwards when you're ready.

Funny, I would put most if not all of my traditional media stuff in that category - I consider pencils to be primarily writing devices.

I might have an unjustifiably negative outlook on scanners - mine is one of those early USB scanners that is both frustratingly slow and doesn't produce very impressive images. I remain unconvinced, however, because with scanning you are inherently going to run into colour management issues, and with displaying such images on screen, resolution ones. Had you made your art digitally to begin with, you would have adjusted for those.

Used musical instruments can be had for free if you have contacts (I should know, I have 5) because they're sturdy objects that will last for decades or centuries with minimal care - not using them much is hardly an argument against their inherent value, so they don't get disposed of even when not in use.

Tablets, being digital devices, do not have quite such well lasting value - compared to any other computer device, however, I would say they keep their value hilariously well. I'm certainly not in any hurry to replace my 7-year-old Intuos 2 - while that puts it behind my favourite keyboard from 1989 as the longest lived computer device I've had, I image it will have outlived even that by the time it breaks or retires.

In conclusion: if you spend more than 5 minutes per year drawing with a mouse, get a fucking tablet. If you spend more than an hour, get a good one.
