Hell, you could just say that their ship also allows them to hop between dimensions and that they hopped from the PC98 dimension to the Windows dimension. Of all the PC98 characters they're the easiest to work into the current setting.

These old school games are really "old school" in more ways than we think, immediately after proposing Meira, Reimu goes to fight "magic" stones, probably an allegory for the powers of the old world [J E R U S A L E M] trying to stone Reimu after witnessing her outrageous attempts at engaging in homosexual behavior, Meira gives mad dyke vibes.

I enjoy the darker tone in PC98 a lot.
Not like grimsokyo dark but more in terms of the style of the music and the writing direction.
I don't want to go LE SOVL but I think the old games have a certain charm to them in their lack of restraint and jankiness

I've always found the PC-98 games unique, largely due to their experimental nature. ZUN managed to use hardware constraints to create an atmosphere completely different from the later games, with the only one ever coming close being TD.
I also really enjoy the gameplay of LLS and MS. They're simple, but that's what makes them so easy to jump into and revisit.

These elements are what made the PC-98 games immediately resonate with me, just some feeling to the tone of the music and the saturated, high-contrast visuals which I can't explain. I think knowing that most of the elements from these games were later abandoned by the author also adds a certain mysterious vibe to them.

Does someone here know how to edit ".MAG" files or create new ones?
I've found this "ultimate collection" which is a pack with the emulator properly set up and an hdi file which includes all the games and a custom launcher in the same hard drive image.

It has some ugly stuff though:
- The games are only in the unpatched version, which isn't the best choice for a pack made for newcomers (the creator says that's because the patches aren't 100% stable)
- The games come with the extra modes unlocked and the Completed badge on all the shot types (the creator says it's for accessibility reasons)
- The game pictures in the launcher feature MMD art which doesn't really fit the games

The first two are easy to fix with some hdi editing, but for the third one (which is fortunately the last serious) I'll need to edit the image files, which are in MAG format (example https://files.catbox.moe/72ipv2.MAG)) and from what I've seen you need to use an editor inside PC98 Windows to edit them.
I'm looking for some editor you don't need to run on the emulator, hopefully someone knows about it.

It's playable at full speed on 10 using DxWnd. Although, it works a bit too well and some parts with intentional slowdown also run at full speed.
You might also need VirtualMIDISynth and a soundfont since I don't think 10 supports MIDI by default.

Gonna disagree here anon. Yumeko really strikes me as this super strict type perfectionist. Combined with Shinki being commonly portrayed as ditz, she is the only person that keeps things running. I would assume that she is so strict about flawless apperance that she makes sakuya look pathetic.

Yeah, I think I'll make a thread about it so it gets some more visibility and everyone who's been thinking of playing the games but didn't want to bother with getting stuff set up finally gets to give them the chance they deserve.
I've got sidetracked lately but I should have it ready by tomorrow, I think I'll post it here first so people can take a look and report any issues, then make the thread with the final version next weekend.
